Pharyngolaryngeal migration: a delayed complication of an impacted bullet in the neck.

We present a case of a patient who sustained a bullet wound to the mouth and face resulting in impaction of the foreign body in the neck. This was initially managed conservatively until migration into the supralaryngeal area occurred. This resulted in airway obstruction, dysphagia, and dysphonia necessitating resuscitation and per-operative intrapharyngeal removal. Bullet wounds are uncommon in this country and experience with these cases is lacking. This paper discusses the various management options and the mechanism of how the bullet became lodged in the tissues of the neck.

Nodus migrans: the case of the migrating knot.

Flow-directed pulmonary artery catheters provide important information regarding intravascular volume status, cardiac function and vascular resistance. We describe an unusual complication of pulmonary artery catheterization in which a knot formed at the distal end was torn away from the catheter body and migrated from its original position in the right subclavian vein to a distal branch of the right pulmonary artery. Careful attention to insertion and withdrawal techniques could prevent this potentially serious complication.

Translocation of inhaled asbestos fibers from the lung to other tissues.

To investigate translocation of asbestos fibers, tissue samples from 13 North American insulators were examined, using electron microscopy. Of the two major types of asbestos, chrysotile and amosite, chrysotile was found to be much more active in the translocation than amosite, being the fiber mainly detected in mesotheliomas and hyaline plaques.

The fate of swallowed button batteries in children.

The method of treatment and fate of 41 button batteries ingested by 34 children were analysed; 31 batteries were in the stomach and 10 beyond the pylorus. In 31 batteries situated in the stomach, removal by magnet tube technique was attempted in 30 batteries, 25 being successfully taken out, while 5 failed passing through the pylorus at the duodenum. One was removed endoscopically, since a magnet tube was not available. The remaining 10 batteries in 10 children were found at different levels from the duodenum to the rectum. In addition, 5 batteries were pushed down from the stomach during magn

[Nonsurgical retrieval of intra-cardiovascular catheter fragments].

Migrated intra-cardiovascular fragments from broken catheters were retrieved transvenously in 6 cases. In all of these cases, the catheters had been used for total parenteral nutrition. The catheter fragments were lodged in the pulmonary artery in 3 cases and in the right atrium in the others. A basket-type grasping forceps modified for this retrieval technique was inserted via the subclavian vein, femoral vein or basilic vein percutaneously. The migrated catheter fragments were removed successfully without any clinical complications in all 6 cases. Appropriate evaluation of the lodging site a

The management of complications of Foley feeding gastrostomies.

The recent modification of the Ponsky technique of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy places a Foley catheter in the stomach instead of a mushroom catheter. Experience with four patients with long term Foley feeding gastrostomies revealed two types of complications that occurred 23 times, a) the rupture of the balloon fourteen times allowing the catheter to slip out and b) distal migration of the balloon causing intestinal obstruction nine times. Since long term feeding gastrostomies using a Foley catheter will continue to be used and probably increase with the recent modifications of the PEG

RETROPUPILLARY SULCUS GAS MIGRATION AFTER RETINAL DETACHMENT REPAIR SURGERY.

PURPOSE: To elucidate etiology and management of retropupillary sulcus migration of intravitreal gas after uneventful retinal detachment repair surgery. METHODS: A 70-year-old White man presented with a temporal macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. A 25-gauge (25 G) pars plana vitrectomy was performed with cryopexy to retinal tear and 12% C3F8 gas tamponade under sub-Tenon anesthesia. At 1 week review, there was an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) of 28 mmHg with migration of gas to the retropupillary space. Superiorly, iris was displaced anteriorly causing iridocorneal touch. The

Delayed inferior vena cava-to-right ventricle bullet embolism following abdominal gunshot injury in somalia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bullet embolism is an uncommon consequence of gunshot wounds, with venous migration to the right heart reported sporadically in the literature. Diagnostic delays are frequent in low-resource settings, where advanced imaging and endovascular retrieval are limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old Somali man sustained an abdominal gunshot injury managed by emergency laparotomy; the projectile was not retrieved. Postoperative paraplegia required lumbar spinal fixation. Eight weeks later after the initial injury, serial radiography demonstrated cranial migration of the retained bulle

Peripheral Vasculature Embolization with the Onyx Liquid Embolic System in a Swine Model.

PURPOSE: To characterize the histologic and inflammatory changes that resulted from peripheral embolization using ethylene vinyl alcohol ([EVOH]; Onyx) in an animal model. This study also assessed the radiopacity of the Onyx after a 1-minute mixing time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Embolization using EVOH alone or in combination with coils/plugs was performed on large-vessel, small-vessel, and very-small-vessel (3-5 mm, 1-3 mm, and <1 mm in diameter, respectively) targets in the peripheral vasculature of Yucatan miniature pigs. Multiple formulations of EVOH were used. Angiography at 1, 3, and 12 m

K-wire Migration Following Acromioclavicular Joint Fixation: A Case Report.

