OBJECTIVE: To study the gene mutation of collagen, type I, alpha 1 (COL1A1) associated with the clinical characterization of a Chinese family with type I osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing and restriction endonuclaese analysis were used to check all the members in the family with OI and 50 normal control people for detecting the mutation of COL1A1 gene.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of distraction osteogenesis (DO) when applied to closure of a hard palate cleft in dogs.
METHODS: A midline hard palate cleft was created in 10 mature dogs. Two were controls and had no distraction; the other 8 dogs underwent osteotomies with installation of customized DO devices to the hard palate. The results of intramedullary rodding of 50 femoral and 25 tibial segments were analyzed retrospectively. The techniques of femoral rodding included single Rush rodding, dual Rush rodding and Sheffield telescoping rodding. Single Rush rods or Sheffield rods were used in the tibia. We report a unique case of unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia in a young Chinese girl with osteogenesis imperfecta type IV. Magnetic resonance imaging showed mild basilar invagination and impression. Clinical studies with bisphosphonates in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) show an increase in BMD and a decrease in fracture rate. Bone strength in children with OI is not only influenced by changes in BMD but also by changes in collagen I structure of the organic bone matrix. Two cases of lengthening of metatarsals by distraction osteogenesis are reported. One of these cases is an acquired deformity of the first metatarsal; the other is a congenital short fourth metatarsal. By following the principles set forth by Ilizarov, it was possible to lengthen the metatarsal bones and surrounding soft tissues without open lengthening of tendons or secondary bone grafting of the distraction gap. We believe this method is an improvement over previously described methods of metatarsal lengthening.
