[Management of war injuries of blood vessels in prolonged ischemia].

We present a successful management of a gunshot wound of major blood vessels of the leg, in condition of prolonged ischemia. The patient has been sent to our hospital for the complete vascular management of the complete interruption of the major blood vessels of the left leg that were primarily ligated and marked. Because of the difficulties in evacuation, the patient arrived 20 hours after the wounding. There was no indication for the arteriography. The interruptions of the continuity of the superficial femoral artery in length of approximately 10 cm and of deep femoral vein in length of 8 cm

The extended deep inferior epigastric pedicle flap for lower extremity reconstruction.

Large soft-tissue defects of the lower extremity can present a challenging reconstructive problem. The extended deep inferior epigastric pedicle flap is a versatile and reliable flap that can be used for the coverage of complex lower extremity soft-tissue defects as far distal as the knee. We reviewed our 5-year experience with 20 consecutive extended deep inferior epigastric pedicle flaps used to cover lower extremity defects. All wounds, including 4 soft-tissue defects of the knee, were successfully covered. Two minor complications occurred. Flap anatomy, surgical approach, and new refinemen

Arterial injuries below the knee: fifty-one patients with 82 injuries.

Clinical features of tibial and peroneal artery injuries are characterized in a review of 51 patients with 82 injured arteries. Injuries were penetrating in 34 (67%) patients and blunt in 17 (33%). Physical findings suggested arterial injuries in 42 (82%) patients, but nine had no signs of vascular trauma. Nineteen patients with no palpable distal pulses had average preoperative delays of nearly 5 hours, suggesting a lack of appreciation for the morbid potential of these injuries. Operations included ligations of single-vessel injuries and arterial reconstructions in the 21 (41%) patients with

Non-diabetic necrobiosis lipoidica. Hitherto unrecognized papulonecrotic, nodulo-ulcerative and familial forms of the disease.

Necrobiosis lipoidica of the legs, in which deep ulcers resembling erythema induratum, gummas or a variety of other chronic progressive ulcerating skin diseases occur, is described. In 2 cases the lesions were precipitated by a crush injury elsewhere in the same leg, but not at the site of the ultimate lesions. In 2 further pairs of siblings the same problem arose as a familial complaint without trauma. These cases were distinguished by severe necrosis in the absence of diabetes.

Predictors of Persistent Postoperative Numbness Following Lumbar Fusion in Patients Older Than 75 Years: A Minimum 2-Year Follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preoperative and perioperative predictors of persistent leg numbness following lumbar fusion in patients aged ≥ 75 years. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study examined 304 patients aged ≥ 75 years who underwent lumbar fusion for lumbar degenerative disease (102 men, 202 women; mean age, 79.2 [75-90] years). The visual analogue scale (VAS) score for leg numbness was examined preoperatively and at 2 years postoperatively. The persistent leg numbness group included patients with a 2-year postoperative VAS score for leg numbness ≥ 5 points. The demographic da

Profiling injuries sustained following implementation of a progressive load carriage program in United States marine corps recruit training.

BACKGROUND: Load carriage tasks during United States Marine Corps (USMC) recruit training can cause injury. Load carriage conditioning, if optimized, can reduce injury risk. OBJECTIVE: To compare injuries sustained by USMC recruits following participation in either the Original Load Carriage (OLC) program or a Modified Load Carriage (MLC) program. METHODS: Retrospective musculoskeletal injury data were drawn from the USMC San Diego Sports Medicine injury database for recruits completing the OLC (n = 2,363) and MLC (n = 681) programs. Data were expressed as descriptive statistics and a popula

[Injuries in elite athletes in the olympic period from 2008 to 2012].

INTRODUCTION: Research related to injuries of elite athletes is very demanding in comparison to research on injuries in team sports, and therefore, there are a lot fewer resources and data on injuries in track and field sports than in other sports. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The research included 78 athletes who were the members of junior and senior national track and field team of Serbia (34 women and 44 men), aged 15 to 32 years. The research was conducted in the official training camp for the national selection in Bar (Montenegro) by using a non-standardized survey research technique, an anonymo

Physical characteristics as risk factors for sports injuries: a four year prospective study.

A variety of physical characteristics of athletes has been proposed to be related to the risk to sustain a sports injury. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of flexibility, anthropometric characteristics and malalignment of the lower extremities on the risk to sustain a sports injury, using a prospective study design and subjects exposed to rather equal extrinsic risk factors. Physical education students (N = 136) were followed during their four-year education. Sixteen flexibility indices, four anthropometric characteristics and five malalignment indices of the lower e

[Injuries in Ice Hockey: A Questionnaire Survey in Second League Amateur Ice Hockey Players in the Canton of Bern (Switzerland)].

BACKGROUND: High speed, fights at the hard boarder or contact with the puck, hockey sticks or skates may cause injuries in ice hockey players. Precise knowledge of epidemiologic data is needed for adequate prevention of hockey injuries and to plan their management. In Switzerland, to date, such epidemiological data are not available for amateur ice hockey. The aim of this study was to evaluate injury frequency, injury location, type of injury, injury severity and injury mechanisms, prevention measures and access to care in case of injury in second division amateur ice hockey teams of the Canto

Hoverboards: A new cause of pediatric morbidity.

INTRODUCTION: The hoverboard, a self-balancing powered scooter, was introduced to the market in 2015 and quickly became one of the most popular purchases of the year. As with similar products, this scooter brought a host of concerns surrounding injuries. The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of injuries that coincided with the popularity of hoverboard. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried from 2011 through 2015 for injuries related to scooters/skateboards, powered (product number, 5042), which includes the hoverboard. Patient data o

The epidemiology of NCAA men's lacrosse injuries, 2009/10-2014/15 academic years.

BACKGROUND: Participation in lacrosse has grown at the collegiate levels. However, little research has examined the epidemiology of collegiate men's lacrosse injuries. This study describes the epidemiology of injuries in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's lacrosse during the 2009/10-2014/15 academic years. METHODS: Twenty-five men's lacrosse programs provided 63 team-seasons of data for the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA-ISP) during the 2009/10-2014/15 academic years. Injuries occurred from participation in an NCAA-sanctioned practice or competition, and required at

Jumping Asymmetries and Risk of Injuries in Preprofessional Ballet.

BACKGROUND: Preprofessional ballet dancers are exposed to the risk of injuries, primarily in the lower extremities, with most injuries occurring during jumping and landing activities. Interlimb asymmetry during jumping and landing activities has been associated with the injury risk in adolescent athletes, but this has not been examined in dancers. PURPOSE: To investigate associations between interlimb asymmetry during a double-leg countermovement jump (DL-CMJ) and single-leg jump (SLJ) and the injury risk in adolescent preprofessional ballet dancers. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evid

A novel reconstruction technique for the knee and upper one third of lower leg.

Various reconstructive choices for the coverage of soft tissue defects around the knee joint or upper one third of lower leg are available depending on the location, size and depth of the defect. The authors have found the medial sural artery perforator island flap a useful method for reconstruction of the upper one third of lower leg and knee. From January 2003 to November 2005, medial sural perforator island flaps were used on six patients, five were men and one was a woman. The largest flap obtained was 16 x 7 cm. In three cases, defects were located on the upper one third of lower leg and
