A Bimodal Imaging Wireless Capsule Endoscopy System With Precise Linear Magnetic Navigation and Motion-Robust Power Transfer.

Gastric cancer remains a global health challenge with high mortality rates, underscoring the urgent need for advanced diagnostic tools. While conventional gastroscopy encounters patient reluctance due to procedural discomfort, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) provides a non-invasive alternative but faces challenges, including intricate motion control, constrained power supply, and restricted detection capability. This study presents a bimodal imaging WCE system that integrates near-infrared fluorescence and white-light imaging, enhanced with linear magnetic navigation and motion-robust wireles

Integrated soft X-ray/visible fluorescence microscope using divided-pupil reflective optics for correlative cellular imaging.

Observing living cells in real time is crucial to elucidating the dynamic processes underlying cellular function. We developed an integrated correlative full-field microscope that enables soft X-ray and visible fluorescence imaging with a common field of view using divided-pupil reflective optics, without mechanical switching. Cellular imaging was performed using a water-window soft X-ray beam generated as the third harmonic of a soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL). Sequential fluorescence and soft X-ray imaging were carried out as a pilot study to verify the performance of the microscope.

Material and Design Strategies of Soft Microelectrode Arrays for Implantable Cardiac Interfaces.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. However, conventional diagnostic and therapeutic technologies are often bulky, limited in functionality, and lack the mechanical softness required for continuous high-fidelity monitoring and treatment of patients with life-threatening cardiac conditions. In recent years, advances in materials science, device engineering, and system integration have led to the development of mechanically compliant microelectrode arrays (MEAs) capable of monitoring and modulating cardiac electrical, optical, and mechanical ac

The choice of peritoneal dialysis catheter design: variants and clinical implications.

The success of peritoneal dialysis depends on the presence of a safe and well-functioning peritoneal access. The ideal catheter should be easy to place, durable, comfortable, and practical to use, while limiting the aesthetic impact and minimizing associated infectious as well as mechanical complications. The first catheter that came closest to fulfilling these criteria was designed by Tenckhoff in the late 1960s. Over the following fifty years, a variety of catheters have been developed, aiming to improve efficiency while reducing associated side effects. However, none of these newer designs

Detecting Secondary Medication Infusion Errors via Spectrophotometry.

Although intravenous (IV) smart pumps (IVSPs) are widely used to reduce medication errors, many IVSPs continue to depend on passive methods, such as an adequate hydrostatic head height differential (HHD), for the delivery of secondary medications. An adequate HHD ensures that the fluid level inside the secondary bag is sufficiently higher than the fluid level inside the primary bag, which is accomplished by lowering the primary bag with a supplied hanger to ensure the secondary medication is delivered preferentially. Poor clinical adherence to this requirement is common, conferring risk of med

Smart, automated junctional tourniquets leveraging AI-driven ultrasound guidance.

Tourniquets are commonly used devices for hemorrhage control; however, their effectiveness is reduced in anatomical junctions such as the neck and inguinal region. Junctional tourniquets specifically require precise placement to be effective. This precision can be enabled with ultrasound technology to help locate and occlude the major vessels in the junctional regions properly. However, interpretation of ultrasound requires highly skilled personnel, who may not necessarily be available in emergency situations. To overcome this hurdle, we have developed two ultrasound-enabled, AI-driven junctio

Visual-tactile pretraining and online multitask learning for humanlike manipulation dexterity.

Achieving humanlike dexterity with anthropomorphic multifingered robotic hands requires precise finger coordination. However, dexterous manipulation remains highly challenging because of high-dimensional action-observation spaces, complex hand-object contact dynamics, and frequent occlusions. To address this, we drew inspiration from the human learning paradigm of observation and practice and propose a two-stage learning framework by learning visual-tactile integration representations via self-supervised learning from human demonstrations. We trained a unified multitask policy through reinforc

Human Detection Capacity of Vehicle Front Sonar Sensors in Light and Small Passenger Cars and Minivan.

Sonar sensor systems have been developed to prevent collisions between vehicles and surrounding objects by employing ultrasonic sensors mounted at the front of the vehicle. These systems warn drivers when nearby obstacles are detected. However, relatively few studies have examined the capacity of sonar to detect humans. This study aims to clarify the human detection capacity of front sonar sensors installed in two light passenger cars (LPC-I and LPC-II), one small passenger car (SPC), and one minivan (MNV). The LPC-I, SPC, and MNV were equipped with center and corner sensors, whereas the LPC-I

Flexible Pressure Sensor With Multi-Stage Microdome Structure Enabling Ultra-Wide Linear Range and High Sensitivity for Wearable Applications.

Flexible piezoresistive sensors show significant application potential in wearable health monitoring, motion recognition, and human-machine interaction. However, current sensors often face a trade-off between insufficient sensitivity and rapid saturation at high pressures, making it difficult to simultaneously achieve both high sensitivity and a wide pressure detection range. Herein, we propose an MXene-based flexible piezoresistive sensor with a multi-stage microdome (MSM) structure, enabling high sensitivity and a broad response range. Benefitting from the multi-stage compression and stepwis

Experimental and numerical investigation on micro-motion characteristics of lightweight spacecraft.

Accurate prediction of micro-motion characteristics is essential to the success of space mission operations. In this paper, the lightweight spacecraft is selected as the research object. Firstly, the micro-motion characteristic test device is designed to carry out the micro-motion experiment, and the micro-motion characteristic of the test device is numerically simulated to verify the accuracy of the model compared with test data. On this basis, the angular velocity interferences of different values and different directions are simulated, and it is verified that the transversal initial interfe

Helical static-mixer insert for pediatric and neonatal gas blending: RANS-CFD comparison of commercial and in-house monolithic designs.

Accurate blending of oxygen and air in pediatric and neonatal respiratory support depends on compact connectors that promote efficient mixing without generating excessive pressure drop or dead volume. In current clinical practice, commercially available T-shaped connectors are often used as passive mixers, but their internal geometry was not originally optimized for this purpose. In this work, the original commercial connector (Geometry A), an in-house modified multi-part connector incorporating a static insert (Geometry B), and a new monolithic helical static-mixer insert (Geometry C) were ev

[Design of a dedicated connecting tube for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal therapy].

Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) is a type of extracorporeal circulation technology. It generally refers to a technique that mimics the modality of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO), aiming to eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood and correct hypercapnia with a relatively low blood flow. The removal efficacy of ECCO2R depends on blood flow, gas flow rate, membrane lung surface area, and the partial pressure gradient of carbon dioxide (PCO2) across the membrane. Currently, the surface area of gas exchangers used in clinical practice is generally less than
