Acute Spinal Cord Injury in the Setting of C6 Pathologic Fracture Secondary to Metastatic Paraganglioma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Paragangliomas (PG) are rare extra-adrenal neuroendocrine tumors that arise from neural crest-derived chromaffin cells. Metastatic involvement of the spine, particularly in the cervical region, is exceptionally uncommon. Here, we present an exceedingly rare case of a 25-year-old male with metastatic spread from a recurrent functional aortocaval paraganglioma to the cervical spine, ultimately leading to a pathological fracture, acute spinal cord injury, and neurogenic shock requiring urgent intervention.

Catecholamine-secreting adrenal lipomatous ganglioneuroma: A case study.

Ganglioneuroma, which arise from neural crest cells, typically occurs in adolescents and young adults. Most ganglioneuromas are clinically asymptomatic and hormonally silent, therefore may be diagnosed incidentally during imaging studies. Ganglioneuroma containing fat (lipomatous ganglioneuroma) is a rare variant of ganglioneuroma that is histologically characterized by a mature adipocytic component admixed with a conventional ganglioneuroma. Herein, we report the case of adrenal lipomatous ganglioneuroma with elevated urinary catecholamine level.

Heterotopic adrenal gland in undescendent testis - Case report.

Heterotopic adrenal cortex is usually found in the kidney, retroperitoneum and spermatic cord. The adrenal gland has a dual embryonic origin: the cortex arises from the mesoderm and the medulla from ectoderm of the neural crest. Adrenal cortex and gonads both arise from genital ridge, because of that adrenal tissue with descending gonads may migrate in early embryonic period. We report a case of adrenal rest in upper pole of testes.

Selective loss of cholinergic sudomotor fibers causes anhidrosis in Ross syndrome.

Ross syndrome consists of segmental hyperhidrosis with widespread anhidrosis, Adie syndrome, and areflexia. The cause of this disorder is unknown. Selective degeneration of cholinergic fibers or of neural crest-derived structures has been suggested. We present clinical and skin biopsy data of 4 patients, providing evidence of reduced cholinergic sweat gland innervation in hypohidrotic skin by morphometric analysis. These findings indicate a selective degenerative process of the cholinergic sudomotor neurons.

The "neuro" of neuroblastoma: Neuroblastoma as a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer derived from cells of neural crest origin. The hallmarks of its enigmatic character include its propensity for spontaneous regression under some circumstances and its association with paraneoplastic opsoclonus, myoclonus, and ataxia. The neurodevelopmental underpinnings of its origins may provide important clues for development of novel therapeutic and preventive agents for this frequently fatal malignancy and for the associated paraneoplastic syndromes. Ann Neurol 2016;80:13-23.

Multiple schwannomas of the sciatic nerve.

Schwannomas are rare benign tumours of nerve sheath cells of neural crest origin. Often these tumours are solitary and encapsulated. Multiple schwannomas can arise from the peripheral nervous system including cranial nerves, spinal roots, the brachial and lumbar-sacral plexus or major peripheral nerves. We report an extremely rare case of schwannomatosis of the sciatic nerve in a young female and include a comprehensive literature review. Treatment options are discussed.

Shared and individual expression patterns of pluripotency genes in the developing chick embryo during neurulation and beyond.

The neural crest (NC) is a transient population of pluripotent-like, pleistopotent stem cells that emerges early in vertebrate development. These cells play a pivotal role in generating a diverse array of tissues, including the craniofacial bone and cartilage, the entire peripheral nervous system, melanocytes of the skin, certain cardiac structures, and chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla, among others. The stem cell potential of neural crest cells (NCCs) has long intrigued developmental biologists, as the NC originates post-gastrulation in the ectoderm, yet NCCs also give rise to derivati…

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications of Neural Regeneration Through Dental Pulp Stem Cells.

