Because of the deletion of a segment of the chromosome during the formation of a ring, several clinical findings may be associated with ring chromosomes. Ring chromosome 13 is one of such disorders in which the genotype-phenotype correlation is stronger by virtue of the accumulating literature. It can be associated with multiple congenital abnormalities and severe mental retardation. We report a case with mosaic ring chromosome 13 whose prenatal ultrasound revealed bilateral ventriculomegaly. Anal atresia, unidentifiable external genitalia, and an absent thumb were observed in the postmortem e

PURPOSE: We preoperatively assessed neurovesical function and spinal cord function in children with anorectal malformations. In cases of neurovesical dysfunction we looked for an association with vertebral malformation or myelodysplasia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 80 children with anorectal malformations via preoperative urodynamics and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine. Bladder compliance and volume, detrusor activity and vesicosphincteric synergy during voiding allowed urodynamic evaluation. Results were reported according to Wingspread and Krickenbeck classific

PURPOSE: To determine the anorectal function in patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) in order to facilitate patient counseling and follow-up.
METHODS: Data were collected by the German network for urorectal malformations (CURE-Net) according to the International Krickenbeck consensus. Questionnaires on bowel function and a defecation protocol were completed by the families/patients. The clinical findings were assessed from the patients' clinical records.
RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-seven patients with ARM were assessed, 175 patients gave complete data on continence, 52 of them wer

PURPOSE: To evaluate an experimental model for anorectal anomalies and their principal associated malformations induced by ethylene thiourea (ETU).
METHODS: Rat fetuses were utilized, divided into two groups: experimental group - fetuses from rats that received ETU on the 11th day of gestation at the dose of 125 mg/kg, diluted in distilled water to 1% concentration (12.5 ml/kg); and control group - fetuses from rats that received distilled water alone, at a volume of 12.5 ml/kg. On the 21st day of gestation, the animals were sacrificed by hypoxia in a carbon dioxide chamber, followed by lapar

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by pathogenic variants in the UBR1 gene. JBS is usually suspected based on characteristic anomalies, but only genetic testing provides a definitive diagnosis. Since most variants are inherited from the parents, we aimed to identify the causal variants in a Czech proband with clinically suspected JBS and perform segregation analysis.
METHODS: A proband with clinically suspected JBS underwent clinical exome sequencing (CES). Sanger sequencing was used for the validation, characterization, and segregat

PURPOSE: Due to the large abdominal defect from the omphalocele and extreme pubic diastasis in cloacal exstrophy (CE), bioprosthetic material may be used to bridge this gap during abdominal closure in CE. This study examined presurgical factors associated with the use of bioprosthetic materials in CE closure and complications in these patients.
METHODS: An institutional database of exstrophy-epispadias complex patients was reviewed for CE. Inclusion criteria included CE and primary closure performed at the host institution from 1998 to 2018. Data collection included demographics, presurgical

Johanson-Blizzard syndrome is a rare congenital autosomal recessive disease characterized by the association of congenital deficiency of the exocrine pancreatic function and multiple malformations. One of the most common manifestations of this pathology is sensorineural hearing loss of different severity and anomalous development of the inner ear. The case of cochlear implantation in the patient presenting with bilateral sensorineural deafness, congenital malformation of the inner ear, and stenosis of the internal auditory canal is reported.

Branchial cleft cysts, sinuses, and fistulas are the most common congenital lateral neck lesions in children. They arise as a result of an abnormal development of the branchial arches and their corresponding ectoderm-lined branchial clefts. Of these diverse anomalies, second branchial cleft lesions are the most common, accounting for approximately 95% of all branchial arch pathologies. We describe what is to the best of our knowledge the first reported case of an ectopic tooth in a branchial cleft anomaly. The patient was a young girl who had other congenital abnormalities and syndromic featur

AIM: The aim of this study was to present an alternative way to use both the posterior sagittal approach combined with laparoscopy for the repair of select cases of anorectal malformation (ARM).
METHODS: The laparoscopic approach was used for rectal dissection, ligation of the fistula, and division of vessels to pull the rectum down in cases of ARM with recto-bladderneck or high prostatic fistula. The posterior sagittal incision we believe made the perineal portion safer, allowing for rectal tapering when necessary, and for accurate placement of the rectum, anchored in the center of the sphin

Disorders of sex differentiation (DSD) are a heterogeneous and broad spectrum group of diseases with a varied appearance. Presence of an accessory phallus with a phallic urethra in association with a normal vagina in a female is an extremely uncommon anomaly. We present a rare case of a genotypically female child with a normal urethra and vagina in association with a phallus, accessory phallic urethra, perineal lipoma and anterior ectopic anus.

This article explains why emergency nurse practitioners and their primary care colleagues should not be complacent about the ease with which apparently common conditions can be treated and should always be aware of unusual diagnoses. With reference to a case study of a young child who presented to an emergency department with suspected gastroenteritis, it explains how, after previous medical history and x-rays had been studied, a more complex and potentially harmful condition was diagnosed. It goes on to discuss how this condition, giant faecoloma, should be treated and how the families of you

Fetal bowel calcifications were observed at 24 weeks of gestation in a male fetus, suggesting an anorectal malformation (ARM) with rectourethral fistula. At birth, the newborn presented with complex ARM including anal atresia, rectourethral fistula, and esophageal atresia. The prenatal sonographic visualization of calcifications within distended bowel should raise the suspicion of ARM including anal atresia and rectourethral fistula, the presence of such calcification depending on the timing of onset of fistula formation.

STUDY DESIGN: A family study to reach the diagnosis of a multiple malformation syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the cause of torticollis, in a patient with the VATER association.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The VATER association is a combination of vertebral anomalies, anal stenosis, tracheo-esophageal fistula, and radial anomalies. It needs a multidisciplinary approach with a major input from orthopedic surgeons. Torticollis in this condition has not been reported before.
METHODS: Detailed family history and radiologic study using plain radiographs and three-dimensional-reconstruction.

In nineteen seventy two Towns and Brocks reported on a family in which the father and seven children showed anal atresia, triphalangeal thumb, metatarsal synostosis, extra fingers, neurosensorial deafness and ear abnormalities. The main traits were those related to hand, ear and anus alterations, transmitted under a dominant autosomal pattern. In this paper we present several members of the same family with similar alterations who finally were diagnosed of Townes-Brocks syndrome.

We report on two patients with an unusual combination of multiple congenital anomalies including holoprosencephaly, encephalocele, and additional defects commonly observed in the VACTERL and schisis "associations." One of the infants had a chromosome abnormality characterized by partial duplication and deletion of chromosome 18. VACTERL association was characterized recently as a primary developmental field defect (DFD) [Martínez-Frías et al., 1998: Am J Med Genet 76:291-296]. In some cases, sequences may also represent uncomplicated DFDs. We suggest that findings in both of these cases repres
