Results on seven cases of osteosarcoma are reported, based on new morphologic methods and quantitative procedures. Tumor tissue was embedded without prior decalcification in plastic and sectioned. Imprint cytology preparations were produced from fresh tumor tissue, and cell nuclei were measured with an electronic image analysing computer system. The loss of differentiation seen in osteosarcomas differs among osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts. The differentiation of osteoclasts, namely their resorptive characteristics, disappears relatively early. Tumor osteocytes show loss of differenti

A 31-year-old woman was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department with a hard swelling in the right floor of the mouth which had the clinical appearance of a salivary calculus. Plain radiography did not demonstrate a radiopacity; however, subsequent ultrasound examination supported this finding. Three months after the initial consultation, while waiting for removal of the calculus, the patient re-presented with mobility of the lower anterior teeth and progressive swelling, prompting repeat orthopantomography and an urgent computed tomography scan of the mandible. These revealed

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for the recurrence of conventional ameloblastoma (AM) and develop a predictive nomogram model for postoperative recurrence.
METHODS: Clinical, pathological, and radiographic data from 235 patients treated at the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University (2005-2022) were retrospectively analyzed. Logistic regression identified independent prognostic factors, and a nomogram model was constructed using R software.
RESULTS: Multilocularity, cortical bone perforation, and inferior alveolar nerve involvement significantly increased recurrence risk in conve

We present the case of a 27-year-old woman with a history of left breast invasive ductal carcinoma who developed mandibular osteosarcoma, as documented by 2 MDP bone scans. She had undergone a radical mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and intravenous zoledronic acid therapy. An initial bone scan 1 year later showed increased MDP uptake in the right mandible, suggesting drug-related osteonecrosis, but concurrent CT scans were normal. A follow-up bone scan performed 16 months later demonstrated increased MDP uptake in both mandibles. Subsequent partial mandibulectomy confirmed conventional

INTRODUCTION: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a benign lesion originating from the dental lamina or its remnants. It is a relatively uncommon neoplasm representing about 3% of all odontogenic tumors. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical and radiological characteristics of AOTs in five major tertiary centres in Nigeria.
METHODS: Archival hospital-based data stores of five tertiary health facilities in Nigeria were accessed. Case files and biopsy records were retrieved to obtain relevant information. Data was collected according to a proforma for standardization and entered

INTRODUCTION: Malignant schwannoma is a rare peripheral nerve-sheath tumour. It represents 5 to 10% of soft tissue sarcomas according to Grobmyer et al. in 2008 [1]. The cervico-facial localisation is very rare, representing only 1% of mandibular tumours.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 64-year-old male patient who developed a malignant schwannoma at the level of the inferior dental nerve. In spite of the initial complete resection of this lesion, the patient has developed a recurrence with a proximal extension. For this reason, he has been transferred to our centre, where we conducted a w

Transplant-transmitted malignances are rare but devastating events. Primary brain tumors are the least common among reported donor-derived malignancies. We report a case of donor-transmitted pineoblastoma, a PNET, in a two-yr-old male recipient, who presented with a rapidly growing mass in the right mandible, four months after multiple visceral organ transplantation. The recipient had liver, pancreas, and small bowel transplants because of end-stage liver failure and short gut syndrome, which was secondary to large bowel resection for management of gastroschisis complicated by intestinal volvu

The typical forms of mixed odontogenic tumors in the jaws of children and adolescents are ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibroodontoma, complex odontoma, and compound odontoma. Ameloblastic fibromas (AFs) are true, mixed, soft tissue neoplasms, deriving from the proliferation of both odontogenic epithelium and mesenchyma. They have a potential for both recurrence and malignant transformation. Ameloblastic fibroodontomas (AFOs) may be regarded as hamartomas, which exhibit epithelial, mesenchymal, and abundant hard tissue components of the developing teeth. Odontomas are calcifying benign ha

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiological and clinical features of central haemangioma of the jaws.
METHODS: A total of 86 cases (84 from the English-language literature and two new cases) were studied and critically evaluated with emphasis on the radiological features.
RESULTS: Age at time of initial diagnosis ranged from 0 to 74 years (mean 23 years, median 17 years). There was approximately equal distribution between females and males. The ratio between the mandible and maxilla was 3.3:1. Of the lesions, 69% were located in the posterior region of the jaws. Lesion

Cemento-ossifying fibromas are slow growing, benign lesions. Recurrence is considered rare. A mandibular periapical radiolucent lesion in a 30-year-old female was diagnosed histologically as a cemento-ossifying fibroma and excised. A recurrence was found 2 years and 6 months postoperatively. CT demonstrated that the recurrent lesion was larger than indicated by conventional radiography.

Sixty-four cases of neoplastic benign fibro-osseous lesions are presented, with clinical and radiographic follow-up in 23 instances. A marked predilection for female patients was observed, with the majority or cases arising in the molar-premolar region of the mandible. Radiographically, these neoplasms are well demarcated and may be radiolucent, radiolucent with central opacification (target appearance), or multilocular radiolucent. A benign fibro-osseous histopathologic pattern is observed with osseous, cemental, and/or ovoid-curvoid calcified deposits. This feature, along with confinement to

The synovial cell sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumour which mostly occurs associated with or in a large joint. To date, the histogenetic origin has been discussed controversially and there is still no agreement as to whether it arises from normal synovium of joints, tendon sheaths or bursae, specialised forms of mesenchymal tissue (arthrogenous mesenchyma) or ordinary connective tissue. The tumour rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Only about 76 cases world-wide have been described up to now. We report on a case of a 30-year old man with a synovial cell sarcoma of the temporomand

PURPOSE: The present study was undertaken to evaluate our recent experience with mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and to identify factors that contribute to its progress.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 114 patients who had been treated for ORN during a 16-year period (1989 to 2004) were reviewed. The patients were then divided into 2 groups according to their response to conservative treatment. Group 1 consisted of patients whose ORN resolved with conservative treatment (n = 47). Group 2 consisted of patients whose ORN was unresolved with conservative treatment or who had req

The objective of this study is to evaluate usefulness of mandibular reconstructions using a custom-made titanium mesh (Ti-mesh) tray and particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM). A consecutive nine patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction were enrolled in this study. They were five men and four women (mean age: 53.9 years). Virtual reality simulation was performed using computer software based on the pre-operative computed tomography data. A 3-dimensional (3-D) skull model was constructed using a 3-D printer. A tray was custom-made from a Ti-mesh sheet bent to adapt to the model.

Metastases of the articular process, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), are rare findings. Their frequency is around 5% of patients with metastatic involvement of the mandible. The most common primary tumor is adenocarcinoma of the lung in women and adenocarcinoma of the prostate in men. The authors present 3 patients with TMJ metastasis. These were metastasis of breast adenocarcinoma, prostate adenocarcinoma, and lung adenocarcinoma. TMJ metastases are rare but complicated to diagnose because their presence may be accompanied by symptoms typical of other TMJ diseases (discopathy, arthritis, osteo

INTRODUCTION: The role of marginal mandibulectomy and other conservative resective procedures for patients with early cortical mandibular invasion from squamous carcinoma of the oral cavity remains poorly defined. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative assessment for bone invasion and the outcomes of different mandibular resective procedures that preserve mandibular continuity.
METHODS: The charts of 222 patients treated at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center between 1960 and 1990 were reviewed. All patients had a biopsy-confirmed
