Relationship between Packed Red Blood Cell Transfusion and Severe Form of Necrotizing Enterocolitis: A Case Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if packed red blood cell transfusion is associated with onset of necrotizing enterocolitis, and whether withholding feed has any association with it. METHODS: Case records of 100 preterm neonates, (<34 weeks gestation) who developed necrotizing enterocolitis and 99 random age-and gestation-matched controls were evaluated for any blood transfusion 48 h before onset of necrotizing enterocolitis. RESULTS: During the study period 26% infants received packed red blood cell transfusion within 48-hours prior to onset of disease and 84% of these infants were not fed around th

Efficacy of neonatal release of ankyloglossia: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia has been associated with a variety of infant-feeding problems. Frenotomy commonly is performed for relief of ankyloglossia, but there has been a lack of convincing data to support this practice. OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to determine whether frenotomy for infants with ankyloglossia improved maternal nipple pain and ability to breastfeed. A secondary objective was to determine whether frenotomy improved the length of breastfeeding. METHODS: Over a 12-month period, neonates who had difficulty breastfeeding and significant ankyloglossia were enrolled in thi

Effects of an oral contraceptive (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol) on bone mineral density in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of an oral contraceptive (OC) on bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa (AN) or eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). METHODS: Females 11-17 years of age with AN or EDNOS entered the study. Subjects were randomized equally to treatment with a triphasic OC containing norgestimate (NGM) 180-250 microg and ethinyl estradiol (EE) 35 microg or placebo for 13 28-day cycles. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scans (DXA) of the lumbosacral spine (LS) and hip were obtained at baseline and after 6 and 13 cycles. RESULTS: Demogra

[Evaluation of early manifestations of chronic no transmitted diseases risk in school population in Cali - Colombia].

Similar to other countries in America, Colombia and the Department of Valle present changes in their population structure and mortality suggesting an advanced epidemiological transition status. Grouped, chronic diseases represent the principal cause of death in municipalities with high urban concentration. To identify associated factors of chronic conditions later in life, school children stratified by age, socio-economic level and gender were studied. By random sampling of 14 schools 2.807 children were examined to measure: anthropometry, work capacity, food intake, sexual maturation, blood p

Sex differences in iron status during infancy.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that there is no difference in iron status between male and female infants, despite a lack of studies addressing this question. OBJECTIVE: To study sex differences in different measures of iron status in infants. METHODS: At 4 months of age, 263 term, breastfed infants (121 Swedish and 142 Honduran) were randomized to receive iron supplements or placebo until 9 months of age. Blood samples at 4, 6, and 9 months of age were analyzed for hemoglobin (Hb), mean cell volume (MCV), zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP), plasma ferritin, and transferrin receptors (TfR). RESU

VMN hypothalamic dopamine and serotonin in anorectic septic rats.

During sepsis, catabolism of proteins and associated changes in plasma amino acids occur. Tryptophan and tyrosine, and their derivatives serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA), influence hypothalamic feeding-related areas and are associated with the onset of anorexia. We hypothesized that anorexia of sepsis is associated with changes in serotonin and dopamine in the ventromedial nucleus (VMN) of the hypothalamus. The aim of this study was to test our hypothesis by measuring intra-VMN changes of these two neurotransmitters at the onset of anorexia during sepsis. Fischer 344 male rats had an intrace

High dose vitamin A supplementation of breast-feeding Indonesian mothers: effects on the vitamin A status of mother and infant.

For regions where vitamin A deficiency is common, high dose vitamin A supplementation of lactating mothers is currently recommended, but the effects of this intervention have not been carefully evaluated. We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial in which 153 Indonesian mothers 1-3 wk postpartum received either a capsule containing 312 mumol of vitamin A as retinyl palmitate or a placebo. Mothers' serum retinol concentrations in the vitamin A group tended to be lower than in the placebo group at baseline but higher at 3 mo postpartum (1.39 vs. 1.24 mumol/L, P = 0.03) and 6 mo postpartum (1

Optimizing Feeding Practices Improves Outcomes During Early Childhood in Former Small for Gestational Age (SGA) Infants.

Background: Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of altered postnatal growth and early metabolic vulnerability. Early feeding practices may modulate these outcomes, but evidence from Eastern Europe remains limited. Objective: To evaluate the influence of birth weight and early nutrition on anthropometric outcomes at 2-3 years of age in former SGA infants in Romania, and to examine associations with allergies, respiratory infections, and food intolerances. Methods: We conducted a retrospective comparative study including two cohorts of term SGA infants born in a Ro

Congenital heart disease prolongs the time to full enteral feeding in neonates with abdominal operation: a dual-center, propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) may cause intestinal hypoperfusion and feeding intolerance. The aim of this study was to assess whether CHD prolongs the time to achieve full enteral feeding in neonates underwent abdominal surgery. METHODS: This was a dual-center retrospective study. Neonates who underwent abdominal surgery were subdivided into two groups: those with CHD and those without. The primary outcome was the time to achieve full enteral feeding after abdominal surgery. Propensity score matching (ratio of 1:2) was performed to balance covariates. Cox regression analysis was

Investigating midwives and nurses reporting of 'infant feeding at hospital discharge': an online survey across NSW Australia.

