Earliest evidence of modern human life history in North African early Homo sapiens.

Recent developmental studies demonstrate that early fossil hominins possessed shorter growth periods than living humans, implying disparate life histories. Analyses of incremental features in teeth provide an accurate means of assessing the age at death of developing dentitions, facilitating direct comparisons with fossil and modern humans. It is currently unknown when and where the prolonged modern human developmental condition originated. Here, an application of x-ray synchrotron microtomography reveals that an early Homo sapiens juvenile from Morocco dated at 160,000 years before present di

Effect of luxation injuries on permanent teeth.

Trauma to the supporting tissues of the teeth are among the most common dental injuries, leading to such complications as pulp canal obliteration, necrosis and root resorption. The aim of this investigation was to study the outcome for young permanent teeth subjected to luxation injuries. From 108 dental records 171 teeth with injuries to the supporting tissue were selected. The material comprised 130 subluxated, 15 extruded, 9 intruded, 15 exarticulated and 6 laterally luxated teeth in children aged 6-19 years. Apart from luxation, 59 teeth (35%) had additional crown and root fractures. 65% o

Radiographic Documentation of Implant-Supported Rehabilitation Following Endodontic Failure of a Mandibular First Molar: A Case Report.

Endodontic failure is a common cause of tooth loss and frequently requires extraction when persistent infection and associated pathology compromise long-term prognosis. Dental implants provide a predictable treatment option for replacing missing teeth while restoring function and esthetics. This case report describes the radiographic documentation of implant-supported rehabilitation following endodontic failure of a mandibular first molar in a 44-year-old female patient. Initial radiographic evaluation revealed a previously endodontically treated mandibular right first molar (tooth #30) associ

Restorative artificial intelligence-driven implant dentistry for immediate implant placement with an interim crown: A clinical report.

Immediate implant placement into the extraction socket based on a restoratively driven approach poses challenges which might compromise the delivery of an immediate interim restoration on the day of surgery. The fabricated digital design of the interim restoration may require modification before delivery and may not maintain the planned form to support the gingival architecture for the future prosthetic volume for the emergence profile. This report demonstrates how to utilize the artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted segmentation of bone and tooth to enhance restoratively driven planning for i

Differential expression of cxcl-14 during eruptive movement of rat molar germs.

Tooth eruption at the early postnatal period is strictly controlled by the molecules secreted mainly from follicular tissues, which recruit monocytes for osteoclast formation. In this study, it was hypothesized that different molecules can be expressed according to the stages of tooth eruption. Rat molar germs together with follicles were extracted and DD-PCR was performed from the root formation stage 2nd molars germs (after eruptive movement) and cap stage 3rd molar germs (before movement) at postnatal day 9. Cxcl-14, a potent chemoattractant, was detected as one of the differentially expres

Clinical study of dens evaginatus cases with pulpal involvement.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the incidence, clinical findings, diagnosis and treatment of evaginated teeth with pulpal involvement. Five hundred and three cases requiring endodontically treated premolars were studied at Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital. We observed 23 (4.6%) evaginated teeth with pulpal involvement out of the 503 samples studied here. Of the 23 teeth, mandibular second premolars comprise the largest portion. Clinically, all tubercles of pulpally involved evaginated teeth had been worn down by attrition and all these teeth showed negative response in

The effects of a four-fold increased orthodontic force magnitude on tooth movement and root resorptions. An intra-individual study in adolescents.

This clinical and histological study was designed as an intra-individual study to investigate the effect on tooth movements and adverse tissue reactions (root resorption) when a fixed orthodontic appliance was activated with a controlled, continuous force of 50 cN (approximately equal to 50 g) or with a four-fold larger force (200 cN approximately equal to 200 g). The first premolar on both sides of the maxilla in eight individuals, six boys and two girls (mean age 13.0 years), was moved buccally during 7 weeks with 50 cN and 200 cN alternately on the right or left size. During the first week

A case of dental implant treatment for occlusal reconstruction in a congenital acute myeloid leukemia survivor.

