Chromogranin A (CGA) is a member of a family of highly acidic proteins co-stored and co-released with catecholamines in the adrenal medullary cells as well as in other neurons and paraneurons. The nucleotide sequence encoding equine CGA was determined using RT-PCR and rapid amplification of complementary DNA (cDNA) ends (RACE) techniques. A total 1,828 bp of the nucleotide sequence reveals that equine CGA is a 448-residue protein preceded by an 18-residue signal peptide. Comparison of the amino acid sequence of equine CGA with those of human, porcine, bovine, mouse, rat and frog CGA showed hig

BACKGROUND: Open injuries to the face involving the external carotid artery are uncommon. These injuries are normally associated with laceration of the facial nerve because this nerve is more superficial than the external carotid artery. Hence, external carotid artery lesions are usually associated with facial nerve dysfunction. We present an unusual case report in which the patient had an injury to this artery with no facial nerve compromise.

Overgrowth syndromes are rare genetic disorders arising from alterations in the growth factors pathway. These syndromes can present as generalized overgrowth, characterized by macrosomia and excessive height compared to peers, or partial overgrowth syndromes, where specific body regions exhibit disproportionate growth often accompanied by vascular anomalies. Both forms are associated with an increased risk of tumor development. The fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF-1) intracellular binding protein (FIBP) gene plays a critical role in cell proliferation and differentiation by interacting with gro

When treating cancer patients with radiation therapy, the normal tissue in an organ close to the tumour usually receives some dose of radiation. The dose is not of the same intensity throughout the organ. This radiation can cause normal tissue complications, so for treatment planning purposes, it is important to understand the relationship between the distribution of dose intensities in the organ and the occurrence of complications. One general summary measure of the dose effect is obtained by integrating a weighting function (w(d)) over the dose distribution. The weighting function w(d) shoul

Sequence variations in the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latent membrane protein 1 gene have been described in numerous EBV-associated tumors with some of these variations, most notably a 30-base pair deletion in the cytoplasmic carboxyl-terminal domain, suggested as associated with an increase in tumorigenicity. In this study, EBV DNA sequence was determined from 92 tissue specimens or cell lines, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, oral hairy leukoplakia, post-transplant lymphoma, post-transplant without pathology, mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, parotid tumor, and normal from distinct geograp

First bite syndrome (FBS) has recently been recognized in published medical studies; however, only 2 cases have been reported in dental studies. The syndrome was defined by Netterville and Civantos and Netterville et al as originating from a postoperative complication after parapharyngeal space (PPS) surgery. The most frequent reason for PPS surgery is the presence of a deep lobe parotid gland (PG) neoplasm, with cervical schwannoma the second most common lesion mandating surgery in this space. Surgical therapeutic procedures in the PPS for these tumors can inadvertently ablate the sympathetic

We cloned a rat gene that is expressed primarily in the sublingual gland and named the predicted 503 amino-acid protein SLAMP (sublingual acinar membrane protein). SLAMP has 63% homology with human ERGIC-53-like protein, a member of the family of animal L-type lectins. Using a cDNA probe for SLAMP mRNA and rabbit antisera against SLAMP, we examined the expression and localization of SLAMP in major rat organs and tissues. With both Northern and Western blot analyses, abundant expression of SLAMP was demonstrated predominantly in the sublingual gland, with single sizes of the mRNA and protein 1.

INTRODUCTION: Adjuvant radiotherapy is an established component in the management of metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) involving the parotid gland. Radiotherapy technique, dose and volumes are seldom described sufficiently to allow close examination. We report our treatment outcomes and focus on treatment-related factors that affect outcomes in this cohort.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients with metastatic cutaneous SCCs who underwent parotidectomy with or without ipsilateral neck dissection. All patients received adjuvant radiotherapy. Demographics, cl

Numerous algorithms are available for segmenting medical images. Empirical discrepancy metrics are commonly used in measuring the similarity or difference between segmentations by algorithms and "true" segmentations. However, one issue with the commonly used metrics is that the same metric value often represents different levels of "clinical acceptability" for different objects depending on their size, shape, and complexity of form. An ideal segmentation evaluation metric should be able to reflect degrees of acceptability directly from metric values and be able to show the same acceptability m

Possible mechanisms of primary fluid formation by macropodine parotid glands were investigated in anaesthetized red kangaroos using ion transport inhibitors. Carotid plasma amiloride concentrations of 0.05-0.5 mmol.l-1 progressively reduced a stable acetylcholine-evoked half-maximal flow rate of 2.0 +/- 0.04 to 0.22 +/- 0.024 ml.min-1 (mean +/- SEM). Concurrently, saliva bicarbonate concentration and secretion fell (135 +/- 1.6 to 67 +/- 1.7 mmol.l-1 and 272 +/- 7.6 to 15 +/- 2.6 mumol.min-1, respectively); [phosphate], [chloride] and [sodium] rose and [potassium] and osmolality were unaltered

Facial nerve (FN) dysfunction remains a clinically important complication of parotidectomy, even when recovery is ultimately complete. Traditional nerve identification relies on anatomic dissection, selective stimulation, and, in many cases, intraoperative monitoring (IONM). These approaches may be limited when anatomy is distorted. This study evaluated the feasibility, safety, and utility of autofluorescence-guided FN identification during parotidectomy. A retrospective case series was conducted in 18 patients who underwent superficial or total parotidectomy for parotid gland tumors. All proc

Up to 25% of the circulating nitrate in blood is actively taken up, concentrated, and secreted into saliva by the salivary glands. Salivary nitrate can be reduced to nitrite by the commensal bacteria in the oral cavity or stomach and then further converted to nitric oxide (NO) in vivo, which may play a role in gastric protection. However, whether salivary nitrate is actively secreted in human beings has not yet been determined. This study was designed to determine whether salivary nitrate is actively secreted in human beings as an acute stress response and what role salivary nitrate plays in s

This study aimed to perform ultrasonography of the tympanic bulla in healthy, non-sedated camelids for the first time. In the first step, dissection and sonography in cadaver specimens allowed the essential identification of the anatomical structures of the region of interest. Ultrasonography of the tympanic bulla was then performed on 71 healthy llamas and alpacas, and the length of the visible lateral bulla wall was measured sonographically. The reproducibility of measuring was determined between two examiners. Differences in length and the influences of gender, age, and body condition score

INTRODUCTION: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) are both extremely rare and aggressive histiocytic neoplasms that are most often treated with lymphoma-based chemotherapy; however, there is growing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in the second- or further-line settings as prognosis is typically poor in these neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: We describe two cases: first, HS in a 60-year-old man with primary tumor in the right anterior lower limb, and second, IDCS in an 82-year-old man in the right para-parotid region after initial wide local exci…

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma originates from reserve cells present in ducts of salivary glands and is the most common malignancy of the salivary glands. It is commonly found in the parotid gland, followed by the palatal and buccal mucous membranes. However, mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurrence in other intraoral sites, including the tongue base, is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old Chinese man presented with a progressively enlarging mass at the base of his left tongue. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an augmented soft tissue
