Defining and Measuring Vulnerability in Young People.

Adolescents and youth, together addressed as "young people", form the future building blocks of any society. They being most energetic and dynamic, tend to get involved in high-risk behaviors making themselves susceptible to criminal offences, accidents, physical injuries, emotional trauma, and medical problems - some of them extremely serious like transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The concept of vulnerability is applicable to all the people who are more exposed to risks than their peers like the young people. In order to deal with social evils like criminal offences, domesti

The psychosocial impact of epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a disease in which the skin blisters in response to minimal friction, causing painful wounds. Despite the potentially severe nature of epidermolysis bullosa, research on the psychosocial issues is scarce. The aims of the study were to explore the psychosocial impact of epidermolysis bullosa on affected adults and to identify associated support needs. We collected data using semistructured interviews and employed inductive thematic analysis to organize and analyze them. Three main themes—beliefs about containing the impact of EB, understandings of the disease, and

An interprofessional service-learning course: uniting students across educational levels and promoting patient-centered care.

Recognizing the importance of interprofessional education, we developed a pilot interprofessional education course at our institution that included a total of 10 nursing, BS health psychology, premedical, and pharmacy students. Course goals were for students to: 1) learn about, practice, and enhance their skills as members of an interprofessional team, and 2) create and deliver a community-based service-learning program to help prevent or slow the progression of cardiovascular disease in older adults. Teaching methods included lecture, role-play, case studies, peer editing, oral and poster pre

Risk and protective influences in the lives of siblings of youths with spina bifida.

The impact of childhood chronic health conditions like spina bifida (SB) is a shared family experience. However, the lived experience of siblings is not well known. One hundred and fifty-five brothers and sisters of a child with SB responded to an open-ended question included in an anonymous self-administered mail questionnaire designed to enhance awareness of how adolescent siblings experience this chronic condition. Content analysis performed by interdisciplinary authors identified four domains--Rewards and Consequences of Spina Bifida, Journey Toward Acceptance of Spina Bifida, Emotional Cl

Timed essay writing: implications for high-stakes tests.

The majority of high-stakes tests from elementary school through postsecondary education include the timed impromptu essay as a measure of writing performance. For adolescents with writing disorders, this type of evaluation often presents a significant barrier. The purpose of the current study was twofold. First, we investigated the influence of handwritten, typed, and typed/edited formats of an expository essay on the quality scores received by students with (n = 65) and without (n = 65) dyslexia. Second, we examined the contribution of spelling, handwriting, fluency, and vocabulary complexit

Youth tobacco use: a global perspective for child health care clinicians.

Tobacco dependence, responsible for approximately 4 million annual deaths worldwide, is considered to be a "pediatric disease." The smoking epidemic is spreading rapidly in developing countries. Factors contributing to youth smoking in developing countries include cultural traditions, tobacco's easy accessibility and moderate pricing, peer and family influences, and tobacco companies' advertisements and promotional activities. Secondhand tobacco smoke exposure is a substantial problem that causes increased rates of pneumonia, otitis media, asthma, and other short- and long-term pediatric condi

Ultra-processed food consumption, dietary behaviors, and marketing exposure among school adolescents in urban Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for establishing lifelong dietary habits. The growing availability and marketing of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) pose increasing public health nutrition concerns, particularly in rapidly urbanizing settings. However, qualitative evidence on how adolescents in urban Ethiopia engage with UPFs remains limited. This study explored UPF-related dietary behaviors, consumption patterns, and exposure to food marketing among school adolescents in Adama Town, Ethiopia. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using 15 in-depth interviews with purposively se

Narrative shielding and prebunking: a synergistic strategy against vaccine hesitancy in pediatrics.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a major challenge for pediatric immunization programs, shaped by a complex interplay of structural, relational, and informational factors. In Latin America, these dynamics are further influenced by health system fragmentation and social inequities, requiring approaches that extend beyond information-based interventions. AREAS COVERED: This review examines the multidimensional nature of vaccine hesitancy in pediatric populations, with a focus on Latin America. It examines the role of digital environments, clinical communication, and system-level f

Barriers and facilitators to fruit and vegetable consumption: A TDF-based analysis in Bulgaria.

Fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption in Bulgaria is critically low-among the lowest in the European Union. This study applied the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to identify key barriers and facilitators of F&V intake among 306 Bulgarian adults. A cross-sectional survey measured TDF-derived beliefs and self-reported F&V consumption. Multiple regression analysis revealed that beliefs about consequences and peer social influences were the strongest predictors of intake frequency. Participants who recognised the health benefits of F&V and perceived healthy eating as common among their friend

Down Syndrome and Obesity Management: Lifestyle Observations Made in the Framework of the GO-DS21 Project and Clinical Recommendations.

