Computer image analysis of toxic fatty degeneration in rat liver.

Fatty degeneration of the liver is one of the most frequently observed pathological changes in the experimental estimation of the toxicity of chemical compounds. The intensity of this kind of damage is most often detected by means of a generally accepted scale of points, whereas the classification is performed according to the subjective "feeling" of the pathologist. In modern pathological diagnostics, computer analysis of images is used to perform an objective estimation of the degree of damage to various organs. In order to check the usefulness of this kind of method, comparative biochemical

Fully automated 3D segmentation of periapical lesions on CBCT images using nnU-Net v2.

AIM: to evaluate the performance of an nnU-Net v2–based architecture for the voxel-level detection, lesion-wise detection and 3D segmentation of periapical lesions on CBCT images. METHODOLOGY: In this retrospective study, 150 CBCT scans acquired for various clinical indications were initially evaluated. 10 scans met the exclusion criteria, leaving 140 CBCT scans that were annotated for the presence of periapical lesions. Periapical lesions were manually segmented on a web-based platform by a trained researcher and verified by an experienced endodontist to obtain the ground-truth segmentations.

Lung Nodule Malignancy Classification On 3D CT Images Using a Cosine Similarity-Enhanced Graph Attention Network.

Lung cancer remains a major contributor to global cancer-related deaths, largely due to diagnoses occurring at advanced stages. Accurately distinguishing between benign and malignant pulmonary nodules plays a pivotal role in facilitating early detection and timely intervention. To address the limitations of traditional methods that consider only individual CT slices and suffer from high false-positive rates, this work proposes an end-to-end patient-level classification framework for pulmonary nodule malignancy based on a Cosine Similarity-Enhanced Graph Attention Network (CSEGAT). The proposed

Using Convolutional Neural Network with Cheat Sheet and Data Augmentation to Detect Breast Cancer in Mammograms.

The American Cancer Society expected to diagnose 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in the USA and 48,530 new cases of noninvasive breast cancer among women in 2020. Early detection of breast cancer, followed by appropriate treatment, can reduce the risk of death from this disease. DL through CNN can assist imaging specialists in classifying the mammograms accurately. Accurate classification of mammograms using CNN needs a well-trained CNN by a large number of labeled mammograms. Unfortunately, a large number of labeled mammograms are not always available. In this study, a novel proce

CT angiography after 20 years: a transformation in cardiovascular disease characterization continues to advance.

Through a marriage of spiral computed tomography (CT) and graphical volumetric image processing, CT angiography was born 20 years ago. Fueled by a series of technical innovations in CT and image processing, over the next 5-15 years, CT angiography toppled conventional angiography, the undisputed diagnostic reference standard for vascular disease for the prior 70 years, as the preferred modality for the diagnosis and characterization of most cardiovascular abnormalities. This review recounts the evolution of CT angiography from its development and early challenges to a maturing modality that ha

[SPECT/CT - Technical aspects and optimization possibilities].

In contrast to positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), the currently available single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) systems are very heterogeneous. On the side of the gamma cameras, dual-head systems are established, which are not very different from one manufacturer to the other. For the CT component, there are low dose tubes on the one side and flat detector-based cone beam CT and multislice-CT on the other. The CT image data can be used for anatomic correlation of suspicious findings as well as for attenuation correction of SPECT data.

Optimization of hypovascular liver lesion detectability in dual-energy CT using deep learning image reconstruction: a phantom study for potential iodine dose reduction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal low-keV level using deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) that maximizes lesion detectability, and to assess the potential for iodinated contrast media (ICM) reduction based on detectability improvements across varying patient body habitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An abdominal phantom was scanned using a standard thoraco-abdomino-pelvic dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) protocol during the portal venous phase, with three rings inserted simulating different body habitus. Virtual monoenergetic images (VMI) were reconstructed from 40 to 70 keV in 10 ke

Dose and blending fraction quantification for adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction based on low-contrast detectability in abdomen CT.

PURPOSE: The utilization of iterative reconstruction makes it difficult to identify the dose-noise relationship, resulting in empirical design of scan protocols and inconsistent conclusions on dose reduction for consistent image quality. This study was to quantitatively determine the dose and the blending fraction of adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) based on the specified low-contrast detectability (LCD). METHODS: A tissue equivalent abdomen phantom and a GE discovery 750 HD computed tomography (CT) were utilized. The normality of the noise distribution was tested at vario

Iterative Reconstruction May Improve Diagnosis of Gout: An Ex Vivo (Bio)Phantom Dual-Energy Computed Tomography Study.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that, compared with filtered back projection (FBP), iterative reconstruction (IR) increases the detected volume of uric acid, which serves as a measure of the sensitivity of the method, and therefore allows examinations with lower radiation exposure. Thus, the aim of our study was to evaluate the role of IR in dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for gout assessment and volumetry in an ex vivo gout model using an epoxy phantom and a biophantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prepared specimens with different concentrations of monosodium uric acid in ultrasound gel (30%

Object-constrained meshless deformable algorithm for high speed 3D nonrigid registration between CT and CBCT.