Kirschner wire (K-wire) is commonly used for temporary fixation of bone fractures, particularly in pediatric patients, but it poses risks such as breakage and migration. We present the case of a 67-year-old patient who underwent acromioclavicular joint fixation with K-wires after an injury. Nine months post-surgery, a wire fragment was found to have broken and migrated to the neck area. The migration led to the development of a pseudoaneurysm, which required surgical intervention for removal. The wire fragment was successfully removed, and the aneurysm was repaired after rupture. This case hig

[Guidewire Migration into the Right Ventricle During Leadless Pacemaker Insertion, Requiring Surgical Removal of the Guidewire and Tricuspid Valve Repair:Report of a Case].

In a 77-year-old man, there was difficulty in removing a guidewire that had strayed into the right ventricle during leadless pacemaker insertion. Surgical removal was required. During removal of the wire, the tendon cords of the anterior tricuspid valve were pulled out, resulting in acute severe tricuspid regurgitation. The patient underwent tricuspid valve repair under cardiac arrest. He had a good postoperative course, a permanent pacemaker was implanted on postoperative day 14, and he was discharged on postoperative day 20. Although complications associated with catheter procedures have bee

A two-person collaborative repositioning approach for high peritoneal dialysis catheter migration: case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis catheter migration, a common complication in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, often leads to poor dialysate drainage, infection, and abdominal pain. Timely and effective treatment of catheter migration is essential to ensure uninterrupted dialysis. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents three cases of peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter displacement in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), involving three elderly individuals aged 80, 81, and 76 years. All instances of catheter displacement were primarily localized to the upper abdominal region. Fo

Bowel Obstruction Caused by Migration of an Intra-Gastric Balloon: A Rare Case Treated Laparoscopically.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic bariatric therapies, such as intra-gastric balloons (IGB) offer a less invasive, efficacious, and safe approach to facilitate weight loss in obese individuals. While typically tolerated, rare complications, including intestinal migration of the IGB, can occur and lead to serious sequelae such as mechanical bowel obstruction. This case report details the diagnostic process and successful laparoscopic surgical management of an unusual instance of IGB migration resulting in small bowel obstruction. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 32-year-old woman who developed a small

Delayed open-heart operation to remove migrated intracardiac inferior vena cava stents in a living donor liver transplantation recipient: a case report.

Intracardiac migration of inferior vena cava (IVC) filter or stent is a rare but potentially fatal complication of endovascular venous device placement. There is no consensus whether migrated stents should be surgically removed by open cardiac surgery or retrieved by the percutaneous endovascular route and whether an intervention should be performed immediately or expectantly. Herein, we report a 39-year-old female who received emergent left lobe living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) owing to posthepatectomy liver failure. She underwent angioplasty for IVC stenosis 13 days after her LDLT d

Migration of cervical spine screws to the sacral canal: a case report.

Cervical open door laminoplasty is widely used in multilevel decompression, which is a motion-sparing decompression treatment option for multilevel cervical myelopathy. Implant distance migration in cervical laminoplasty has not been reported. A 61-year-old woman underwent cervical laminoplasty, three months postoperatively, she experienced left shoulder pain and left upper limb pain, and underwent cervical magnetic resonance imaging, which showed no abnormalities. She gradually developed dizziness, headache, unstable walking, incomplete urinary incontinence, and fluctuating neck lumps. The X-

Bilateral Rod Loosening and Sequential Distal Migration after Thoracolumbar Junction Fracture Stabilization.

Distal rod migration remains uncommon and has been reported in a variety of anatomical locations, including the retroperitoneal region, knee, and pelvis. It is postulated that spinal fixation without fusion might allow the mechanical system some vulnerability to motion effects of the spine. Bilateral distal rod migration is rarer still. We report the interesting scenario of sequential and delayed bilateral rod migration 17 months after thoracolumbar fracture stabilization.

Moving silicone oil particles in the ventricle: a case report and updated review.

BACKGROUND: The movement of intraventricular silicone oil observed in the supine position is extremely rare. Herein, we describe a patient who presented with dynamically moving silicone oil particles in the ventricle when changing position and provide an updated review of this phenomenon. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with intraventricular hyperdensities that were occasionally found on brain computed tomography (CT). Initial nonenhanced brain CT demonstrated nondependent hyperdensities in the bilateral anterior horns of the lateral ventricles, the th

Bladder Neck Contracture with Hem-o-Lok Clips Migration after Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Hem-o-lok clips are widely used in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). However, clips-related complications have been reported, including intravesical migration. Here, we share a 60-year-old male case with newly diagnosed prostatic adenocarcinoma. With an unfavorable intermediate risk, he was admitted for RARP. He was discharged from hospital without any immediate complications. However, he reported progressive dysuria and slow urine stream 6 months after surgery. Cystoscopy showed severe bladder neck contracture (BNC), and 2 Hem-o-lok clips were found intravesically and removed dur
