Imaging phenotype evaluation from digital breast tomosynthesis data: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been widely adopted as a supplemental imaging modality for diagnostic evaluation of breast cancer and confirmation studies. In this study, a deep learning-based method for characterizing breast tissue patterns in DBT data is presented. METHODS: A set of 5388 2D image patches was produced from 230 right mediolateral oblique, 259 left mediolateral oblique, 18 right craniocaudal, and 15 left craniocaudal single-breast DBT studies, using slice-wise annotations of abnormalities and normal tissue. We implemented a patch classifier to predict sample

Septic Arthritis Modeling Using Sonographic Fusion with Attention and Selective Transformation: a Preliminary Study.

Conventionally diagnosing septic arthritis relies on detecting the causal pathogens in samples of synovial fluid, synovium, or blood. However, isolating these pathogens through cultures takes several days, thus delaying both diagnosis and treatment. Establishing a quantitative classification model from ultrasound images for rapid septic arthritis diagnosis is mandatory. For the study, a database composed of 342 images of non-septic arthritis and 168 images of septic arthritis produced by grayscale (GS) and power Doppler (PD) ultrasound was constructed. In the proposed architecture of fusion wi

Deep learning based uterine fibroid detection in ultrasound images.

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors originating from the uterus's smooth muscle layer, often leading to symptoms such as pelvic pain, and reproductive issues. Early detection is crucial to prevent complications such as infertility or the need for invasive treatments like hysterectomy. One of the main challenges in diagnosing uterine fibroids is the lack of specific symptoms, which can mimic other gynecological conditions. This often leads to under-diagnosis or misdiagnosis, delaying appropriate management. In this research, an attention based fine-tuned EfficientNetB0 model is proposed f

A Vision Transformer-Based Framework for Knowledge Transfer From Multi-Modal to Mono-Modal Lymphoma Subtyping Models.

Determining lymphoma subtypes is a crucial step for better patient treatment targeting to potentially increase their survival chances. In this context, the existing gold standard diagnosis method, which relies on gene expression technology, is highly expensive and time-consuming, making it less accessibility. Although alternative diagnosis methods based on IHC (immunohistochemistry) technologies exist (recommended by the WHO), they still suffer from similar limitations and are less accurate. Whole Slide Image (WSI) analysis using deep learning models has shown promising potential for cancer di

Tendon morphological changes after a prolonged ski race can be detected by ultrasound echo intensity.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound imaging techniques have been used to assess the characteristics of skeletal muscles and tendons. Such techniques (gray scale analysis) allow qualitative evaluation and have been used recently to assess the internal structure of muscles and tendons by computer-aided gray scale analysis. We hypothesized that changes in the internal structure of the Achilles and patellar tendons after a ski mountaineering race competition could be detected with ultrasound. METHODS: Twenty athletes were recruited during the 19th Millet Tour du Rutor extreme, a three-day ski mountaineering c

A Variance-reduction Approach to Detection of the Thyroid-nodule Boundary on Ultrasound Images.

To perform computer-aided diagnosis of the thyroid nodules on ultrasound images, the location and boundary of nodules should be clearly defined. However, the identification of thyroid nodule boundary is a difficult issue due to the biological characteristics of the nodules, the physics and quality of ultrasound imaging, and the subjective factors and operating conditions of the operator. In this study, we propose a novel and semiautomatic method for detecting the boundary of thyroid nodule based on the Variance-Reduction (V-R) statistics without image preprocessing. The region of interest (ROI

Evaluation of condylar structures on panoramic radiographs in adolescent patients with coeliac disease.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease (CD) is a common disorder that usually originates from calcium malabsorption. Thus, it is accepted that patients with CD have lo- wer bone mineral density than that of healthy individuals. The aim of this study was to assess condylar height, width, area, and perimeter on digital panoramic radiographs in patients with CD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs obtained from 44 patients with CD were age- and sex-matched with 44 Class 1 (ANB: 2 ± 2°) patients, and out- comes were analysed. Radiographs were digitised using Image J software, and condylar height, w

Analysis of the Cluster Prominence Feature for Detecting Calcifications in Mammograms.

