Long-lasting modulation of feature integration by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The human brain analyzes a visual object first by basic feature detectors. On the objects way to a conscious percept, these features are integrated in subsequent stages of the visual hierarchy. The time course of this feature integration is largely unknown. To shed light on the temporal dynamics of feature integration, we applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to a feature fusion paradigm. In feature fusion, two stimuli which differ in one feature are presented in rapid succession such that they are not perceived individually but as one single stimulus only. The fused percept is an in

Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing: Evidence from Huntington Disease: Corrigendum.

The purpose of this document is to update and correct Figure 4 from "Optimal Expectations and Limited Medical Testing: Evidence from Huntington Disease" (Oster, Shoulson, and Dorsey 2013). This figure documents how perceptions about the risk of HD evolve with symptoms. It compares these perceptions with the "actual risk" of HD based on a Bayesian updating calculation described in the paper. The construction of Figure 4 is correctly described in the text of the paper and the data on perceptions are documented correctly. However, the construction of the "actual risk" series is not accurate. Ther

A Human-Centered Multimodal Framework for Characterizing Safety-Relevant Driver Functional Domains: An Exploratory Study of Professional Bus Drivers.

This study proposes a human-centered multimodal framework for characterizing safety-relevant driver functional domains in professional bus drivers. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on isolated psychological or physical assessments, the proposed framework integrates self-perception, psychomotor performance, and cognitive-perceptual assessment to provide an exploratory, structured characterization of driver-related functional capacities. Eighteen professional bus drivers participated in this study. Self-perception data were obtained from all 18 participants, whereas psychomotor and cogni

Recent enough to matter: Perceived temporal proximity, anxiety, and COVID-19 vaccine intent.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy undermines vaccination strategies and is shaped by non-modifiable contextual and individual/group factors, and … ty (nearness or distance in time) has been explored less. Given research that the pandemic affected time perception, this study examined whether perceived temporal proximity predicts future COVID-19 vaccine intent, and whether this relationship is statistically mediated by COVID-19 anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey assessed whether temporal proximity wa …

Association of Prior Stroke With Health Care Perceptions of Adequate Emergency Care in Women.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of stroke represent a vulnerable patient population due to their extant disability, morbidity, and risk of recurrence. The association between prior stroke with patient experience and perception of emergency medical care is unknown. METHODS: We utilized data from the Health Care Experiences and Perception cross-sectional, online survey from the American Heart Association Research Goes Red Registry. Ordinal logistic regression models were performed to assess the association between a self-reported history of stroke in the prior 10 years and the perception of no

Reflux symptoms and oesophageal acidification in treated achalasia patients are often not reflux related.

OBJECTIVE: After treatment, achalasia patients often develop reflux symptoms. Aim of this case-control study was to investigate mechanisms underlying reflux symptoms in treated achalasia patients by analysing oesophageal function, acidification patterns and symptom perception. DESIGN: Forty treated achalasia patients (mean age 52.9 years; 27 (68%) men) were included, 20 patients with reflux symptoms (RS+; Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire (GORDQ) ≥8) and 20 without reflux symptoms (RS-: GORDQ <8). Patients underwent measurements of oesophagogastric junction distensibility, high-

Event-related potentials to overlapping shapes: effects of saliency and interference.

Visual perception is often challenged by various difficulties that act concomitantly and whose respective impacts may therefore be hard to distinguish. We used event-related potentials to dissociate the impact of target saliency, generated by occlusion, from that of interference produced by incongruent nontargets. In one block, the target (a square) partially occluded another square tilted by 45 degrees. This nontarget square interfered only to a small extent with target perception. In another block, the target was the occluded stimulus, and interference from the nontarget was substantial. Blo

Faces emotional expressions: from perceptive to motor areas in aged and young subjects.

The role of age in perception and production of facial expressions is still unclear. Therefore, this work compared, in aged and young subjects, the effects of passive viewing of faces expressing different emotions on perceptive brain regions, such as occipital and temporal cortical areas and on the primary motor cortex (M1) innervating lower face muscles. Seventeen young (24.41 ± 0.71 yr) and seventeen aged (63.82 ± 0.99 yr) subjects underwent recording of event-related potentials (ERP), of motor potentials evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation of face M1 in the depressor anguli oris mus

Relationship between COMT Gene Polymorphism, Anxiety, and Pain Perception during Labour.

BACKGROUND: The COMT gene polymorphism is associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders and pain perception. The present study investigates the existence of anxiety and pain perception in relation to the COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) gene polymorphism in labouring women (during "natural" childbirth) with or without inhaled analgesia. METHODS: A total of 181 women who chose vaginal birth were enrolled in this study. To present the difference in pain perception, the parturients were divided into one group (n = 90) that chose labour analgesia with inhaled nitrous oxide (50% nitrou

Induced deficits in speed perception by transcranial magnetic stimulation of human cortical areas V5/MT+ and V3A.

