A Dual-Task Synergy-Driven Generalization Framework for Pancreatic Cancer Segmentation in CT Scans.

Pancreatic cancer, characterized by its notable prevalence and mortality rates, demands accurate lesion delineation for effective diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. The generalizability of extant methods is frequently compromised due to the pronounced variability in imaging and the heterogeneous characteristics of pancreatic lesions, which may mimic normal tissues and exhibit significant inter-patient variability. Thus, we propose a generalization framework that synergizes pixel-level classification and regression tasks, to accurately delineate lesions and improve model stability. This f

Learning-based Pulmonary Disease Detection Using Weak Labels for Volume Sweep Lung Ultrasound Imaging.

Pulmonary disease is prevalent worldwide resulting in significant morbidity and mortality, but most of the world lacks accessible medical imaging for its assessment. Lung ultrasound is a highly accurate and relatively inexpensive tool for diagnosing pulmonary illness, but its deployment is limited by a lack of trained sonographers. Volume sweep imaging (VSI) of the lung circumvents the problem by shifting image acquisition to individuals with minimal medical and ultrasound background by using standardized ultrasound probe sweeps of the chest (recorded as cine loops) based on external body land

Topological GCN Guided Improved Conformer for Detection of Hip Landmarks From Ultrasound Images.

The B-mode ultrasound based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has shown its effectiveness for diagnosis of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) in infants within 6 months. Hip landmark detection is a feasible way for the CAD of DDH according to the Graf's method. However, existing landmark detection algorithms mainly focus on designing special models to capture the features from hip ultrasound images, but generally ignore the important spatial relations among different landmarks. To this end, a novel weakly supervised learning-based algorithm, the Topological Graph Convolutional Network (TGCN

Focused active learning for histopathological image classification.

Active Learning (AL) has the potential to solve a major problem of digital pathology: the efficient acquisition of labeled data for machine learning algorithms. However, existing AL methods often struggle in realistic settings with artifacts, ambiguities, and class imbalances, as commonly seen in the medical field. The lack of precise uncertainty estimations leads to the acquisition of images with a low informative value. To address these challenges, we propose Focused Active Learning (FocAL), which combines a Bayesian Neural Network with Out-of-Distribution detection to estimate different unc

Role of inter- and extra-lesion tissue, transfer learning, and fine-tuning in the robust classification of breast lesions.

Accurate and unbiased classification of breast lesions is pivotal for early diagnosis and treatment, and a deep learning approach can effectively represent and utilize the digital content of images for more precise medical image analysis. Breast ultrasound imaging is useful for detecting and distinguishing benign masses from malignant masses. Based on the different ways in which benign and malignant tumors affect neighboring tissues, i.e., the pattern of growth and border irregularities, the penetration degree of the adjacent tissue, and tissue-level changes, we investigated the relationship b

Improvement of diagnostic performance of hyperacute ischemic stroke in head CT using an image-based noise reduction technique with non-black-boxed process.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate whether an image-based noise reduction (INR) technique with a conventional rule-based algorithm involving no black-boxed processes can outperform an existing hybrid-type iterative reconstruction (HIR) technique, when applied to brain CT images for diagnosis of early CT signs, which generally exhibit low-contrast lesions that are difficult to detect. METHODS: The subjects comprised 27 patients having infarctions within 4.5 h of onset and 27 patients with no change in brain parenchyma. Images with thicknesses of 5 mm and 0.625 mm were reconstructed by HIR

A robust classification of acute lymphocytic leukemia-based microscopic images with supervised Hilbert-Huang transform.

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant condition characterized by the development of blast cells in the bone marrow and their quick dissemination into the bloodstream. It primarily affects children and individuals over the age of 60. Manual blood testing, which has been around for a long time, may be slow. The likelihood of recognizing ALL in its early stages was increased by automating the diagnosis. This research developed an improved criterion for classifying ALL microscopic images into two categories: normal images and blast images. First, to save processing time, innovative image

The evaluation of the reduction of radiation dose via deep learning-based reconstruction for cadaveric human lung CT images.

To compare the quality of CT images of the lung reconstructed using deep learning-based reconstruction (True Fidelity Image: TFI ™; GE Healthcare) to filtered back projection (FBP), and to determine the minimum tube current-time product in TFI without compromising image quality. Four cadaveric human lungs were scanned on CT at 120 kVp and different tube current-time products (10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 175 mAs) and reconstructed with TFI and FBP. Two image evaluations were performed by three independent radiologists. In the first experiment, using the same tube current-time product, a side-by-si

Hessian-MRLoG: Hessian information and multi-scale reverse LoG filter for pulmonary nodule detection.

Computer-aided detection (CADe) of pulmonary nodules is an effective approach for early detection of lung cancer. However, due to the low contrast of lung computed tomography (CT) images, the interference of blood vessels and classifications, CADe has the problems of low detection rate and high false-positive rate (FPR). To solve these problems, a novel method using Hessian information and multi-scale reverse Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) (Hessian-MRLoG) is proposed and developed in this work. Also, since the intensity distribution of the LoG operator and the lung nodule in CT images are inconsi

Artificial intelligence for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, we review the current state of artificial intelligence applications in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and provide insight on challenges as well as strategies for bringing these algorithms to the bedside. RECENT FINDINGS: In the past few years, there has been a dramatic shift from machine learning approaches based on feature extraction to 'deep' convolutional neural networks for artificial intelligence applications. Several artificial intelligence for ROP approaches have demonstrated adequate proof-of-concept performance in research studies. The next steps

Fully Convolutional Networks for Monocular Retinal Depth Estimation and Optic Disc-Cup Segmentation.

Glaucoma is a serious ocular disorder for which the screening and diagnosis are carried out by the examination of the optic nerve head (ONH). The color fundus image (CFI) is the most common modality used for ocular screening. In CFI, the central region which is the optic disc and the optic cup region within the disc are examined to determine one of the important cues for glaucoma diagnosis called the optic cup-to-disc ratio (CDR). CDR calculation requires accurate segmentation of optic disc and cup. Another important cue for glaucoma progression is the variation of depth in ONH region. In this

DeepPap: Deep Convolutional Networks for Cervical Cell Classification.

Automation-assisted cervical screening via Pap smear or liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a highly effective cell imaging based cancer detection tool, where cells are partitioned into "abnormal" and "normal" categories. However, the success of most traditional classification methods relies on the presence of accurate cell segmentations. Despite sixty years of research in this field, accurate segmentation remains a challenge in the presence of cell clusters and pathologies. Moreover, previous classification methods are only built upon the extraction of hand-crafted features, such as morphology and

Pleura detection in chest computed tomography with application for nodule detection.

This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for detecting pleural objects that come in contact with a nodule. To reduce complexity, the algorithm recursively performed a curve-fitting method on each slice of the volume of interest to locate the object between the parietal and visceral pleurae surfaces and measured the quality of the fitting curve. When a nodule contacted the surfaces of the chest wall or diaphragm, they were automatically separated using the fitting curve. The algorithm was performed on 864 slices of 40 nodules. The segmentation results were visually inspected by a consensus of

Curvature analysis of femoral shaft in total knee arthroplasty patient and control group.

For some patients with joint illnesses such as rheumarthritis or varus deformity, the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are performed. However, when inserting metal cutting guide for the procedures, due to the femoral shaft bowing, complications such as the cortex of the femoral shaft damages or secondary fractures can be caused. If the central coordinate value of the femoral shaft is known, the metal cutting guide could be inserted into the anatomical center, so such complications can be prevented. In this study, CT images of femoral shafts of 10 individuals in the experiment group who