BACKGROUND: The collection of data on 'infant feeding at hospital discharge' is used to monitor breastfeeding outcomes, health service benchmarking, and research. While some Australian states have clear definitions of this data collection point, there is no operational definition of 'infant feeding at hospital discharge' in the Australian state of New South Wales. Little is known about how midwives interpret the term 'infant feeding at hospital discharge', in particular, the timeframe used to calculate these important indicators. The purpose of this study was to explore midwives' and nurses' p

Nutritional Support for Moderate-to-Late-Preterm Infants - A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Most moderate-to-late-preterm infants need nutritional support until they are feeding exclusively on their mother's breast milk. Evidence to guide nutrition strategies for these infants is lacking. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, factorial, randomized trial involving infants born at 32 weeks 0 days' to 35 weeks 6 days' gestation who had intravenous access and whose mothers intended to breast-feed. Each infant was assigned to three interventions or their comparators: intravenous amino acid solution (parenteral nutrition) or dextrose solution until full feeding with milk was es

Glycemic Control During Enteral Tube Feeding in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction Achieving good glycemic control during enteral tube feeding in patients with diabetes mellitus can be difficult. National guidelines emphasize the need for the early involvement of the dietitian and diabetes specialist nurse, regular capillary blood glucose (CBG) monitoring, and the avoidance of hypoglycemic events. We aimed to assess glycemic control in patients with diabetes during enteral tube feeding. Materials and methods A retrospective study, involving patients with diabetes who had enteral tube feeding during their hospital stay from January to December 2016, was performed

Is nutritional support needed in late preterm infants?

BACKGROUND: Late preterm birth accounts for 70 % of all preterm births. While the impact of feeding problems in very preterm infants has been widely investigated, data on late preterm infants' feeding issues are scarce. The aim of the present study was to investigate the need of nutritional support during hospital stay in a cohort of late preterm infants and to identify the factors that most contribute to its occurrence. METHODS: We analyzed the medical records of late preterm infants, born 2011-2013, admitted to a single institution. Neonatal data, the need for nutritional support, defined a

Understanding West Nile virus ecology in Europe: Culex pipiens host feeding preference in a hotspot of virus emergence.

BACKGROUND: Understanding wildlife disease ecology is becoming an urgent need due to the continuous emergence and spread of several wildlife zoonotic diseases. West Nile Virus (WNV) is the most widespread arthropod-borne virus in the world, and in recent decades there has been an increase both in geographic range, and in the frequency of symptomatic infections in humans and wildlife. The principal vector for WNV in Europe is the common house Culex pipiens mosquito, which feeds on a wide variety of vertebrate host species. Variation in mosquito feeding preference has been described as one of th

Early versus on-demand nasoenteric tube feeding in acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Early enteral feeding through a nasoenteric feeding tube is often used in patients with severe acute pancreatitis to prevent gut-derived infections, but evidence to support this strategy is limited. We conducted a multicenter, randomized trial comparing early nasoenteric tube feeding with an oral diet at 72 hours after presentation to the emergency department in patients with acute pancreatitis. METHODS: We enrolled patients with acute pancreatitis who were at high risk for complications on the basis of an Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score of 8 or higher (on

Association of human milk feedings with a reduction in retinopathy of prematurity among very low birthweight infants.

INTRODUCTION: With the increased survival of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, weighing less than 1500 g at birth, the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a significant cause of blindness among children in the United States, is also increasing. Preterm infants with a positive diagnosis of ROP during the perinatal period are at increased risk for ocular abnormalities and for deficits in visual function during later periods of development. Human milk has many antioxidant constituents including inositol, vitamin E, and beta-carotene that may protect against the development of ROP.

Feasibility and safety of a modified volume-based feeding protocol in critically ill children: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Enteral nutrition interruptions (ENIs) are common in critically ill children and may cause underfeeding. Volume-based feeding practices (VBFPs) mitigate ENIs, but their use has not been reported in pediatric critical care. We analyzed whether a modified VBFP (MVBFP), based on compensatory feeding over the subsequent 24 h, is feasible and safe. METHODS: Prospective longitudinal study of critically ill children aged 1 month-18 years receiving enteral nutrition in whom an MVBFP was applied. Compensatory increased enteral feeding goal rates (CIEFGR) were defined as instances in which

Breastfeeding self-efficacy in Italian mothers: the role of attachment, parental stress, and feeding practices.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding self-efficacy, defined as a mother’s confidence in her ability to breastfeed, is a central psychological determinant of breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. Although widely studied, fewer investigations have examined breastfeeding self-efficacy within an integrated framework that simultaneously considers contextual, experiential, and psychological factors. The present study aimed to identify the main predictors of breastfeeding self-efficacy in a large sample of Italian mothers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 500 Italian mothers who were

Eating Behaviors, Appetite, and Childhood Obesity in Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study of Mothers' Perceptions and Prevention Approaches.

OBJECTIVE: In early childhood, packaged food consumption, screen-based sedentary behavior, and inconsistent parental feeding practices increase the risk of obesity. Mothers play a central role in shaping children's feeding environments. This study explored mothers' perceptions of eating and appetite behaviors in children aged 36 years, their feeding management strategies, and their evaluations of obesity risk within a cultural context. METHODS: A phenomenologically oriented qualitative design within an interpretiveconstructivist paradigm was employed. Fifteen mothers of children aged 36 years