In this report, we evaluate the role of visual areas responsive to motion in the human brain in the perception of stimulus speed. We first identified and localized V1, V3A, and V5/MT+ in individual participants on the basis of blood oxygenation level-dependent responses obtained in retinotopic mapping experiments and responses to moving gratings. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was then used to disrupt the normal functioning of the previously localized visual areas in each participant. During the rTMS application, participants were required to perform delayed discrimination

Why do they do it? Long-term follow-up on the motivation to run in ultrarunners: findings of the ultrarunners longitudinal TRAcking (ULTRA) study.

Participants in the ULTRA Study completed surveys in 2014 and again in 2024 to assess long-term changes in motivation to run (Motivations of Marathoners Scale) and perception of success (Perception of Success Questionnaire). Of the 534 ultramarathon runners, 270 were still participating in ultramarathons at 10-year followup. Motivation declined across nearly all dimensions over 10 years, including personal goal achievement, competition, recognition, affiliation, psychological coping, life meaning, and self-esteem (all p<0.001). Health orientation showed no significant change (p = 0.084). Parti

The dual effects of information presentation speed on operator performance in dynamic tasks: a study in supervisory control and data acquisition interfaces.

Dynamic elements are increasingly used in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces to deliver real-time information and improve situational awareness. This study examined how information presentation speed affects operator performance, subjective perception, situational awareness, and eye-tracking metrics. Twenty operators performed simulated monitoring tasks under different speed conditions. Results showed that speeds above 8 degrees/s significantly increased task errors, while speeds at 16 degrees/s further impaired subjective experience and situational awareness. Eye-trac

Leaf-Stomata-Inspired 3D Suspended Ultrasensitive E-Skin for Dual-Modal Tactile and Nociceptive Sensing in Robotics.

Artificial sensory systems with synergistic tactile and nociceptive perception are essential for advanced human-robot interaction and environmental monitoring. However, developing scalable, tunable electronic skin (e-skin) that combines ultrasensitive tactile and nociceptive sensing remains challenging. Here, inspired by leaf stomata, we present a suspended biomimetic e-skin enabling 3D deformation-mechanical contact interactions for adjustable sensing. By integrating Langmuir-Blodgett assembly with a mechanical strategy, we achieve large-scale, precise alignment of metal nanowires and control

Factors associated with perceived stigma among people living with HIV/AIDS in post-conflict northern Uganda.

HIV-related stigma continues to persist in several African countries including Uganda. This study quantified the burden of stigma and examined factors associated with stigma among 476 people living with HIV (PLHTV) in Gulu, northern Uganda. Data were collected between February and May 2009 using the HIV/AIDS Stigma Instrument-PLWA. Females more than males, respondents aged above 30 years, and those who had been on antiretroviral therapy for a longer time experienced higher levels of stigma. Verbal abuse and negative self-perception were more common forms of stigma. The association between anti

Differential effects of glucocorticoids on human auditory perception.

It is assumed that glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, the hormones produced by the adrenal cortex, act as modulators of central nervous functions in addition to their well-known role in endocrine stress responses. More specifically, it has been suggested that adrenal corticoids cause changes in sensory thresholds. In two double-blind crossover studies we evaluated auditory perception in healthy volunteers after treatment with hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, and the respective placebos. Stapedial reflexes, pure tone and speech audiograms, and brainstem electric response audiometry served as

Object and setting identification in natural auditory scenesa).

Auditory scene perception allows listeners to identify both the setting and the objects within a scene, supporting decision-making and situational awareness. While visual scene and object recognition are well-studied, less is known about how listeners identify settings (e.g., forest) and objects (e.g., birds) in complex auditory environments. This study examined how scene duration influences listeners' ability to identify settings (e.g., café) and objects (e.g., music, talking, espresso machines) in natural auditory scenes. Participants listened to scenes of varying durations (1, 2, and 4 s) a

Faster key-press responses to front vowels than back vowels when matching heard vowels with represented vowels.

This study investigated key-press responses to five spoken Japanese vowels: [ɑ], [i], [ɯ], [e], and [o]. In the first experiment, 30 participants pushed only a single key when they listened to spoken Japanese vowels (response task). In the second experiment, another 29 participants matched the heard vowels with represented vowels by pushing one of five corresponding keys (matching task). The results of the first experiment showed no difference in the response times to the five vowels. In the second experiment, the response times to [i] and [e] were faster than those to [ɯ] and [o]. These resul

Feedforward attentional selection in sensory cortex.

Salient objects grab attention because they stand out from their surroundings. Whether this phenomenon is accomplished by bottom-up sensory processing or requires top-down guidance is debated. We tested these alternative hypotheses by measuring how early and in which cortical layer(s) neural spiking distinguished a target from a distractor. We measured synaptic and spiking activity across cortical columns in mid-level area V4 of male macaque monkeys performing visual search for a color singleton. A neural signature of attentional capture was observed in the earliest response in the input layer
