INTRODUCTION: Air pollution and transportation noise pollution has been linked to gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, but their relationship remains unclear.
METHODS: We extracted the significantly modulated genes and CpG sites related to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10, and NOx) and transportation noise pollution (aircraft, railway, and traffic road noise) from previous published studies. Genome-wide methylation analysis and colocalization analysis with these CpG sites and GWAS data of GI diseases were performed to disentangle the relationship between pollution-related blood DNA methylation (DNAm) al

The long-term mitigation of human-domestic animal-wildlife conflicts is complex and difficult. Over the last 50 yr, the primary biomedical concepts and actualized collaborative global field applications of oral rabies vaccination to wildlife serve as one dramatic example that revolutionized the field of infectious disease management of free-ranging animals. Oral vaccination of wildlife occurred in diverse locales within Africa, Eurasia, the Middle East, and North America. Although rabies is not a candidate for eradication, over a billion doses of vaccine-laden baits distributed strategically b

Mercury (Hg) fulminate was used as a primary fuse in World War (WW) munitions, and may consequently be a Hg source for impacted environments. Mercury is a conspicuous and persistent pollutant, with methylmercury (MeHg) acting as a notorious neurotoxin. Considerable amounts of munitions were intentionally dumped in the North Sea and Baltic Sea following the First and Second WWs. After more than 70 years on the seafloor many munitions have corroded and likely release explosive compounds, including Hg fulminate. The Germany coastal city of Kiel was a manufacturing centre for submarines, and accor

BACKGROUND: Fighter pilots undergo extensive medical screening but may still miss rare diseases like latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). LADA patients have circulating autoantibodies directed against pancreatic beta cell antigens and present with frank diabetes late in life which may elude conventional military flight screening.CASE REPORT: Two fifth-generation fighter pilots, a 38-yr-old man (patient 1) and a 27-yr-old man (patient 2), with no significant past medical histories developed symptoms of fatigue, weight loss, episodic polyuria, and arthralgia. Patient 1's symptoms were in

In commercial aviation, fatigue is defined as a physiological state of reduced mental or physical performance capability resulting from sleep loss, extended wakefulness, circadian phase, and/or workload. The International Civil Aviation Organisation mandates that responsibility for fatigue risk management is shared between airline management, pilots, and support staff. However, to date, the majority of research relating to fatigue mitigations in long range operations has focused on the mitigations required or recommended by regulators and operators. Little research attention has been paid to t

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous pneumothorax (PTX) is a diagnostic challenge in aviators given the common occurrence of musculoskeletal pain after flight and notorious underreporting of symptoms of other diseases in this group.CASE REPORT: A 24-yr-old active duty F/A-18 Weapon Systems Officer performed an anti-G straining maneuver (AGSM) in response to a 6.5-g warm-up turn during a training flight at 16,000 ft (4876.8 m) above sea level. He immediately developed right-sided thoracic back pain. The flight was terminated, he landed, and the pain improved. Over the next 5 d, he noticed the insidious deve

Many animals, modern aircraft, and underwater vehicles use fusiform, streamlined body shapes that reduce fluid dynamic drag to achieve fast and effective locomotion in air and water. Similarly, numerous small terrestrial animals move through cluttered terrain where three-dimensional, multi-component obstacles like grass, shrubs, vines, and leaf litter also resist motion, but it is unknown whether their body shape plays a major role in traversal. Few ground vehicles or terrestrial robots have used body shape to more effectively traverse environments such as cluttered terrain. Here, we challenge

Control of rabies in mesocarnivore reservoirs through oral rabies vaccination (ORV) requires an effective vaccine bait. Oral rabies vaccine performance in the field may be affected by a variety of factors, including vaccine bait density and distribution pattern, habitat, target species population density, and the availability of competing foods. A field study in which these covariates were restricted as much as possible was conducted along the international border of the state of Maine (ME), USA, and the province of New Brunswick (NB), Canada, to compare the performance of two oral rabies vacc

BACKGROUND: Recent air travel recommendations suggest patients with precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PCPH) in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class 3 and 4 should have in-flight oxygen without the need for pre-flight testing. However it remains unclear as to how best to determine patients fitness to fly.
METHODS: This study (i) investigates the effect of hypoxic challenge testing (HCT) on the arterial oxygen levels in a cohort of 36 patients with PCPH and (ii) compares the relative frequency with which FC and HCT predict the requirement for in-flight oxygen.
RESULTS: The deg

