A 34 year-old man, who was a smoker, was hospitalised because of severe epigastric and right upper quadrant pain. An isolated left branch portal vein thrombosis was diagnosed using ultrasonography and arteriography. Two thrombogenic pathologies were found: i) a latent myeloproliferative syndrome with spontaneous presence of erythroid colony forming unit (CFU-E) in bone marrow culture, normal blood cell count, platelet count and medullogram; ii) a hyperhomocysteinemia associated with low serum folate levels and a methyl tetrahydrofolate reductase mutation. The association of these two factors p

In 90 patients with prosthetic heart valves, the presence of iron and folate deficiencies was assessed in a double-blind study. Anemia was found in 18 cases. Average serum iron levels were below the normal range and could be incremented significantly through the administration of 193 mg Fe++ daily during a 4-week period. No evidence of folate deficiency was found.

The occurrence of anemia in a group of aged persons residing in a home for the aged and in a chronic disease hospital was reviewed with regard to etiology, choice of treatment, and therapeutic response. Of the 484 patients, 151 (31 per cent) had anemia or were receiving antianemia therapy. Iron-deficiency anemia was the most common type, and iron was the most common form of treatment. Seventy-eight patients were given antianemia therapy in 97 courses, and a good therapeutic result was achieved in about one-fourth of the courses. The most frequent error in iron therapy was its use in the anemia

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common congenital malformations. Folic acid deficiency in pregnant women increases the risk of developing NTDs; however, the underlying etiology and mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, the role of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in 3D genome organization in NTDs with folate deficiency is reported. The NTD mouse model is burdened with abundant DSBs associated with the disruption of 3D genome organization. DSBs occurring in active genes lead to the stalling of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) and formation of R-loops in the 3D genome. The DSB ratios…

Strategies such as dietary diversification and food fortification have yielded significant results in controlling iron deficiency anaemia in developed countries. Reducing the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in developing countries is still a matter of importance. The major factors responsible for iron deficiency anaemia in the vulnerable segments of developing countries are reduced intake and poor bioavailability of dietary iron. Dietary diversification and food-based approaches pose considerable challenges before they can be implemented on a wide scale. Anaemia control programmes based

Anemia is a common extraintestinal manifestation in IBD patients and considerably impacts disease prognosis, hospitalization rates and time lost from work. While iron deficiency anemia is predominant, combinations of hematimetric and biochemical markers enable detection and targeted therapy of other etiologies including vitamin B12/folic acid deficiencies, hemolysis, myelosuppression and pharmacotherapies. Areas covered: Current literature was searched for articles focusing on etiology, diagnostics and therapy of anemia in IBD. In the light of their own experience, the authors describe the phy

The socio-economic implications of COVID-19 are devastating. Considerable morbidity is attributed to 'long-COVID' - an increasingly recognized complication of infection. Its diverse symptoms are reminiscent of vitamin B12 deficiency, a condition in which methylation status is compromised. We suggest why SARS-CoV-2 infection likely leads to increased methyl-group requirements and other disturbances of one-carbon metabolism. We propose these might explain the varied symptoms of long-COVID. Our suggested mechanismmight also apply to similar conditions such as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fat

Optic neuropathy occurring after GBS is often due to vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency. Copper deficiency causing systemic symptoms is very rare and usually takes decades to manifest. Our case is unique in that copper deficiency was noted as early as 3 years after GBS. Moreover rapid copper replenishment led to a dramatic recovery of …

Elevated homocyst(e)ine plasma concentrations are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hyperhomocyst(e)inaemia is common in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, carotid artery stenosis and venous thromboembolism. Endothelial dysfunction may be one underlying cause leading to proatherogenic effects associated with hyperhomocyst(e)inaemia. However, the mechanisms which lead to impaired endothelial function in hyperhomocyst(e)inaemia are not fully understood. Recent evidence suggests that homocyst(e)ine may interac

Placental insufficiency affects five to ten% of pregnancies worldwide, and folate deficiency has emerged as a key contributing factor. The molecular pathways linking folate metabolism to placental pathology remain poorly characterized. We developed a heterogeneous graph neural network framework that integrates genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data to investigate these mechanisms. Our network architecture explicitly models diverse node types and edge relationships within biological networks, addressing limitations of conventional approaches that treat molecular entities unifo

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral folate deficiency syndrome (CFDS) is a rare neurometabolic disorder with clinical features including late infantile onset refractory seizures, ataxia, movement disorder, unexplained global developmental delay, and leukoencephalopathy. It is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by low levels of the active form of folate (5- MTHF) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) caused by mutations in FOLR1 gene. This gene encodes the membrane protein folate receptor "FRα," which is a glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell membrane protein that regulates folate transport into
