OBJECTIVES: To determine frequency and clinical criteria associated to the inadequate indication of blood products.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed between June and October 2002. Clinical charts and the laboratory tests from patients receiving blood transfusions were examined. A blood transfusion guideline was elaborated based on published consensus, and used to determine whether the indications for blood products transfusion was adequate or inadequate.

A successful transurethral resection of the prostate was performed without complication in a 66-year-old man who presented with acute urinary retention, anemia, leukemia and thrombocytopenia. Preoperative treatment with red cell and platelet transfusions, HLA typing for white cell transfusions and preventative antibiotics made surgical treatment successful. With continued improvement in therapy for hematologic tumors and the improvement in survival, catheter drainage with its concomitant chance for sepsis is not a viable alternative to surgical therapy for prostatism.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In three cases of platelet alloimmunisation, a platelet-specific alloantibody was detected which could not be classified within the known human platelet alloantigen or HLA systems. The first case was of a family in which two siblings suffered neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia at birth. In the second case, the newborn was suffering from phocomelia with hypoplastic thrombocytopenia. The problem of intraoperative thrombocyte transfusion in splenectomy of patients with ITP is discussed. The indication for splenectomy cannot be equalized with that for intra-operative platelet substitution.
