The oncologic and functional outcomes of nine patients who were treated by total sacrectomy through L5 (three cases) or L5-S1 (six cases) were reviewed. Histologic diagnoses were one osteosarcoma, two giant cell tumors, two chondrosarcomas, and four chordomas. Patients' ages ranged from 17 to 70 years (mean age, 44.5 years). Resection margins were intralesional (giant cell tumors) in two, marginal in one, and wide in six patients (one contaminated). Reconstruction was performed using polymethylmethacrylate in two, screw and plate fixation in one, and a custom-made device in one. In five patien

BACKGROUND: Treatment of diaphyseal open tibia fractures often results in reoperation and impaired quality of life. Few studies, particularly in resource-limited settings, have described factors associated with outcomes after these fractures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Which patient demographic, perioperative, and treatment characteristics are associated with an increased risk of reoperation after treatment of open tibia fractures with intramedullary nailing or an external fixation device in Tanzania? (2) Which patient demographic, perioperative, and treatment characteristics are associated with

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nail (IMN) fixation improves functional outcomes for the diaphyseal fractures of long bones. However, locking the distal holes of the IMN is challenging. Although several navigation methods have been proposed, an intuitive, radiation-free and accurate navigation method that does not suffer from problems of hand-eye coordination has not yet been described.
METHODS: This paper proposes an augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation method with hybrid optical and electromagnetic (EM) tracking for distal IMN interlocking. Model experiments are designed to evaluate the AR

Chronic osteomyelitis associated with soft-tissue defect following surgical management is a severe complication for orthopaedic surgeons. Traditionally, the treatment protocol for the notorious complication involved thorough debridement, bone grafting, long-term antibiotic use and flap surgery. Alternatively, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a high concentration of platelets collected via centrifugation, has been successfully used as an adjuvant treatment for bone and soft-tissue infection in medical practices. PRP has numerous significant advantages, including stypsis, inflammation remission and r

We demonstrate a novel method of endoscopic frontal-orbital advancement for the treatment of unicoronal craniosynostosis. The evolution of this cranioplasty modality burrows from an established precedent of safety and technical experience in strip craniectomies and endoscopic brow surgery. The procedure facilitates osteotomies similar to open frontal-orbital advancement and uses reabsorbable materials to achieve immediate intraoperative correction of unicoronal craniosynostosis through smaller incisions. The patients in the study underwent endoscopic frontal-orbital advancement and cranial vau

Interlocking nailing is a widely accepted and performed treatment for tibial shaft fractures. The addition of percutaneously placed transfixation screws increases the stabilisation provided by intramedullary nailing; however, the technical complexity associated with the procedure has introduced new potential complications. We report a pseudoaneurysm of the anterior tibial artery caused by a proximal interlocking screw after intramedullary nailing surgery to repair a tibial shaft fracture. The patient experienced complete relief of symptoms following removal of the nail and the screws, excision

BACKGROUND: Elective implant removal (IR) after fracture fixation is one of the most common procedures within (orthopedic) trauma surgery. The rate of surgical site infections (SSIs) in this procedure is quite high, especially below the level of the knee. Antibiotic prophylaxis is not routinely prescribed, even though it has proved to lower SSI rates in other (orthopedic) trauma surgical procedures. The primary objective is to study the effectiveness of a single intravenous dose of 2 g of cefazolin on SSIs after IR following fixation of foot, ankle and/or lower leg fractures.
METHODS: This is

BACKGROUND: Proximal femoral fracture (PFF), such as intertrochanteric femoral fracture or femur neck fracture, and its management are crucial issues to surgeons. PFF has been dramatically is becoming exponentially prevalent, and it is at high risk of complication and mortality because it is frequently associated with serious trauma and advanced age, especially in patients treated with anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. Surgical management is essential for the treatment of PFF. Unfortunately, current surgical procedures have been related to accompanied by vascular complications, including

Background The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the primary stabilisers of the knee, and injury to it often requires surgical intervention. ACL injuries are common sports injuries that tend to occur during sudden deceleration, pivoting, or landing movements, resulting in knee instability and decreased functionality. Different graft options have been proposed over the years for reconstructing the ACL. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the short-term functional, clinical stability, and biomechanical (muscle strength) outcomes following arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using a quadr

INTRODUCTION: Active middle-ear implants with floating-mass transducer (FMT) technology are used to treat mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing losses. The standard surgical approach for incus vibroplasty is a mastoidectomy and a posterior tympanotomy, crimping the FMT to the long incus process. An alternative fixation side with less surgical trauma might be the short incus process and incus body. The aim of this study was to develop and test a short incus process coupling device for its functional properties in temporal bone preparations and clinical practice.

PURPOSE: The LLIF procedure is a useful stand-alone and adjunct surgical approach for many spinal conditions. One complication of LLIF is subsidence of the interbody graft into the vertebral bodies, resulting in severe pain, impaired arthrodesis and potentially fracture of the body. Low bone density, as measured by T score on DEXA scanning, has also been postulated to increase the risk of subsidence.
METHODS: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data was performed on all patients who underwent LLIF at this institution consisting of 712 levels in 335 patients. Patients with subsid