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the risks of urgent air-medical transport used in regionalized health care systems. We sought to determine the incidence of in-transit critical events and identify factors associated with these events.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study using clinical and administrative data. We included all adults undergoing urgent air-medical transport in the Canadian province of Ontario between Jan. 1, 2004, and May 31, 2006. The primary outcome was in-transit critical events, which we defined as death, major resuscitative procedure, hemod

INTRODUCTION: We hypothesized that repeated respiratory straining maneuvers (repeated SM) designed to elevate arterial BPs (arterial baroreceptor loading) would acutely increase baroreflex responses.
METHODS: We tested this hypothesis by measuring cardiac baroreflex responses to carotid baroreceptor stimulation (neck pressures), and changes in heart rate and diastolic BP after reductions in BP induced by a 15-s Valsalva maneuver in 10 female and 10 male subjects at 1, 3, 6, and 24 h after performing repeated SM. Baroreflex responses were also measured in each subject at 1, 3, 6, and 24 h at t

INTRODUCTION: The literature contains a paucity of information on female tolerance to high sustained acceleration. With women now flying high-performance aircraft, gender-specific factors that may affect female acceleration tolerance have become increasingly important. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how menstrual state and physical condition affect acceleration tolerance. We hypothesized the menstrual cycle would have no effect on acceleration tolerance and that a positive correlation would exist between physical fitness level and tolerance to high sustained acceleration.

BACKGROUND: Ambulance service blood transfusion is an area of rapid development. In New South Wales, Australia, the blood products carried by ambulance medical teams are often the first available to patients with critical bleeding. In addition to the blood products routinely carried by these teams, the Service created and implemented a method of initiating large-volume, mixed-product transfusions using existing blood banks: the Retrieval Transfusion Procedure (RTP). This article describes the trends and characteristics of New South Wales Ambulance RTP activations.

OBJECTIVE: Otic barotrauma is common among air travellers and can cause severe otalgia, perforation of the tympanic membrane and hearing loss. Many prevention measures exist, with varying evidence to support their use. There are no data to establish if air travellers are aware of them or indeed use them. We aimed to establish air travellers' knowledge of such prevention measures.
METHODS: We surveyed air travellers at two UK airports by means of a questionnaire. Answers to the questionnaire were collected over a two-week period.
RESULTS: Overall, 179 air travellers with a mean age of 28 year

INTRODUCTION: Successful military aviation operations depend on maintaining continuous day-night operations. Stimulants are easy to use and popular for sustaining performance because their utility is not dependent upon environmental or scheduling modifications. Dextroamphetamine is authorized for use by the aircrews of all U.S. military services, but its potential for abuse and subsequent addiction is of aeromedical concern. Finding an alternative stimulant, such as modafinil, that displays a low affinity for dopamine uptake binding sites would prove extremely beneficial. This study sought to

INTRODUCTION: Exposures to natural and simulated altitudes entail reduced oxygen availability and thus hypoxia. Depending on the level of hypoxia, the duration of exposure, the individual susceptibility, and preexisting diseases, health problems of variable severity may arise. Although millions of people are regularly or occasionally performing mountain sport activities, are transported by airplanes, and are more and more frequently exposed to short-term hypoxia in athletic training facilities or at their workplace, e.g., with fire control systems, there is no clear consensus on the level of h

Chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, and sister chromatid exchanges have been analysed in human peripheral lymphocytes of 18 Concorde pilots and 10 controls. There was an eightfold significant increase of dicentric chromosomes in the Concorde group. The yield of micronuclei was also significantly elevated. Sister chromatid exchanges in the Concorde group did not differ from the control. Comparing the results to flight personnel from subsonic routes, the dicentric yield was higher in personnel from supersonic crews but the difference was not statistically significant. The overdispersion of dic

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the combined effects of noise and vibration. In a population of aeronautical workers diagnosed with vibroacoustic disease (VAD), a large incidence of malignancy was detected. These workers were exposed to large pressure amplitude (LPA) (> or = 90 dB SPL) noise, with energy content concentrated within the low frequency (LF) bands (< or = 500 Hz) and whole-body vibration (WBV). To our knowledge, there are no studies conducted in humans or animals that address the issue of the potential genotoxic effects of vibration combined with noise. In the pre
