OBJECTIVES: In this article, we present the use of the superior labial artery musculo-mucosal (SLAMM) flap for intraoral reconstruction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included five patients (2 females, 3 males; mean age 36 years; range 11 to 56 years) who consulted at our clinic between October 2008 and January 2010. In this article, we describe a patient with Pai syndrome. This infant was born with an unusual median cleft of the upper lip, a pedunculated cutaneous mass that protruded from the right nostril, double frenulum of the upper lip, and median alveolar cleft. MRI showed a midline corpus callosal lipoma. Mental development was normal and chromosomal analysis revealed a normal male 46, XY karyotype.

Satisfactory reconstruction of the cheek involving the oral commissure is always challenging. A 64-year-old male patient underwent full-thickness repair of a cheek defect involving the oral commissure following excision of squamous cell carcinoma. Reconstruction was performed with a cheek skin flap combined with split masseter muscle transposition. This method was found to be useful for reconstructing the oral commissure with good functional and aesthetic results.

Extension of lip cancer to the mental nerve and perineural spread was found in four patients. The main complaint in all cases was sensory disturbance which preceded the diagnosis of recurrence by perineural spread as well as widening of the mandibular canal.
