Hand recognition, the process of identifying or characterizing human hands in images or video streams, plays significant role in the biometrics, robotics, computer vision, and human-computer interaction. This technology relies on analyzing hand attributes such as shape, size, color, texture, and motion to perform tasks as gesture identification, hand tracking, and sign language interpretation. In particular, hand movement decoding from electromyography (EMG) signals has shown promise for understanding neuromuscular function and aiding in diagnosis and therapy for neuromuscular issues. Alterations in social functioning are commonly observed in youth at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis. Previous research has focused on perception and interpretation of social stimuli. Assessments of social behavior have been limited and have typically been conducted using time-consuming, manual, and not always reliable methods. The current study aimed to characterize patterns of head movements, a critical feature of nonverbal social behavior, to determine alterations among CHR individuals, using novel automated tools. A total of 87 CHR and 90 healthy control youth completed video-recorde

Apraxia is a common symptom in Alzheimer's disease (AD) that reduces autonomy and quality of life. However, the neural basis underlying apraxia in AD, for example, reflected by functional connectivity (FC) alterations, remains unexplored. We investigated static and dynamic FC using resting-state functional imaging in 14 patients with biomarker-confirmed AD pathology and 14 matched healthy participants. FC was estimated as average (static) and short-term (dynamic) connectivity strengths between motor- and praxis-related functional networks. Recurring connectivity patterns were clustered into dy

Human movement, in its synergistic, functional, and stabilizing nature, necessitates a balance of muscle length and strength between the muscles surrounding a joint. This balance, known as muscle balance, ensures optimal joint function during movement. Using a bibliography that can be linked to indexed literature, this article has as its strength the correlative analysis between gestural repetitiveness in soccer, related to players' roles on the field on the playing field that result in dysfunctional postural frameworks with increased risk factors for lower extremity injuries. Soccer, characte

Stretchable optical fibers are emerging as a promising platform for wearable sensing applications, owing to their exceptional flexibility, high sensitivity, and inherent immunity to electromagnetic interference. Although current research primarily concentrates on conventional step-index configurations, microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with precisely engineered architectures offer unprecedented design flexibility and functional versatility. Nevertheless, the fabrication of such advanced fiber structures poses significant technical challenges. This study introduces a demonstration of an ela

PURPOSE: Middle ear surgery may benefit from robot-based assistance to hold micro-instruments or an endoscope. However, the surgical gesture performed by one hand may perturb surgeons accustomed to two-handed surgery. A robot-based holder may combine the benefits from endoscopic exposure and a two-handed technique. Furthermore, tremor suppression and accurate tool control might help the surgeon during critical surgical steps. The goal of this work was to study the safety of an otological robot-based assistant under clinical conditions in a limited series of patients.
METHODS: The RobOtol syst

Methods of post-concussion diagnosis are still under debate with regard to sensitivity, objectivity, reliability, and costs. Spontaneous displays of nonverbal hand movement behavior during interaction are indicative of psychopathology and are relatively simple to record and analyze. Increased continuous (irregular) body-focused hand movement activity in particular indicates psychopathologies that overlap in symptomatology with those of sport-related concussions (SRCs). We therefore hypothesized that the duration of "irregular," "on body," and "act on each other" hand movements is increased in

Extra-articular procedures for the improvement in rotational stability after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction have gained popularity in the last decade. This surgical gesture hoped to improve resistance to the high tensional forces affecting the ACL graft during cutting and pivoting movements of the lower extremity and eventually prevent ACL reconstruction failure. We performed this study to analyze the long-term results of patients undergoing ACL reconstruction using a nonanatomic double-bundle technique with an additional extra-articular augmentation. All the cases that underw

INTRODUCTION: Hirayama disease, a type of cervical flexion myelopathy, is a rare neurological disease characterized by muscular atrophy of the forearms and hands. Generally, the pathology is limited to the gray matter of the anterior horns in the lower cervical spinal cord. However, in rare cases the damage can spread to the white matter and present as long tract signs.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 30-year-old female whose onset presented as unilateral muscle atrophy of the right hand in her teens. Despite conservative treatment using a cervical collar, she developed prolonged bilateral

This study examined changes in speech motor control across a movement transition between sounds within a motor learning task in children with apraxia of speech (CAS) and typical development (TD). It was investigated whether oral articulator movement was refined with practice and whether practice gains generalized to words not included in the practice session. A total of 16 children (ages 5-6) with CAS (n = 8) and TD (n = 8) participated in this study. Novel and real word tokens were produced at three time points. Kinematic data was collected using facial motion tracking at each time point. Chi

Limb apraxia denotes a cognitive impairment of gesture production. Lesion studies in patients with stroke point towards distinct neural processing streams for limb imitation and object-pantomime within left parietal and temporal cortex, respectively. Despite its frequent occurrence as an early symptom in both, Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), neural correlates of limb apraxia within these patient groups remain unexplored. Using voxel-based morphometry and multiple regression models, associations between limb apraxia and gray matter (GM) volume

At least three research groups have reported that autism is diagnosed in up to 20% of children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS). However the degree of phenotypic overlap between VCFS-affected children with autism and those with idiopathic autism has not been established. The purpose of this study was to define and differentiate the behavioral phenotype of autism in samples of children with either (VCFS) or idiopathic autism. Five groups of children ages 5-15 were included in the between-group design. Parent report of autism behaviors (based on the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, ADI-

As Milton Hyland Erickson told us, "Each person is a unique individual. Hence, psychotherapy should be formulated to meet the uniqueness of the individual's needs, rather than tailoring the person to fit the Procrustean bed of a hypothetical theory of human behavior." Erickson's mastery and creative genius have invited clinicians to imitate and emulate his style of working and identify themselves as "Ericksonian." But what does it mean to be Ericksonian? Utilizing the microdynamics of trance induction, and the six "core competencies" Ericksonian therapy as the foundation, this paper notes how

INTRODUCTION: Automated, objective assessment of rehabilitation movement quality from three-dimensional skeleton recordings can support scalable and low-cost physiotherapy monitoring, but reported performance is often affected by subject leakage, inconsistent class-imbalance handling and non-comparable evaluation protocols.
METHODS: This study establishes a leakage-controlled, subject-independent benchmark on the publicly available IntelliRehabDS corpus. After removing 12 ambiguous-label files and 2 sequences shorter than 16 frames, 2,575 sequences from 29 adult and adolescent participants we
