The incidence of primary open angle glaucoma in patients with central retinal vein occlusion is reported to be between 5.7 and 66%, while that of primary angle closure glaucoma is from 0 to 9%. (Corrected for the relative incidence of these two types of glaucoma in the general population, these rates are comparable). There appears to be a causal relationship between elevated intraocular pressure and central retinal vein occlusion, which does not correlate with the height to which the pressure is elevated. Other etiologic factors may be important, particularly arteriosclerosis. The association

Even if bevacizumab is unlicensed, a majority of retina specialists still currently recommends it in retinal vein occlusion-related macular edema. For the first time, the results of our studies showed evidence suggesting that an early treatment administered immediately after the onset of venous occlusion, provided a significant and sustained improvement in visual acuity and foveal thickness, with inactive disease (dry retina and stable visual acuity for at least 6 months after the last injection) in most phakic patients with acute central/ hemicentral retinal vein occlusions, making this treat

Tonography is helpful in the diagnosis of doubtful cases of chronic simple glaucoma. If also gives a good indication of the status of the disease in a given eye. The most useful miotic in the treatment of glaucoma is still pilocarpine. Carbachol is more potent but must be used in an anhydrous base ointment or in a solution of a wetting agent. DFP (diisopropyl fluorophosphate) produces undesirable side effects because of the hyperreactivity of the ciliary body and iris sphincter which it causes. These can be partly overcome by using pilocarpine first. Diamox is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor th

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Imaging of the ganglion cell complex and retinal nerve fiber layer with optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-resolution means of diagnosing and quantitatively monitoring glaucoma. In the anterior segment, OCT can also be used to assess the anterior chamber angle and identify angle closure, a risk factor for glaucoma. The interpretation of OCT images for accurate diagnosis requires expert-level knowledge of both the technology and glaucoma. Deep learning (DL) is a subfield of artifici

PURPOSE: Glaucoma prevalence can vary geographically and ethnically, which suggests that a genetic element could play a significant role. Studies investigating the role of various mitochondrial haplogroups in the pathogenesis of glaucoma are scarce.
METHODS: We compared the prevalence of different mitochondrial haplogroups in 107 glaucoma patients (49 primary open-angle glaucoma, POAG; 29 primary angle-closure glaucoma, PACG; and 29 pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, PEG) and 552 maternally unrelated normal controls. All patients and controls were Saudi Arabs.
RESULTS: There was no statistically si

The authors propose to consider that the liberation of the ciliary body of Benedikt, combined or not with vitrectomy and/or with surgery of the exposed ciliary body and/or with reconstruction of the angle and/or with the treatment of secondary glaucomas with extensive goniosynechias. 30 eyes were operated according to these principles during a period of two years. They presented an angle closure glaucoma that was neglected, provoking a chronic state via the formation of a ring shaped goniosynechia (11 eyes), an aphakic secondary glaucoma (7 eyes), neo-vascular glaucoma (3 eyes), a malignant gl

With an incidence of about 1/1000, primary angle-closure glaucoma is 4 to 5 times less frequent than primary open-angle glaucoma. It occurs most frequently due to pupillary block, itself both due to anatomical configuration and to either physiological or pathological changes in the anterior chamber. Pupillary block causes an increase of pressure in the posterior chamber, which leads to anterior displacement of the iris and, finally, to angle closure. The treatment of choice - dictated by the pathogenesis - consists of diminishing the posterior chamber pressure by means of hyperosmotic agents s
