Why are critical event checklists not always used in the perioperative setting?: A retrospective survey.

INTRODUCTION: During surgery and anesthesia, life-threatening critical events, including cardiac arrest, may occur. By facilitating recall of key management steps, suggesting diagnostic possibilities, and providing dose and drug information, cognitive aids may improve clinician performance during such events. In actual clinical practice, however, cognitive aids may be available but inconsistently used. One possibility explaining aid non-use during critical events is a lack of familiarity with how cognitive aids may be helpful. We hypothesized that introduction of critical event cognitive aids

Cinemotion, a Program of Cognitive Remediation to Improve the Recognition and Expression of Facial Emotions in Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognition, especially in the recognition and expression of facial emotions, aspects of communication profoundly interlinked in an embodied approach of cognition. Nevertheless, many training programs have been developed that focus on either of these deficits but not both. We therefore designed a training program, Cinemotion, intended to remedy the 2 deficits and investigated its feasibility and effects in patients with schizophrenia. Design: Thirty-one patients undergoing treatment for schizophrenia and presenting deficit in emotion

Revised associative inference paradigm confirms relational memory impairment in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia have widespread cognitive impairments, with selective deficits in relational memory. We previously reported a differential relational memory deficit in schizophrenia using the Associative Inference Paradigm (AIP), a task suggested by the Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (CNTRICS) initiative to examine relational memory. However, the AIP had limited feasibility for testing in schizophrenia because of high attrition of schizophrenia patients during training. Here we developed and tested a revised version of the

Insights into hallucinations in schizophrenia: novel treatment approaches.

Novel strategies are needed in the treatment of hallucinations as a subgroup of patients with pathological hallucinations (>30%) do not respond to antipsychotics or are not compliant with medication. We review recently developed biological and cognitive treatments. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation concerns neuromodulation targeted at aberrant activity in regions shown to be hyperactive in neuroimaging studies. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has been shown to reduce auditory hallucinations in several studies. However, not all studies have confirmed such effects, and a

Cognitive-behavioral treatment of health-impairing food phobias in children.

Three cases reports describe assessment and treatment of three boys (ages 6 to 8 years) hospitalized because of weight loss and malnutrition, caused by severe dietary restriction and/or refusal to eat solid food. Psychological, behavioral, and medical assessments indicated that the boys were of average intelligence, without other significant psychological or medical disorders. Their eating disturbances were conceptualized as phobic disorders maintained by family factors reinforcing the children's avoidant behaviors. Cognitive-behavioral treatment consisted of an individualized combination of c

Beneficial effects of a multidomain cognitive rehabilitation program for traumatic brain injury-associated diffuse axonal injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological rehabilitation is a crucial component of medical care for patients with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). However, current cognitive intervention programs directed to favor the training of specific domains individually have shown controversial results. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of a neuropsychological rehabilitation program directed to favor training of attention, memory, visuospatial abilities, and executive functioning together in a patient with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated DAI. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old Hispanic woman with a rec

Enhanced brain functional connectivity and activation after 12-week Tai Chi-based action observation training in patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Motor-cognitive interactive interventions, such as action observation training (AOT), have shown great potential in restoring cognitive function and motor behaviors. It is expected that an advanced AOT incorporating specific Tai Chi movements with continuous and spiral characteristics can facilitate the shift from automatic to intentional actions and thus enhance motor control ability for early-stage PD. Nonetheless, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. The study aimed to investigate changes in brain functional connectivity (FC) and clinical improvement after 12 weeks

Multimodal exercise training in multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled trial in persons with substantial mobility disability.

BACKGROUND: Mobility disability is a common, debilitating feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Exercise training has been identified as an approach to improve MS-related mobility disability. However, exercise randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on mobility in MS have generally not selectively targeted those with the onset of irreversible mobility disability. OBJECTIVES: The current multi-site RCT compared the efficacy of 6-months of supervised, multimodal exercise training with an active control condition for improving mobility, gait, physical fitness, and cognitive outcomes in persons with su

Transcranial electric stimulation and neurocognitive training in clinically depressed patients: a pilot study of the effects on rumination.

Rumination is a cognitive-affective thinking style that plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of depression. Recently, it was shown that clinically depressed patients who received a neurocognitive training - involving two weeks of repetitive cognitive control exercises that necessitate prefrontal engagement - are more able to control over ruminative negative thoughts than patients who only received treatment as usual. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a biological technique that can directly modulate prefrontal excitability via the manipulation of neural membrane potent…

Task-related training improves performance of seated reaching tasks after stroke. A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After stroke, the ability to balance in sitting is critical to independence. Although impairments in sitting balance are common, little is known about the effectiveness of rehabilitation strategies designed to improve it. The purpose of this randomized placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the effect of a 2-week task-related training program aimed at increasing distance reached and the contribution of the affected lower leg to support and balance. METHODS: Twenty subjects at least 1 year after stroke were randomized into an experimental or control group. The experim

Comparison of the Influence of Dual-Task Activities on Prefrontal Activation and Gait Variables in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment during Straight and Curved Walking.

Background and Objectives: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an early stage of dementia in which everyday tasks can be maintained; however, notable challenges may occur in memory, focus, and problem-solving skills. Therefore, motor-cognitive dual-task training is warranted to prevent cognitive decline and improve cognition in aging populations. This study aimed to determine the influence of such dual-task activities during straight and curved walking on the activities of the prefrontal cortex and associated gait variables in older adults with MCI. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven older adu

The fog of war: decrements in cognitive performance and mood associated with combat-like stress.

INTRODUCTION: Anecdotal reports from military conflicts suggest cognitive performance and mood are severely degraded by the stress of combat. However, little objective information is available to confirm these observations. METHODS: Our laboratory had several unique opportunities to study cognitive function in warfighters engaged in exercises designed to simulate the stress of combat. These studies were conducted in different environments with two different types of military volunteers. In one study, subjects were officers, with an average 9 yr of military service, who were members of an elit

Factors associated with driving simulator performance in vocational drivers with HIV.

Neurocognitive symptoms persist in many people living with HIV (PLWH). Safe driving practices are dependent on intact cognition. Research in the general driving population suggests that PLWH with neurocognitive impairment (NCI) perform worse on driving assessment tasks than cognitively intact PLWH. We explored the relationship between HIV status, NCI, and driving ability in vocational drivers. Two-hundred-and-four male drivers [68 drivers with HIV] completed neuropsychological testing and two driving simulator tasks assessing driving under routine and challenging circumstances. Drivers with NC
