BACKGROUND: Removal of orbital tumors is a difficult problem. The goal of this study was to evaluate the advantages of the craniofacial approach to remove such tumors and to evaluate ultrasonic bone cutting during the procedure.
METHOD: The authors reviewed their experience with 57 tumors of the posterior cavity using lateral craniofacial and frontal transsinus approaches. Orbital osteotomies were performed with mechanical instruments or piezoelectric bone surgery as a minimally invasive surgery. For each case, the quality of bone cutting and soft tissue damage were evaluated.
RESULTS: Crani

We report on a sporadic case of hitherto unknown lethal skeletal dysplasia. The cardinal clinical manifestations consisted of frontal bossing, cloudy corneae, low nasal ridge, and micrognathia, hypoplastic thorax, and rhizomelic micromelia. Laryngoscopy and neck CT disclosed laryngeal stenosis, and brain CT demonstrated hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. Skeletal survey demonstrated hypoplasia of facial bones and short skull base, extremely severe platyspondyly, hypoplastic ilia, and delayed epiphyseal ossification and rhizomelic shortness of tubular bones. The long bones appeared overtubulate

Ophthalmoplegia and blindness caused by squamous cell carcinoma were reported in a cat. Unilateral functional deficits of cranial nerves II, III, IV, and VI and of the sympathetic nerve supply caused blindness, complete ophthalmoplegia, and Horner syndrome. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a proliferating bony lesion associated with the right tympanic bulla, right temporal bone, right side of the mandible, and left frontal bone. A focal area of bony destruction involved the right sphenoid bone. The cat was euthanatized and necropsied. Squamous cell carcinoma was identified invading…

The upper eyelid fistula caused by intracranial infection is rare. We present a rare case of an upper eyelid fistula caused by a chronic infection of the artificial dura mater, the bone flap, and the absorbable fixation materials following epilepsy surgery in a 13-year-old male. After surgery for left frontal lobe epilepsy, the patient developed a purulent discharge from the left upper eyelid. Imaging studies revealed a bone defect in the cranial bone flap, with the infection extending to the upper eyelid. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was identified as the causative agent. Surgical intervention, inc

Giant cell tumor of the bone (GCTB) is a rare primary bone neoplasm, representing about 5% of all primary bone tumors. Most GCTBs are found in the epiphysis of long bones, with only 2% of GCTBs involving the skull. In recent years, the receptor activator of nuclear factor Kappa ligand monoclonal antibody denosumab has been demonstrated as a promising therapeutic option for GCTB; however, this is an evolving field. We present a case of a 57-year-old female with a rare GCTB in the right orbit and sinuses, originally thought to be an aneurysmal bone cyst. Her symptoms included proptosis, intermit

A normal forehead has two parts, shaped differently: (1) the lower part (corresponding to the supraorbital rim and glabellar area) set at a steep angle to the nose; (2) the upper part, sloping gently backward. To reproduce this normal anatomy in cases of cranostenosis affecting the frontal area, we found it essential to mobilize and reshape a supraorbital bar of bone and to transfer a suitable piece of the cranial vault in one piece to make a new upper forehead. By this method we have treated 18 patients with oxycephaly since 1973, with good results. We have also operated on babies with cranio

Autolyzed, antigen-extracted, allogeneic bone (AAA bone) is prepared from cortical bones of human organ donors. AAA bone possesses osteoinductive properties as it delivers BMPs from its bone matrix. Within a prospective study, 37 cranial defects were reconstructed using AAA bone implants over a period of more than 7 years. The patients were followed-up at standardized intervals. Roentgenographic assessments and bone scintigraphies revealed osseous integration and remodelling of the AAA bone implants. In one quarter of the cases re-entry was performed 10 to 18 months after the cranioplasty (rem

The purpose of this study was to compare the osteogenic potential of a synthetic and a demineralized bone matrix (DBM) putty using a cranial defect model in New Zealand white rabbits. Paired, bilateral critical-size defects (10 mm) were prepared in the frontal bones of 12 rabbits and filled with either OsteoSelect DBM Putty or NovaBone calcium-phosphosilicate putty. At days 43 and 91, 6 rabbits were killed and examined via semiquantitative histology and quantitative histomorphometry. Defects filled with the DBM putty were histologically associated with less inflammation and fibrous tissue in t…

Congenital encephaloceles are rare lesions which are usually seen in the occipital region, in the West. They may rarely be seen in the frontal region and they have distinct diagnostic features, together with several other pathological conditions occurring in this region. In order to emphasize these points, a retrospective analysis of 35 cases which have been operated on in our clinic, is made in this study. The findings are compared with the data obtained from the literature.

As a result of a detailed study of "Saint Jerome in the Wilderness", we found that Leonardo described the skull in this work in an original way. A portion of the skull's face is visible in St Jerome's chest and abdomen projection. This image shows the orbit, the frontal bone, the nasal aperture and the zygomatic process. In our opinion, Leonardo described the skull in the painting with his usual originality.

Two brothers, 17 and 21 years of age, with depressed nasal bridge, prominent frontal bones, hypoplastic maxilla, mild sensorineural hearing loss, broad terminal phalanges and mild pulmonary stenosis are presented. These findings are similar to those of the syndrome described by Keipert et al. in 1973. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second report of this syndrome.

A case of frontal osteoma observed at the Maxillofacial Surgery and Odontostomatology Division of the Miulli di Acquaviva delle Fonti (Ba) Regional Hospital, treated surgically by the creation of a bone passage in correspondence with the anterior wall of the sinus which is then reset and osteosynthesized, is reported. The technique adopted thus makes possible full visualisation of the neoformation and valid morphological and aesthetic recovery.

BACKGROUND: The authors' purpose is to present changes in anthropometric fronto-orbital dimensions after surgical correction of metopic synostosis.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed craniometric dimensions in older patients with metopic synostosis corrected by fronto-orbital advancement performed by the senior author (J.B.M.). Preoperative and postoperative linear measures (frontal breadth, cranial width, and intercanthal distance) were taken by direct anthropometry. Interdacryon distance and width of the bandeau were also recorded intraoperatively, before and after widening. Foll

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an established optical neuroimaging method for measuring functional hemodynamic responses to infer neural activation. However, the impact of individual anatomy on the sensitivity of fNIRS measuring hemodynamics within cortical gray matter is still unknown. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and structural MRI of 23 healthy subjects (mean age: 25.0±2.8 years), we characterized the individual distribution of tissue-specific NIR-light absorption underneath 24 prefrontal fNIRS channels. We, thereby, investigated the impact of scalp-cortex distance

Primary sarcomas of the central nervous system are rare. These tumors is rapid growth often produces mass effect on the brain. Diagnosis is rendered pathologically after resection. Surgical resection is the mainstay treatment and need the adjuvant therapy. We report a 44-year-old female with a meningeal sarcoma of frontal meninges. She complained headache for 2 months and palpable forehead mass for 3 weeks. Brain MRI demonstrated a soft tissue mass sized as 5.3×3.7×3.1 cm with well-defined osteolysis on the midline of the frontal bone. The mass attached to anterior falx without infiltration in…

Among complications of frontal sinusitis, Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is one of the rare complications, which is characterized by the occurrence of subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Primarily, infection or trauma is the causative agent and is often seen in late childhood and adolescence. If left untreated for a longer period of time, further intracranial complications such as subdural empyema, epidural abscess, cerebral abscess, and meningitis may occur. We report a case of a 13-year-old male who presented with a history of a fall 15 days ago, and the clinical query was…
