BACKGROUND: Panuveitis and chorioretinitis in infants with Langerhans cell histiocytosis are rare and fundus photographic documentation is lacking in the literature.
METHODS: Case report with fundus photography.
RESULTS: The authors report a case of an infant with disseminated Langerhans cell histiocytosis who presented with panuveitis in the right eye and chorioretinitis in left eye. Treatment with chemotherapy led to resolution of chorioretinal lesions; however, the visual prognosis remained guarded because of the macular involvement and amblyopia.

The fundi of the 527 infants born within one week were investigated. The results showed that 54 cases (78 eyes) had retinal hemorrhage. Among them, 23 cases (28 eyes) accompanied macular hemorrhage. The retinal hemorrhage in newborn infants was higher in vaginal delivery than in cesarean section, and the incidence of the fetal distress was higher in the newborn infants with macular hemorrhage. The essential causes of the retinal hemorrhage in newborn infants, development of infant macular and the mechanism of amblyopia induced by macular hemorrhage were discussed.

From a study of 195 unselected cases of idiopathic squint, the authors distinguish three types of squint (simple, accommodative, and with amblyopia). Both sexes are equally affected, the age of onset is later in accommodative squint than in the other two types. Characteristic visual symptoms and signs in 12 patients with neoplasms or aneurysms involving the optic tract are summarized. Blurred vision was the most common initial manifestation. Optic atrophy became apparent in 7 of the 12 patients. Most patients had uniocular central scotomas with reduced visual acuity, and 2 had homonymous scotomas. Field defects were frequently incomplete and incongruous, combining central scotomas with elements of homonymous and bitemporal amblyopias. Seven patients had endocrine disturbances and memory deficits in addition to their visual symptoms.

Paralyses of accommodation are safely diagnosticizable even in patients over 45 years of age provided there is no complete presbyopia. We report a 10-year-old girl with Bardet-Biedl syndrome caused by a novel mutation in the Bardet-Biedl syndrome 10 (BBS10) gene. She had multiple malformations, including a dysmorphic face, postaxial polydactyly, polycystic kidney and amblyopia. She presented with typical BBS features, including intellectual disability with emotional outbursts and mild obesity. Whole-exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous mutations with NM_024685.3:c.1677C>A [p.(Tyr559*)] and c.1974T>G [p.(Tyr658*)]. To our knowledge, the latter mutation has never been reported previously.

In 61 of 300 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, disease onset was retrobulbar optical neuritis.