Neural injuries affecting both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) pose a great clinical challenge due to the neural tissue's limited self-regenerative capacity. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs), derived from the neural crest and easily obtained from extracted teeth, exhibit considerable potential for neural regeneration. This potential is attributed to their ability to directly differentiate into various neuronal cell types, paracrine effects, and interactions with biomaterial scaffolds. In this review, we reviewed the molecular mechanisms by which hDPSCs…

Neurofibromatosis and malignant childhood cancers: a survey in Italy, 1970-83.

Neural tumors, Wilms' tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma and several types of leukemia have been previously described in association with neurofibromatosis (NF). In a nation-wide collection of cases in Italy, 15 children (0-14 years of age) with NF and cancer or leukemia were identified; 13 of them had been diagnosed with cancer between 1976-83. The expected number of children with cancer and NF in 1976-83 was 4.48. The distribution of tumor types was different from that found in the general population, with a higher proportion of tumors of neural crest origin as well as soft tissue sarcomas. In 7/15 the…

A rare entity: Ganglioneuroma of the prostate.

Ganglioneuromas are benign tumors arising from the neural crest. Histologically, they are composed of mature Schwann cells and ganglion cells admixed with fibrous tissue. While they frequently are seen in the abdomen and mediastinum, rare reports have highlighted their occurrences in the genitourinary system. The only prior reported prostatic ganglioneuroma arose in a patient with a history of neurofibromatosis type 1. In this report, we highlight the first reported prostatic ganglioneuroma without a known genetic linkage.

Bilateral radial hemimelia and multiple malformations in a kitten.

Hemimelia is a congenital disease of complete or partial absence of one or more bones. The most important hypothesis is that radial agenesis is a consequence of neural crest injury. Treatment selection depends on the degree of the deformity and the reduction of limb function. This report describes a case of bilateral radial hemimelia and multiple malformations in a kitten aged 2 months treated conservatively with splint bandage, until bone maturity. The re-evaluation was performed 4 years later.

Regional odontodysplasia in epidermal nevus syndrome.

Epidermal nevus syndrome is defined as a combination of nevoid skin alterations, epileptic seizures, and psychomotoric retardation. Involvement of other organs, especially the eyes, may also occur, but is not obligatory. The present report is concerned with a case that combined regional odontodysplasia with nevoid skin alterations in the overlying skin area of the face. This observation suggests that odontodysplasia may be the result of aberrations in the development and migration of cells of the neural crest occurring early in embryonic life.

Biomarkers of the one-carbon pathway in association with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Homocysteine is an intermediate of the one-carbon (1-C) pathway and increased concentrations have been related to neural crest-related congenital anomalies. The neural crest and the 1-C pathway might be involved also in the etiology of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). In 22 CDH and 28 control newborns and their mothers, general characteristics were obtained by standardized questionnaires. The 1-C pathway intermediates total homocysteine (tHcy), S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) were determined in cord blood. Correlations between maternal and newborn factors and…

Fibronectin and Integrin α5 play overlapping and independent roles in regulating the development of pharyngeal endoderm and cartilage.

Craniofacial skeletal elements are derived from cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs), which migrate along discrete paths and populate distinct pharyngeal arches, structures that are separated by the neighboring endodermal pouches (EPs). Interactions between the CNCCs and the endoderm are critical for proper craniofacial development. In zebrafish, integrin α5 (Itga5) functions in the endoderm to regulate formation of specifically the first EP (EP1) and the development of the hyoid cartilage. Here we show that fibronectin (Fn), a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), is also required …

PAX Genes in Cardiovascular Development.

The mammalian heart is a four-chambered organ with systemic and pulmonary circulations to deliver oxygenated blood to the body, and a tightly regulated genetic network exists to shape normal development of the heart and its associated major arteries. A key process during cardiovascular morphogenesis is the septation of the outflow tract which initially forms as a single vessel before separating into the aorta and pulmonary trunk. The outflow tract connects to the aortic arch arteries which are derived from the pharyngeal arch arteries. Congenital heart defects are a major cause of death and mo
