BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is the preferred choice for treating clavicle fractures. The brachial plexus injury caused by ORIF of a clavicle fracture is very rare. If it is not treated in time, the function of the brachial plexus will be challenging to recover, which will eventually lead to upper limb dysfunction and seriously affect the patient's quality of life. Our team recently used ORIF to treat a patient with a clavicle fracture, who developed brachial plexus injury symptoms after surgery.

CASE: A 25-year-old man sustained a right femur Hoffa fracture with an ipsilateral patella dislocation from a twisting injury to his right knee. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the right femur with medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction with allograft. One year postoperatively, he had returned to full activity and painless range of motion.
CONCLUSION: Hoffa fracture associated with ipsilateral patella dislocation is a rare injury in young men and warrants judicious clinician awareness. The literature regarding management of this injury combination is minimal

RATIONALE: Bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulders occurs rarely and the diagnosis is often challenging. This injury is often missed or delayed on initial presentation, leading to continuous pain, disability, and rising medical costs. Timely diagnosis and proper treatment are very important to restore shoulder function.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here we report 2 rare cases. Case 1 was a 53-year-old physical worker with severe pain and limited shoulder movement after an unexpected fall. Case 2 was a 55-year-old man with pain in upper limbs and shoulders after an electric shock.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of studies comparing treatments for displaced radial head fractures (RHFs) and perform a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS: We searched electronic databases and reviewed the reference lists of included studies and prior systematic reviews. We included RCTs and cohort studies that (1) compared treatments for displaced RHFs in adults and (2) reported a functional outcome or postoperative complications. Data from RCTs were synthesized using a Bayesian network meta-analysis. We compared th

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are common, and their incidence is increasing as the population ages. Despite this, postoperative rehabilitation remains unstandardized and little is known about surgeon preferences. The aim of this study was to assess differences in postoperative rehabilitation preferences and patient education between orthopedic trauma and shoulder surgeons.
METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed to members of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons to assess differences in postoperative rehabilitation preferences a

Very few case reports have been reported on traumatic separation of the bipartite patella along with quadriceps tendon rupture. These reports relate to separation of superolateral bipartite patella (Saupe type 3). We describe a new variant which to our knowledge has not been described or classified so far, which is purely a superior bipartite patella with traumatic separation and complete functional disruption of the extensor mechanism of the knee in a young patient working in the army which was managed with open reduction and internal fixation along with repair of the extensor mechanism of th

Management of injuries to the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joint complex continues to generate heated debate. Arthrodesis of the Lisfranc joint complex has historically been reserved as a salvage procedure for failed treatment. Recently, primary arthrodesis has emerged as a viable treatment alternative to open reduction and internal fixation for these injuries. The objective of this article was to examine the current literature regarding open reduction and internal fixation versus primary arthrodesis of Lisfranc injuries.

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fractures in children are extremely rare, accounting for approximately 1%-4.6% of all pediatric fractures. Due to their rarity, literature on these injuries is limited, with only a few reported cases. The primary objective of this study was to present a series of uncommon pediatric injuries, outline our management approach, and demonstrate that even patients undergoing delayed surgical intervention can achieve favorable clinical outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed records of skeletally immature patients with traumatic acetabular fractures

Periosteal sleeve fractures, or avulsions of cartilage and/or periosteum with or without an osseous fragment in skeletally immature individuals, are notoriously easy to miss and a high index of suspicion is necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment. While periosteal sleeve avulsion fractures are classically reported in the patella, they have also been reported in the shoulder, clavicle, and elsewhere in the knee. However, no published reports exist for a periosteal sleeve avulsion fracture in the hand. This case details the first reported instance of such an injury involving a thumb metac

PURPOSE: Following the introduction of the Regulation (EU) 2017/745 by the European Parliament, any bioactive substance or surgical implant introduced into the human body must be documented. The regulation requires any implant to be traced back to the manufacturer. Lot numbers need to be available for every single medical implant. Also, the manufacturer is required by law to provide implants individually packaged and sterilized. Previously, model tray systems (MOS tray) were used for osteosynthesis in oral and maxillofacial surgery, in which the individual implants could not be registered sepa

CASE: A pediatric male patient sustained a postoperative infection of the femoral neck after open anatomic reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a Delbet type III femoral neck fracture. Treatment included surgical intervention with antibiotic Steinmann pins incorporated into an external fixator to provide stability to the femoral neck. At the 27-month follow-up, films showed complete healing with a 1.67-cm leg length discrepancy, treated with a 1-cm shoe lift.
CONCLUSION: There is insufficient literature for the treatment of postoperative infection after ORIF in a pediatric patient. We pr

This study aimed to elucidate whether the stability of an unsintered hydroxyapatite particles/poly-l-lactide (uHA/PLLA) system is comparable with that of titanium, according to different load-bearing areas of the mandible. The study included patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the mandibular body, angle, or subcondylar fracture. The stability of uHA/PLLA systems was compared between the immediate and 6-month postoperative time points using three-dimensional cone-beam CT image analysis. The positional changes of each landmark were measured in three-dimensional (3D) co

The purpose of this study was aimed to compare the efficiency and safety of retromandibular versus modified Risdon approach using periangular incision for open reduction and internal fixation of low subcondylar mandibular fracture. Open reduction and internal fixation with different plating systems were utilized via retromandibular approach (group I) and via modified Risdon approach with periangular incision (group II). Twenty four (n= 24) condylar fractures in 21 adult patients were divided randomly into two equal groups (12 each) according to the cutaneous incision (approach) utilized. The e

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneus fractures can be devastating injuries, and operative treatment is fraught with complications. We are unaware of any studies evaluating all calcaneus fractures, both open and closed, treated operatively in the military. The purpose of this study is to evaluate all calcaneus fractures that required open reduction internal fixation to determine soldiers' ability to return to work and the need for additional surgeries.
METHODS: All active-duty patients undergoing open reduction internal fixation of calcaneus fractures from 2010-2016 were identified utilizing the Military H

Fractures of the acetabulum in elderly patients were often caused by low energy trauma. Fractures involving anterior column are more common and often associated with impaction and comminution. Osteoporosis further complicates the management. Percutaneous fracture fixation has low morbidity but it is a technically demanding procedure. Open reduction and fracture fixation is done with or without simultaneous total hip replacement. Delayed total hip replacement is considered in posttraumatic arthritis patients. Patients with minimal displaced fractures, associated both-column fractures with secon
