The Interpupillary Distance Differs Between Ethnicities and Associates with Horizontal Strabismus Patterns: Evidence from a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: The interpupillary distance is a measure of the width of the orbit and is important for spectacle design and proper head-mounted displays in virtual reality. Extreme interpupillary distances may predispose to horizontal strabismus. The interpupillary distance is thought to differ between ethnicities, but global data on this parameter have not been systematically explored, mapped and compared. METHODOLOGY: We performed a systematic review that compiled 243 studies reporting the interpupillary distance and mapped the data geographically. We then compared the regional distribution of th…

Ocular Alignment and Strabismus-Related Findings Associated with Low-Dose Atropine for Myopia Control in Children: A Structured Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Low-dose atropine eye drops are widely used to slow myopia progression in children, but by reducing accommodation they may affect near ocular alignment and binocular visual function. Evidence on ocular alignment and strabismus-related findings remains insufficiently synthesized. This review examined low-dose atropine for pediatric myopia control in relation to ocular alignment and strabismus-related findings. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science Core Collection were searched from inception to 16 April 2026. English-language studies addressing low-dose atropine, myo…

Case Report: From imaging to genetics: a case of congenital restrictive strabismus with SEOM expands the 22q11.2 duplication syndrome phenotype.

This study presents a case of restrictive strabismus with ipsilateral enophthalmos secondary to a supernumerary extraocular muscle (SEOM). Orbital MRI and posterior segment OCT provided direct imaging evidence that delineated the posterior origin of the SEOM and its mechanical traction on the globe, while also revealing concomitant hypoplasia of the medial and lateral rectus muscles. These findings together elucidate the mechanical basis of both ocular motility restriction and enophthalmos in this case. Genetic analysis revealed a pathogenic duplication in the 22q11.21 region, which-to our kno…

Prevalence and etiology of strabismus in Down syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis with a focus on ethnic differences in the esotropia/exotropia ratio.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine the prevalence of strabismus and the esotropia/exotropia ratio in Down syndrome. Wide ranges of an increased strabismus prevalence have been reported and it is unclear by how much esotropia exceeds exotropia in people with Down syndrome. METHODS: We compiled in a systematic review and meta-analysis results of over 100 studies that report the strabismus prevalence and ratio of esotropia/exotropia in cohorts of Down syndrome. We calculated the pooled global prevalence and established the geographical distribution of the strabismus prevalence and the esotropia/exo…

The Infratrochlear Nerve Block Reduces the Incidence of Postoperative Nausea Vomiting in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Strabismus Surgery-A Retrospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Strabismus surgery in pediatric patients is associated with a high incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Patients showing pain are more prone to develop PONV. As the infratrochlear nerve (ITN) block can ameliorate perioperative pain following strabismus surgery, we hypothesized that ITN block may influence PONV in pediatric patients undergoing strabismus surgery. Methods: The medical charts of pediatric patients older than 2 years with exotropia who underwent strabismus surgery under general anesthesia, with or without ITN block, were reviewed retrospect…

Increasing muscle strength as a treatment for strabismus: sustained release of insulin-like growth factor-1 in rabbit extraocular muscle.

PURPOSE: Currently, no drug treatment is available for strengthening underacting extraocular muscles (EOM) in strabismus. We showed previously that single injections of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) result in significant but short-term increases in muscle force generation. This study examined the effects of sustained release of IGF-1 on force generation in rabbit superior rectus muscles. METHODS: In adult rabbits, slow-release pellets containing IGF-1 were implanted on the global side of one superior rectus muscle. After 1 week, or 1, 2, 3, or 6 months, treated and control muscles were e…
