Percutaneous Image-Guided Ablation of Renal Cancer: Traditional and Emerging Indications, Energy Sources, Techniques, and Future Developments.

Percutaneous image-guided ablation (IGA) has emerged as an established alternative to surgical management for small renal masses. This comprehensive review examines traditional and emerging indications, energy sources, techniques, and future developments in IGA for renal cancer treatment. Traditionally, IGA has been indicated for frail or comorbid patients, those with solitary kidneys or chronic kidney disease, and those with histologically proven renal cell carcinomas less than 4 cm in size. Recent evidence supports expanding these indications to include T1b or T2 tumours and hereditary or re

Efficacy and safety between radiofrequency ablation and types of cryoablation catheters for atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia: A Network Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) is the most common supraventricular tachycardia referred for ablation. Periprocedural conduction system damage was a primary concern during AVNRT ablation. This study aimed to assess the incidence of permanent atrioventricular (AV) block and the success rate associated with different types of catheters in slow pathway ablation. METHOD: A literature search was performed to identify studies that compared various techniques, including types of radiofrequency ablation (irrigated and nonirrigated) and different sizes of catheter ti

Does cryotherapy decrease the local recurrence rate in the treatment of an aneurysmal bone cyst? A comparative assessment.

Curettage with or without the use of adjuvants is the standard of care in the treatment of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). Historically, our approach combined curettage, high-speed burr drilling, and cryoablation. However, treatments varied based on age, tumor location, and surgeon preference. We asked: (1) Does cryoablation in addition to curettage and burr drilling decrease the local recurrence rates? (2) Are there any risk factors for the local recurrence rate? (3) Does cryoablation improve postsurgical functional outcomes in these patients? Patients treated for an ABC, between January 2006

Image-guided percutaneous cryoablation of a solitary subpleural lung metastasis from breast cancer.

This case presents CT-guided percutaneous cryoablation as a treatment option in a patient with oligometastatic breast cancer who previously had received standard-of-care treatment for metastatic breast cancer. Before cryoablation, the patient received two systemic lines of therapy, several surgeries and radiotherapy for oligometastatic disease. The cryoablation was performed in a single 7 mm subpleural oligometastatic lesion 42 months after diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. It was performed without complications, and the patient experienced no complaints or discomfort after the procedure.

Risk of persistent air leaks following percutaneous cryoablation and microwave ablation of peripheral lung tumors.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the incidence of persistent air leak (PAL) following cryoablation vs MWA of lung tumors when the ablation zone includes the pleura. METHODS: This bi-institutional retrospective cohort study evaluated consecutive peripheral lung tumors treated with cryoablation or MWA from 2006 to 2021. PAL was defined as an air leak for more than 24 h after chest tube placement or an enlarging postprocedural pneumothorax requiring chest tube placement. The pleural area included by the ablation zone was quantified on CT using semi-automated segmentation. PAL incidence was compared betwee

Lateral Orbitotomy Cryo-Assisted Removal of Orbital Cavernous Hemangiomas: Case Report and Technical Hints.

Orbital cavernous hemangiomas are the most common adult benign vascular orbital neoformation, representing 5%-15% of all orbital masses, and may involve the extraconal or intraconal space.1 According to the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies, orbital cavernous hemangiomas should be classified as low-flow nondistensible venous malformations and are characterized by slow growth, generally 0.2 cm3/year.2,3 For these characteristics, complete surgical resection is necessary for symptomatic patients or in case of significant volumetric increase in its size.4Video 1 demonstrat

Clinical outcome of a single procedure cryoballoon ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation: A real-world multicenter experience in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has been growing as an alternative technique, not only in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) but also in persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Cryoballoon ablation has demonstrated encouraging acute and mid-term results. However, data on long-term follow-up of CB-based PVI are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine efficacy, safety, and long-term outcomes of CBA in PAF and persistent AF in four Portuguese centers. METHODS: All patients that were treated with the cryoballoon catheter according to routine

Right superior pulmonary vein parameter determined by three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography is an independent predictor of the outcome after cryoballoon isolation of the pulmonary veins.

BACKGROUND: A direct comparison of three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3DTEE) and cardiac computed tomography imaging has demonstrated good inter-technique agreement for the following pulmonary vein (PV) parameters: the ostium area of the right superior PV (RSPV) and its major (a) and minor axis (b) diameters, the left lateral ridge and the minor axis (b) diameter of the left superior PV. Herein, under investigation, was the predictive value of these parameters for arrhythmia recurrence (AR) after PV isolation with the 28 mm second generation cryoballoon (CBG2). METHODS: One h

Association of left atrial wall thickness with recurrence after cryoballoon ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Transmural injury plays a role in successful atrial fibrillation ablation. The effect of left atrial wall thickness (LAWT) on the efficacy of radiofrequency ablation has been identified, but data on the relationship between LAWT and cryoballoon for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) are lacking. We aim to explore the relationship between LAWT and recurrence after cryoballoon ablation (CBA). METHODS: We studied 364 patients (mean age 62 years) with PAF who underwent a second-generation CBA and pre-procedure cardiac CTA. LAWT and left atrial volume index (LAVI) were obtained based
