Scalable Nanoedge Interfaces for Robust Intracellular Electrophysiology in Cardiomyocytes.

Electrophysiology, as a functional feature of cardiomyocytes, is crucial to cardiac disease research. Over the decades, new strategies for electrophysiological recordings have led to notable advances in studying the electrogenic cells and their networks. Although advanced three-dimensional micro/nanodevices achieve reliable intracellular recordings, the manufacture of low-cost devices, such as planar ones, remains a challenge. Hence, we develop a cost-effective nanoedge-enhanced electroporation (NEEE) device to achieve high-quality intracellular recordings. The NEEE device is compatible with l

Tailoring silicone mixtures for soft robotics: predictive modeling and experimental validation in pneumatic soft actuators.

The development of soft robotics hinges on the ability to tailor material properties to meet specific application requirements. This study investigates the mechanical behavior of silicone mixtures and their application in pneumatic soft actuators. A comprehensive experimental methodology was used to evaluate 15 silicone combinations, focusing on Young's modulus, fracture stress, and fracture strain. Through an ordinary least squares regression analysis of the resulting Young's Moduli, we identified key predictors and interactions that govern material properties, achieving anR2value of 0.932 an

Delivered Oxygen Concentrations of Two Nonrebreather Reservoir Masks.

BACKGROUND: High-concentration nonrebreathing reservoir masks are frequently used for patients with hypoxemia but vary in shape, affecting mask fit. Mask fit affects the ability to inhale gas from the reservoir bag during inspiration and therefore makes it difficult to ensure a reliable concentration of oxygen delivered consistently to the patient. The EcoLite reservoir mask (EcoLite, Intersurgical, United Kingdom) reports a more consistent oxygen concentration delivery based on mask fit when compared with other products. METHODS: A bench study was conducted comparing the consistency of high

CFD-driven optimization and experimental validation of venturi-based thrombectomy devices in a circle of willis.

The geometry of the Circle of Willis poses major challenges for mechanical thrombectomy, where device navigability and effective thrombus removal determine treatment success. This study investigated the performance of venturi-inspired aspiration thrombectomy devices in a simplified cerebral artery segment representative of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), a frequent site of occlusion. Five designs (30°, 45°, 60° venturi, 7/11° taper, and cylindrical control) were assessed using a combined computational-experimental framework. On the computational side, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes

Evaluating the additive properties of differential pressure valves in a novel benchtop shunt model.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) over-drainage is an unintended sequela of using a shunt valve to treat hydrocephalus, and a second valve may be added in series to better control drainage. In this study, we tested whether the opening pressures of two valves in series-Codman Hakim ball valve (HBV) and the Miethke M.blueⓇ adjustable gravitational valve (AGV)-can be treated as being additive using a novel in vitro benchtop model. METHODS: Six dual-valve circuits were tested in triplicates for different combinations of HBV and AGV settings adding up to a summed opening pressure (OP) of either

Optimized Tri-Coil Magnetic Guidance of Nanorobots for Targeted Plaque Therapy in the Middle Cerebral Artery.

Intravascular nanorobotic interventions in the neurovasculature are a promising yet challenging frontier in medical technology. This study addresses the challenge of precise control over nanorobots within the Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA), particularly under conditions of significant stenosis (80.1%) that complicate flow and navigation. Despite advances in magnetically actuated nanorobots for targeted therapies, achieving fine-grained control in complex vascular environments remains a critical issue. To address this, we propose a novel tri-coil electromagnetic system that uses three independent

Reconfiguration planning and structure parameter design of a reconfigurable cable-driven lower limb rehabilitation robot.

Reconfigurable cable-driven parallel robots (RCDPRs) have attracted much attention as a novel type of cable-driven robot that can change their cable anchor position. The reconfigurable cable-driven lower limb rehabilitation robot (RCDLR) employs RCDPRs in lower limb rehabilitation to achieve multiple training modes. This paper investigates the reconfiguration planning and structural parameter design of the RCDLR. The RCDLR aims to fulfill the requirements of early passive rehabilitation training. Therefore, motion capture data are analyzed and mapped to the target trajectory of the RCDLR. Thro

Design, Modeling, and Control of a Soft Abdominal Compression Robot for Respiratory Assistance.

Respiratory assistance is commonly used to treat respiratory system diseases or support postoperative recovery, playing a crucial role in patient rehabilitation. However, existing respiratory assistance devices rely on rigid systems, which may pose risks to the human body. To address this, we propose a novel soft abdominal compression robot for respiratory assistance (SACR-RA), which offers personalized and adaptive support. This novel ability is achieved by dynamically adjusting the pressure applied to the abdomen in real-time on the basis of the user's respiratory characteristics. First, we

Helical neural implants for intracerebral drug delivery.

Objective.Neurological disorders often arise from specific regions of dysfunction in the brain. One approach to target these pathologic regions is through chemical delivery using intracerebral implants. Previous works have designed implants that are small and flexible, minimizing the mechanical mismatch between inorganic implants and soft organic brain tissue. Most of these implants are simple cylindrical catheters with inflow and outflow ports at either end of the cylinder. This limits the region and volume of tissue that can be dosed. We sought to develop novel catheter designs that permit t

A plug-and-play microfluidic device for hydrogel fiber spinning.

Hydrogel fibers are promising biomaterials for a broad range of biomedical applications, including biosensing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. Different types of microfluidic devices have been developed for hydrogel fiber spinning, however, they often require skillful fabrication procedures with special instruments such as 3D printers and clean-room facilities. On the other hand, microfluidic devices with predetermined and fixed configurations are susceptible to clotting, contamination, and damage, thereby creating a significant barrier for potential users. Herein, we describe a plug-an

[Development of Non-Invasive Bi-Level Breathing Therapy System].

At present, there is no effective drug treatment for obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). It is usually treated by mechanical ventilation through a ventilator. In this paper, a non-invasive bi-level breathing therapy system suitable for home scenarios is developed. The system supports single-level and bi-level positive airway pressure therapies, and introduces the function of inspiratory synchronous trigger based on flow monitoring to enhance the synchrony of patient-ventilator synchronization. The test results show that the performance indicators of the system meet expectations.

Securing the Puncture Depth via an Endodontic Stopper in Arthrocentesis of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Technical Note.

The reported complications after arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint are rare, which makes it to an outpatient and safe oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure. A penetration into the middle cranial fossa is an extremely rare but serious complication for the conventional needle arthrocentesis. The simple technical modification described herein could help to easily retain the puncture depth via an endodontic silicone stopper to avoid this rare complication.