PATIENTS: The patient was an 11-year-old boy with a medical history of congenital acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He received a series of treatments between 1 and 8 months of age, including chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Although the permanent incisors had erupted, both crown and root formation were incomplete. No tooth buds were observed for the remaining permanent teeth. The deciduous teeth were still present; however, their roots were shortened and showed mobility. At 18 years of age, growth of the upper and lower jaws had ceased; therefo

Trauma quiz. Terribly troublesome, trauma teeth.

Unfortunately, we come across many traumatised teeth during our practising career. Some of these traumatic injuries are rather simple to treat whereas others provide us with a real challenge. It is absolutely essential that the diagnosis of the injury be known before any treatment is attempted. When it comes to trauma, however, defining the exact form of treatment can often be very difficult. In this paper I will discuss some of the cases that I have managed and leave it up to YOU to decide whether my treatment has been correct, incorrect or whether there is some other form of treatment that w

Unusual role in occlusion and mastication of a horizontal positioned erupted mandibular third molar: a rare case.

Lower third molars are frequently extracted due to pathologies of the dental follicle, pericoronitis, advanced carious lesions, orthodontic reasons (risk of anterior tooth crowding) or causing periodontal or carious lesions in the distal area of the second molar. The case presented here is of a male patient that came to our Clinic experiencing pain in the distal area of one of his old bridges. The clinical examination revealed a malpositioned, but unusually functional third molar; it is a very rare situation for an initially impacted third molar to erupt in an almost horizontal position and no

Distorted Patterns of Dentinogenesis and Eruption in Msx2 Null Mutants: Involvement of Sost/Sclerostin.

The muscle segment homeogenes Msx1 and Msx2 play a major role in tooth and bone formation. Periodontal osteoclast impairment also occurs in Msx2 null mutant mice, which is restored by overexpression of the receptor activator of NF-κB targeted in osteoclast lineage. Here, we investigated the role of Msx2 in dentinogenesis. Experiments were performed on Msx2(-/-) mice and the MDPC-23 odontoblastic cell line. After Msx2 gene silencing, real-time quantitative RT-PCR data showed significant overexpression of Runx2, Bglap, Dspp, and Alpl. Of three inhibitors of Wnt/β-catenin signaling (Dkk1, SostDc1

18-year follow-up of dens invaginatus: retrograde endodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental anomaly that occurs during odontogenesis, with a higher prevalence in the Caucasian race and no significant sex predilection; it can be bilateral. This anomaly occurs in approximately 1.26% of the teeth, and the maxillary lateral incisor is most often affected. METHODS: This case report describes a female patient with dens invaginatus in the maxillary right conoid lateral incisor. The patient presented to Araçatuba School of Dentistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1995 with an acute periapical abscess in the palat

Diagnosis and Treatment of Odontogenic Cutaneous Sinus Tracts in an 11-Year-Old Boy: A Case Report.

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts (OCSTs) are generally primarily misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated by virtue of their rarity and the absence of dental symptoms. Accurate diagnosis and treatment and the elimination of the source of infection can reduce the incidence of complications and relieve the pain of the patient. In this case report, we present the case of an 11-year-old patient with an apparent abscess but an unobvious draining sinus tract in his left cheek. Intraorally, a glass-ionomer-cement filling on the occlusal surface of the left mandibular first molar (tooth 36) was noted

Correlation between cortical plate proximity and apical root resorption.

Root resorption is one of the most common iatrogenic sequelae of orthodontic treatment. Recently, root contact with the labial or palatal cortical plate at root apex level during orthodontic tooth movement was reported to be related to root resorption, and dentofacial morphology was suggested to predispose certain persons to root contact with the cortical plate. In this study, we constructed a best-fit straight line for the maxillary palatal cortical plate and set a line for the labial cortical plate from A point to Prosthion point in order to obtain measurements of proximity of root apices wi
