One simple question detects motion sickness susceptibility in migraine patients.

OBJECTIVE: To find out if motion sickness susceptibility (MSS) of vestibular migraine (VM) patients and migraine only (MO) patients can be reliably detected with a single simple question: "Can you read while travelling in a car without getting motion sick?". METHOD: Ninety-two definite VM and 58 MO patients and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects were asked about their MSS and about being able to read while riding in a car without becoming motion sick. A Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ-Short) including childhood (MSA), adulthood (MSB) and total (MST) parts was also administere…

Hybrid Rehabilitation System with Motion Estimation Based on EMG Signals.

Patients with upper limb paralysis undergo various types of rehabilitation to reconstruct upper limb functions necessary for their return to daily life and social activities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective rehabilitation support system using robotic technologies. In this study, we propose an EMG-driven hybrid rehabilitation system based on the estimation of intended motion using a probabilistic neural network. In the proposed system, the developed robot and functional electrical stimulation are controlled by estimating the patient's intention, which enables the intuitive le…

Autonomous motion and control of lower limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot.

Introduction: The lower limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot should perform gait planning based on the patient's motor intention and training status and provide multimodal and robust control schemes in the control strategy to enhance patient participation. Methods: This paper proposes an adaptive particle swarm optimization admittance control algorithm (APSOAC), which adaptively optimizes the weights and learning factors of the PSO algorithm to avoid the problem of particle swarm falling into local optimal points. The proposed improved adaptive particle swarm algorithm adjusts the stiffness a

[Research progress of optical motion capture technology in shoulder biomechanics].

The shoulder joint is the most flexible joint in the body with the largest range of motion, and the movement pattern is more complex. Accurate capture of three-dimensional motion data of the shoulder joint is crucial for biomechanical evaluation. Optical motion capture systems offer a non-invasive and radiation-free method to capture shoulder joint motion data during complex movements, enabling further biomechanical analysis of the shoulder joint. This review provides a comprehensive overview of optical motion capture technology in the context of shoulder joint movement, including measurement …

Using motion capture technology to assess locomotor development in children.

OBJECTIVE: Motor and cognitive development share biological background within the prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. Monitoring motor development is relevant to identify children at risk of developmental delays. However, access to timely assessment is prevented by its availability and cost. Affordable motion capture technology may provide an alternative to human assessment. METHODS: MotorSense uses this technology to guide and assess children executing age-related developmental motor tasks. It incorporates advanced heuristics informed by pattern recognition principles based on the developmenta…

Identifying behavioral structure from deep variational embeddings of animal motion.

Quantification and detection of the hierarchical organization of behavior is a major challenge in neuroscience. Recent advances in markerless pose estimation enable the visualization of high-dimensional spatiotemporal behavioral dynamics of animal motion. However, robust and reliable technical approaches are needed to uncover underlying structure in these data and to segment behavior into discrete hierarchically organized motifs. Here, we present an unsupervised probabilistic deep learning framework that identifies behavioral structure from deep variational embeddings of animal motion (VAME). …

Comparison of Trunk Motion between Moderate AIS and Healthy Children.

Analysis of kinematic and postural data of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients seems relevant for a better understanding of biomechanical aspects involved in AIS and its etiopathogenesis. The present project aimed at investigating kinematic differences and asymmetries in early AIS in a static task and in uniplanar trunk movements (rotations, lateral bending, and forward bending). Trunk kinematics and posture were assessed using a 3D motion analysis system and a force plate. A total of fifteen healthy girls, fifteen AIS girls with a left lumbar main curve, and seventeen AIS girls wit…

Measurable Lumbar Motion Remains 1 Year After Vertebral Body Tethering.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is growing in popularity for skeletally immature patients with scoliosis because of presumed preservation of spinal motion. Although results have shown preserved thoracic motion, there is minimal data to support motion over the lumbar instrumented segments after VBT. The purpose of this study was to analyze the range of motion of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spine after lumbar VBT. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients treated with lumbar VBT underwent low-dose biplanar flexion-extension and lateral bending radiographs at 1 year after surgery t…

Robust vestibular self-motion signals in macaque posterior cingulate region.

Self-motion signals, distributed ubiquitously across parietal-temporal lobes, propagate to limbic hippocampal system for vector-based navigation via hubs including posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and retrosplenial cortex (RSC). Although numerous studies have indicated posterior cingulate areas are involved in spatial tasks, it is unclear how their neurons represent self-motion signals. Providing translation and rotation stimuli to macaques on a 6-degree-of-freedom motion platform, we discovered robust vestibular responses in PCC. A combined three-dimensional spatiotemporal model captured data…

A Hybrid Tracking System of Full-Body Motion Inside Crowds.

For our understanding of the dynamics inside crowds, reliable empirical data are needed, which could enable increases in safety and comfort for pedestrians and the design of models reflecting the real dynamics. A well-calibrated camera system can extract absolute head position with high accuracy. The inclusion of inertial sensors or even self-contained full-body motion capturing systems allows the relative tracking of invisible people or body parts or capturing the locomotion of the whole body even in dense crowds. The newly introduced hybrid system maps the trajectory of the top of the head c…

Factors Affecting Range of Motion After Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Range of motion (ROM) after revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA) is an important clinical outcome, as decreased ROM can lead to patient dissatisfaction and diminished mobility. This study sought to determine the effect of type of revision, implant constraint level, and reason for revision has on RTKA ROM. METHODS: A retrospective review of 832 RTKA cases from 2011 to 2019 was conducted at a single, urban academic institution. Patients who underwent aseptic RTKA and had preoperative and 1-year postoperative ROM in their chart were included. The ΔROM was calculated by subtracting…

Correcting whole-body motion capture data using rigid body transformation.

Using motion capture data as a part of mobile brain-body imaging (MoBI) recording has been increasing. With minimal linear algebra background, this paper explains how the rigid body transformation can be a useful preprocessing step for denoising and missing marker recovery. Such a transformation can provide insight and necessary-and-sufficient solutions requiring no assumption other than the minimum number of markers present. First, a simulation test using the empirical datasets from the AudioMaze project published from this journal's same volume demonstrates theoretical accuracy. The simulati…

Carpal Motion in Chronic Geissler IV Scapholunate Interosseous Ligament Wrists.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the biomechanics of Geissler IV (G4) wrists in cadavers and compared them with intact specimens after multiple ligament sectioning to create scapholunate instability. It also evaluated carpal motion changes after sectioning of the lunotriquetral interosseous ligament (LTIL). METHODS: Eight cadaver wrists determined to be G4 arthroscopically were tested using a wrist joint motion simulator. The LTIL was then sectioned, and carpal motion was recorded again. Carpal motions were compared with 37 normal wrists after sectioning of the scapholunate interosseous ligament…

Linking Neuronal Direction Selectivity to Perceptual Decisions About Visual Motion.

Psychophysical and neurophysiological studies of responses to visual motion have converged on a consistent set of general principles that characterize visual processing of motion information. Both types of approaches have shown that the direction and speed of target motion are among the most important encoded stimulus properties, revealing many parallels between psychophysical and physiological responses to motion. Motivated by these parallels, this review focuses largely on more direct links between the key feature of the neuronal response to motion, direction selectivity, and its utilization…
