Dengue is a product of the environment: an approach to the impacts of the environment on the Aedes aegypti mosquito and disease cases.

Dengue is an arbovirus infection whose etiologic agent is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Since the early 1980s, when the circulation of the dengue virus (DENV) was confirmed in Brazil, the disease has become a growing multifactorial public health problem. This article presented the main factors that have contributed to the frequent dengue epidemics in recent years, such as the behavior of the vector, climate change, and social, political, and economic aspects. The intersection between these different factors in the dynamics of the disease is highlighted, including the increase in t

Epidemics and trust: The case of the Spanish Flu.

Recent studies argue that major crises can have long-lasting effects on individual behavior. While most studies focused on natural disasters, we explore the consequences of the global pandemic caused by a lethal influenza virus in 1918-19: the so-called "Spanish Flu." This was by far the worst pandemic of modern history, causing up to 100 million deaths worldwide. Using information about attitudes of respondents to the General Social Survey, we find evidence that experiencing the pandemic likely had permanent consequences in terms of individuals' social trust. Our findings suggest that lower s

Child Sexual Abuse and Its Relationship With Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents and Young Adults in Taipei.

This study explores the association of child sexual abuse (CSA) with subsequent health risk behaviors among a cross-section of 4354 adolescents and young adults surveyed in urban and rural Taipei. Descriptive analysis and logistic regressions were employed. The overall proportion of CSA was 5.15%, with more females (6.14%) than males (4.16%) likely to experience CSA. CSA was differently associated with multiple adverse health outcomes, after adjusting other factors, such as age, residence, economic status, education, employment status, and household instability. Both males and females with CSA

Fibromyalgia comorbid with anxiety disorders and depression: combined medical and psychological treatment.

Fibromyalgia is associated with high level of pain and suffering. Lack of diagnosis leads to onerous indirect economic costs. Recent data indicate that fibromyalgia; anxiety disorders, and depression tend to occur as comorbid conditions. They also share some common neurochemical dysfunctions and central nervous system alterations such as hypofunctional serotonergic system and altered reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Conversely, functional neuroimaging findings point to different patterns of altered pain processing mechanisms between fibromyalgia and depression. There is n

[The impact of the cognitive impairment].

Cognitive impairment has a significant medical, social and economic impact. In the aging population there is an increase in the incidence of age-related, chronic, not transmissible pathologies. Among them, an outstanding place is occupied by entities that affect the brain and cause cognitive and behavioral disorders. Neurodegeneration, the main cause of these disorders, is an intrinsic neuronal process ensued from different interacting mechanisms that alter cellular structure and function. As a result, the physiopathologic process of cognitive impairment is partially known, with the consequent

Reactions to counterstereotypic behavior: the role of backlash in cultural stereotype maintenance.

Social and economic sanctions for counterstereotypical behavior have been termed the backlash effect. The authors present a model of the role of backlash in cultural stereotype maintenance from the standpoint of both perceivers and actors. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants lost a competition to either atypical or typical men or women and subsequently showed greater tendency to sabotage deviants. Moreover, undermining deviants was associated with increased self-esteem, suggesting that backlash rewards perceivers psychologically. Experiment 3 showed that gender deviants who feared backlash re

Endemic treponematoses in the Sudan.

Sudan is surrounded by eight countries and has marked movement of population across its borders. At one time yaws and syphilis were important public health problems in the Sudan. Following the wide use of penicillin, both diseases were much reduced in prevalence and were no longer public health problems. However, the extensive population movement and particularly the huge influx of refugees across the border pose important potential hazards. The rapid urbanization and the social and cultural changes that followed economic development affected family ties and community behavior and resulted in

Socioeconomic and behavioural factors that contribute to the co-occurrence of risk factors for noncommunicable diseases.

It is observed that the global burden of diseases had shifted from infectious diseases to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), with an accumulative trend in developing countries. NCDs share key modifiable behavioral risk factors like unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity that are typically established during adolescence or young adulthood and will set the stage for NCDs development later in life. Therefore, this paper aimed to explore factors contributing to the co-occurrence of risk factors for NCDs among persons aged 30 years and above in selected urban areas of Namibia. Specifically, th

Facilitators and barriers of implementing sin-tax policies: a scoping review.

Sin taxes, or public health taxes, are excise taxes levied on goods that can harm health. These taxes aim to influence consumer behavior, enhance health outcomes, and generate revenue for health systems. While the effectiveness of sin taxes in influencing consumer behavior has been widely studied, there is limited synthesis of the barriers and facilitators to their implementation. This study specifically reviews these barriers and facilitators, providing insights into the successful sin-tax policy implementation. This study specifically reviews the barriers and facilitators to the implementati

Economic costs of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis and healthcare utilization patterns post animal bites: An experience from a private healthcare facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies remains a public health challenge in many parts of the world, particularly in countries like India, where it is responsible for a significant number of human fatalities. Despite being a preventable disease, rabies continues to exert a heavy toll on the population, largely due to delays in seeking post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and the economic burden associated with treatment. OBJECTIVE: 1. To address this gap by assessing the economic costs of rabies PEP and healthcare utilization patterns among individuals treated at a private healthcare facility in Bhubaneswar 2. To a

Outdoor air pollution pregnancy exposures are associated with behavioral problems in China's preschoolers.

There are mounting evidences indicated that maternal exposure to outdoor air pollutants in pregnancy affects children's neural development, but the researches on children's behavioral difficulties are seldom. We explored the association between maternal exposure to outdoor air pollution during different trimesters of pregnancy and the prevalence of behavioral difficulties among 657 preschool children aged 3-4 from three kindergartens in Wuhan, China. This is a cross-sectional study. Children's behavioral difficulties were assessed by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (reported