Introduction/background: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) face a higher and earlier risk of overweight and/or obesity than the general population, influenced by factors like limited physical activity, suboptimal diet, stress, and sleep disorders. Despite the impact these lifestyle factors can have, there is a significant lack of robust, evidence-based guidelines for managing overweight and obesity in these individuals, particularly for the adult population. Results: Based on findings from an observational study across three European sites, within the EU Horizon-2020 GO-DS21 project, in this

Empowering Allied Health Research Roles in Hospital Systems: The Role of an Allied Health Scientist in a Pediatric Healthcare System.

This commentary describes the implementation and impact of the Allied Health Scientist role within a pediatric hospital system. A dedicated Allied Health Scientist can support allied health professionals at both the individual and system level by providing mentorship, building research capacity, and fostering a culture of evidence-based practice. To evaluate the role's impact within the institution, a retrospective review of internal and external allied health projects and dissemination activities from 2018 to 2024 was undertaken. Findings highlight how the integration of this role has positiv

Incidence, prevention and management of severe infections in patients undergoing therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is a disease marked by high infectious risk due to a combination of patient, disease and treatment-related factors. As a new landscape in the therapeutic panorama is emerging with the introduction of novel agents, it is essential to understand their impact on the incidence of infectious events and consequently what prevention and management strategies should be introduced. AREAS COVERED: We searched the PUBMED database considering peer-reviewed papers published between January 2013 and January 2025 that reported on at least 100 patients and pro

The relationship between virtual learning during the COVID-19 lockdown and body image disturbances among college students.

OBJECTIVE: College students tend to have lower body image than other groups, in part because of comparisons they make with peers. The closing of college campuses due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the ability to compare; thus, we investigate how the transition to and from virtual-learning influenced body image. PARTICIPANTS: Third- and fourth-year undergraduates (N = 103) at a private university. METHOD: In Fall 2021, undergraduates retrospectively indicated their frequency of body talk, body surveillance, and restrained eating behaviors before the pandemic, during virtual-s

Early insight into social network structure predicts climbing the social ladder.

While occupying an influential position within one's social network brings many advantages, it is unknown how certain individuals rise in social prominence. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset that tracks an entirely new network of college freshmen (N = 187), we test whether "climbing the social ladder" depends on knowing how other people are connected to each other. Those who ultimately come to occupy the most influential positions exhibit early and accurate representations of their network's general, abstract structure (i.e., who belongs to which communities and cliques). In contrast, detailed

Fine Motor Development Growth Curves for Down Syndrome.

This study seeks to develop fine motor development growth curves for children with Down syndrome, specifically related to grasping and visual motor integration skills. A cross-sectional retrospective chart review was completed on a large cohort of children with Down syndrome from birth to 6 years of age who completed the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2nd Edition (PDMS-2). Although both fine motor and visual motor development were delayed in children with Down syndrome compared with typically developing peers, and a negative association between fine motor quotient and age was observed, gra

Fitting Assistive Technology for People with Hearing Loss: The Importance of Remote Microphone Systems' Electroacoustic Verification.

The remote microphone system (RMS) must be appropriately working when fitting it in a person with hearing loss. For this verification process, the concept of transparency is adopted. If it is not transparent, the hearing aid (HA) may not capture the user's voice and his peers appropriately, or the RMS may not have the advantage in gain needed to emphasize the speaker's voice. This study investigates the influence of the receiver's gain setting on the transparency of different brands and models of RMS and HAs. It is a retrospective chart review with 277 RMS from three distinct brands (RMA, RMB,

Gender differences in anomalous subcortical morphology for children with ADHD.

Although studies showed subtle reductions in brain volume in fronto-striatial regions in children with ADHD, there have been limited investigations of volume and lateralizaton in subcortical structures and a paucity of exploration of the influence of gender on these findings. This study aims to examine morphology of subcortical structures and their association with ADHD symptoms in boys and girls as compared to their typically-developing (TD) peers. One hundred and eighty five children aged 7-14 years with and without ADHD were included from ADHD-200 Consortium. Results showed that compared to

Influences on grief among parentally bereaved adults.

Although the parent-child relationship is significant throughout life, many changes occur as children grow, particularly during young adulthood. Parental loss and resulting grief during adulthood is likely influenced by many variables, including age, gender, relationship quality, and sex roles. In the present study, parentally bereaved adults completed measures assessing parental involvement, personal grief and adjustment, and sex role preferences. Analyses of covariance indicated that gender of the bereaved child was significant in predicting some aspects of grief, wherein females were more s