In mammograms, a calcification is represented as small but brilliant white region of the digital image. Earlier detection of malignant calcifications in patients provides high expectation of surviving to this disease. Nevertheless, white regions are difficult to see by visual inspection because a mammogram is a gray-scale image of the breast. To help radiologists in detecting abnormal calcification, computer-inspection methods of mammograms have been proposed; however, it remains an open important issue. In this context, we propose a strategy for detecting calcifications in mammograms based on

The impact of simulated motion blur on lesion detection performance in full-field digital mammography.

OBJECTIVE: Motion blur is a known phenomenon in full-field digital mammography, but the impact on lesion detection is unknown. This is the first study to investigate detection performance with varying magnitudes of simulated motion blur. METHODS: 7 observers (15 ± 5 years' reporting experience) evaluated 248 cases (62 containing malignant masses, 62 containing malignant microcalcifications and 124 normal cases) for 3 conditions: no blurring (0 mm) and 2 magnitudes of simulated blurring (0.7 and 1.5 mm). Abnormal cases were biopsy proven. Mathematical simulation was used to provide a pixel shi

Multi-scale hyperspectral imaging of cervical neoplasia.

PURPOSE: This preliminary study aimed at investigating the feasibility and effective of multi-scale hyperspectral imaging in detecting cervical neoplasia at both tissue and cellular levels. METHODS: In this paper, we describe a noninvasive diagnosis method with a hyperspectral imager for detection and location of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) at multiple scales. At the macroscopic level, the hyperspectral imager was applied to capture the reflectance images of the entire cervix in vivo at a series of wavelengths. At the microscopic level, the hyperspectral imager was coupled with a

Breast cancer diagnosis in digitized mammograms using curvelet moments.

BACKGROUND: Feature extraction is a key issue in designing a computer aided diagnosis system. Recent researches on breast cancer diagnosis have reported the effectiveness of multiscale transforms (wavelets and curvelets) for mammogram analysis and have shown the superiority of curvelet transform. However, the curse of dimensionality problem arises when using the curvelet coefficients and therefore a reduction method is required to extract a reduced set of discriminative features. METHODS: This paper deals with this problem and proposes a feature extraction method based on curvelet transform a

Whole-slide imaging is a robust alternative to traditional fluorescent microscopy for fluorescence in situ hybridization imaging using break-apart DNA probes.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization is an indispensable technique used in routine pathology and for theranostic purposes. Because fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques require sophisticated microscopic workstations and long procedures of image acquisition with sometimes subjective and poorly reproducible results, we decided to test a whole-slide imaging system as an alternative approach. In this study, we used the latest generation of Pannoramic 250 Flash digital microscopes (P250 Flash digital microscopes; 3DHISTECH, Budapest, Hungary) to digitize fluorescence in situ hybridization sli

Challenges in mammography: part 1, artifacts in digital mammography.

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of breast cancer is directly related to the radiologist's ability to detect abnormalities visible only on mammograms. Artifacts on mammograms reduce image quality and may present clinical and technical difficulties for the radiologist, mammography technologist, medical physicist, and equipment service personnel. CONCLUSION: In this article, we will illustrate the appearance of artifacts in full field digital mammography, review the causes of these artifacts, and discuss methods to eliminate artifacts in digital mammography.

Implementation of a novel interpolating method to epicardial potential mapping for atrial fibrillation study.

Epicardial potential mapping is an efficient way to visualize the potential distribution on the epicardial surface. We found in our previous study, that the traditional linear interpolation used for the epicardial mapping may cause errors and distortions in reconstruction of the electric activities on the epicardial surface especially during the atrial fibrillation. In this study, we devoted on the implementation of a 3D interpolating method, and verified it in comparison with another interpolating method as well as studying of the mechanism of vagal atrial fibrillation (AF). In case studying,

Evaluation of computer-aided detection (CAD) prompting techniques for mammography.

Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, in which abnormalities are automatically detected and their locations presented to the radiologist as prompts, are increasingly being used to improve reader performance. The performance of CAD systems can be evaluated in two ways: by measuring the performance of the algorithms, or by monitoring the performance of readers using the system. All aspects of evaluation need careful consideration to avoid potential bias. This paper examines a variety of different approaches to evaluation and discusses their relative strengths and weaknesses.