PURPOSE: High-speed nonrigid registration between the planning CT and the treatment CBCT data is critical for real time image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to improve the dose distribution and to reduce the toxicity to adjacent organs. The authors propose a new fully automatic 3D registration framework that integrates object-based global and seed constraints with the grayscale-based "demons" algorithm. METHODS: Clinical objects were segmented on the planning CT images and were utilized as meshless deformable models during the nonrigid registration process. The meshless models reinforced a global

Validation of Compressed Sensing Accelerated Magnetization Prepared Rapid Acquisition Gradient Echo for Fast and Reliable Brain Volume Measurement.

Objectives: To assess the clinical viability of compressed sensing magnetization, we prepared a rapid acquisition gradient echo (CS-MPRAGE) for brain volume measurement by comparing its scan time and image quality with standard MPRAGE. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed a total of 40 morphologically normal MRIs from relatively young subjects (mean age 27.03 ± 5.02, range 19~40, F:M = 33:7) who underwent both CS-MPRAGE and standard MPRAGE. MRI was performed with a 3T MR scanner using a 64-channel head coil. Volumetric data analysis was conducted using commercial AI-powered quanti

Improving the lesion appearance on FLAIR images synthetized from quantitative MRI: a fast, hybrid approach.

OBJECTIVE: The image quality of synthetized FLAIR (fluid attenuated inversion recovery) images is generally inferior to its conventional counterpart, especially regarding the lesion contrast mismatch. This work aimed to improve the lesion appearance through a hybrid methodology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We combined a full brain 5-min MR-STAT acquisition followed by FLAIR synthetization step with an ultra-under sampled conventional FLAIR sequence and performed the retrospective and prospective analysis of the proposed method on the patient datasets and a healthy volunteer. RESULTS: All performa

A DCM for resting state fMRI.

This technical note introduces a dynamic causal model (DCM) for resting state fMRI time series based upon observed functional connectivity--as measured by the cross spectra among different brain regions. This DCM is based upon a deterministic model that generates predicted crossed spectra from a biophysically plausible model of coupled neuronal fluctuations in a distributed neuronal network or graph. Effectively, the resulting scheme finds the best effective connectivity among hidden neuronal states that explains the observed functional connectivity among haemodynamic responses. This is becaus

High on sparsity: Interbin compensation of cardiac motion for improved assessment of left-ventricular function using 5D whole-heart MRI.

PURPOSE: Cardiac magnetic resonance is the gold standard for evaluating left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Standard protocols, however, can be inefficient, facing challenges due to significant operator and patient involvement. Although the free-running framework (FRF) addresses these challenges, the potential of the extensive data it collects remains underutilized. Therefore, we propose to leverage the large amount of data collected by incorporating interbin cardiac motion compensation into FRF (FRF-MC) to improve both image quality and LVEF measurement accuracy, while reducing the sen

The nasal septum deviation index (NSDI) based on CBCT data.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether three-dimensional morphometric parameters could be useful in nasal septal deviation (NSD) diagnosis and, secondarily, whether CBCT could be considered an adequate imaging technique for the proposed task. METHODS: We analysed images of 46 subjects who underwent CBCT for reasons not related to this study. Two experienced operators divided all the images into healthy and NSD subjects. Subsequently, the images were segmented using ITK Snap in order to obtain the three-dimensional model of the nasal airways and compute four morphological parameters: septal deviation an

Similarity guided feature labeling for lesion detection.

The performance of automatic lesion detection is often affected by the intra- and inter-subject feature variations of lesions and normal anatomical structures. In this work, we propose a similarity-guided sparse representation method for image patch labeling, with three aspects of similarity information modeling, to reduce the chance that the best reconstruction of a feature vector does not provide the correct classification. Based on this classification model, we then design a new approach for detecting lesions in positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) images. The approach

Prostate Cancer Risk Stratification via Nondestructive 3D Pathology with Deep Learning-Assisted Gland Analysis.

Prostate cancer treatment planning is largely dependent upon examination of core-needle biopsies. The microscopic architecture of the prostate glands forms the basis for prognostic grading by pathologists. Interpretation of these convoluted three-dimensional (3D) glandular structures via visual inspection of a limited number of two-dimensional (2D) histology sections is often unreliable, which contributes to the under- and overtreatment of patients. To improve risk assessment and treatment decisions, we have developed a workflow for nondestructive 3D pathology and computational analysis of who
