Academic performance and musculoskeletal pain in adolescents with uncorrected vision problems.

BACKGROUND: Undetected vision problems are common in school children, and a prevalence of up to 40% has previously been reported. Uncorrected vision and lack of optimal eye wear can have a significant impact on almost all aspects of everyday life, such as development and learning, academic performance, pain and discomfort, and quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between uncorrected vision problems, educational outcomes, and musculoskeletal pain symptoms. METHODS: A total of 152 school children (15.1 ± 0.8 years, mean ± SD; 40% males) were included in the study. All p

Saccadic movements during an exploratory visual search task in patients with glaucomatous visual field loss.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the saccadic movements of patients with visual field loss due to primary open-angle glaucoma. METHODS: Thirteen patients with good visual acuity (0.2 logMAR or better) (seven patients with primary open-angle glaucoma 65 ± 13 years) and six controls (51 ± 6 years) yielded a comprehensive ophthalmological examination, including Humphrey Visual Field tests (SITA-Standard 24-2), and performed a monocular, exploratory digital visual search task that quantifies the duration for finding the number "4" on a random array of digits distributed on the screen. After individual adjust

[Understanding and reflection on the prevention and control of pre-myopia in children].

The International Myopia Institute introduced the concept of "pre-myopia" in 2019, defining it as children with refractive error ≤+0.75 D and >-0.50 D. By considering baseline refractive error, age, and other quantifiable risk factors, there is a significant likelihood that individuals falling into this category may develop myopia in the future. Therefore, it is deemed worthwhile to implement preventative intervention measures. This article delves into the epidemiology of premyopia in children and adolescents, the criteria for determining pre-myopia, the characteristics of refractive changes, a

A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial of Base-in Relieving Prism Spectacle Treatment of Intermittent Exotropia.

SIGNIFICANCE: This pilot randomized trial, the first to evaluate a specific base-in relieving prism treatment strategy for childhood intermittent exotropia, did not support proceeding to a full-scale clinical trial. Defining and measuring prism adaptation in children with intermittent exotropia are challenging and need further study. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether to proceed to a full-scale trial of relieving base-in prism spectacles versus refractive correction alone for children with intermittent exotropia. METHODS: Children 3 years old to those younger than 13 years with d

Peripheral Refraction of Two Myopia Control Contact Lens Models in a Young Myopic Population.

Peripheral refraction can lead to the development of myopia. The aim of this study was to compare relative peripheral refraction (RPR) in the same cohort of uncorrected (WCL) and corrected eyes with two different soft contact lenses (CL) designed for myopia control, and to analyze RPR depending on the patient’s refraction. A total of 228 myopic eyes (114 healthy adult subjects) (−0.25 D to −10.00 D) were included. Open-field autorefraction was used to measure on- and off- axis refractions when uncorrected and corrected with the two CLs (dual focus (DF) and extended depth of focus (EDOF)). The

Comparing Static Perimetry Protocols of Central Field Testing among Patients with Glaucoma.

SIGNIFICANCE: On comparing the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) 24-2C Faster, which tests 10 additional points in the central field, with the 24-2 Swedish Interactive Thresholding Algorithm (SITA) Standard for detecting central field defects, we found that the HFA 24-2C Faster may be used for the initial field evaluation in glaucoma with the advantage of a shorter testing time. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the HFA 24-2C Faster with the 24-2 SITA Standard and 10-2 among patients with glaucoma for the number of defective central points, global indices, and testing time. METHODS: Sixty eye

Using high-density perimetry to explore new approaches for characterizing visual field defects.

High-density threshold perimetry has found that conventional static threshold perimetry misses defects due to undersampling. However, high-density testing can be both slow and limited by normal fixational eye movements. We explored alternatives by studying displays of high-density perimetry results for angioscotomas in healthy eyes-areas of reduced sensitivity in the shadows of blood vessels. The right eyes of four healthy adults were tested with a Digital Light Ophthalmoscope that gathered retinal images while presenting visual stimuli. The images were used to infer stimulus location on each

Performance of virtual reality game-based automated perimetry in patients with childhood glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate VisuALL, a game-based automated perimetry device, utilizing virtual reality (VR) goggles, in a cohort of patients with childhood glaucoma. METHODS: In this prospective series, the results of consecutive patients with childhood glaucoma performing both VisuALL VR field (VRF) and Humphrey visual field (HVF) 24-2 testing were compared. A masked ophthalmologist graded both VRF and HVF tests for field defects (three clustered abnormal points in total or pattern deviation plot). VRF testing was performed binocularly and with the child's own spectacles. The two devices were asse

Detectability of Visual Field Defects in Glaucoma Using Moving Versus Static Stimuli for Perimetry.

PURPOSE: We have previously shown that using moving, instead of static, stimuli extends the effective dynamic range of automated perimetry in glaucoma. In this study, we further investigate the effect of using moving stimuli on the detectability of functional loss. METHODS: We used two experimental perimetry paradigms to test 155 subjects with a diagnosis of glaucoma or glaucoma suspect, and 34 healthy control subjects. One test used stimuli moving parallel to the average nerve fiber bundle orientation at each location; the other used static stimuli. Algorithms were otherwise identical. Sensi

Archetypal Analysis Reveals Quantifiable Patterns of Visual Field Loss in Optic Neuritis.

PURPOSE: Identifying and monitoring visual field (VF) defects due to optic neuritis (ON) relies on qualitative clinician interpretation. Archetypal analysis (AA), a form of unsupervised machine learning, is used to quantify VF defects in glaucoma. We hypothesized that AA can identify quantifiable, ON-specific patterns (as archetypes [ATs]) of VF loss that resemble known ON VF defects. METHODS: We applied AA to a dataset of 3892 VFs prospectively collected from 456 eyes in the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT), and decomposed each VF into component ATs (total weight = 100%). AA of 568 VFs

Considerations for the identification of autism spectrum disorder in children with vision or hearing impairment: A critical review of the literature and recommendations for practice.

OBJECTIVE: There is higher risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across many pediatric neurological conditions characterized by vision impairment or hearing loss. Early and accurate identification of ASD is imperative in promoting access to appropriate and early evidenced-based intervention; however, differential diagnosis can be particularly challenging in children with sensory impairment given the heterogeneity of ASD combined with the impact of vision impairment or hearing loss/deafness on development and behavior. A neuropsychologist's unique expertise and appreciation of the interplay b

A new trifocal corneal inlay for presbyopia.

Corneal inlays (CIs) are the most recent surgical procedure for the treatment of presbyopia in patients who want complete independence from the use of glasses or contact lenses. Although refractive surgery in presbyopic patients is mostly performed in combination with cataract surgery, when the implantation of an intraocular lens is not necessary, the option of CIs has the advantage of being minimally invasive. Current designs of CIs are, either: small aperture devices, or refractive devices, however, both methods do not have good performance simultaneously at intermediate and near distances i
