The relationship between a less gender-stereotypical parenthood and alcohol-related care and death: a registry study of Swedish mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: In general men tend to drink more alcohol and experience more alcohol-related sickness, injuries and mortality than women. In th … first child together in 1978 (N = 49,120). A less gender-stereotypical parenthood was indicated by paternity leave for fathers (1978-1979) and full-time work for mothers (1980). The outcome was inpatient care and/or death caused by alcohol psychosis, alcoholism, liver disease, or alcohol intoxication in the two decades following (1981-2001). Our main stati …

Paternity was assigned by using microsatellite markers. There was a clear effect of sperm-mobility phenotype on the outcome of sperm competition: in all 13 pairs the high-mobility male fathered the majority of offspring (75.3% overall; p < 0.0001). Reviving Ulysses contracts.

Ulysses contracts have faced paternalism objections since they first were proposed. Since the contracts are designed to override a present request from a legally competent patient in favor of a past request made by that patient, enforcement of these contracts was argued to be unjustifiable strong paternalism. Recent legal developments and new theories of practical reasoning suggest that the discussion of Ulysses contracts should be revived. This paper argues that with a proper understanding of the future-directed planning embodied in Ulysses contracts, the charge of strong paternalism can be a

[Klinefelter syndrome: literature review on using modern methods of assisted reproductive technologies].

The article reviews scientific papers devoted to the problem of reproductive health in men with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). Pathogenesis from a very early age (in utero), the possibility of ensuring biological paternity upon reaching sexual maturity and the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in offspring are discussed. Despite the fact that KS is one of the most common causes of male infertility associated with chromosomal abnormalities, due to the variability of clinical manifestations the proportion of patients identified before puberty did not exceed 10% before the widespread introduction of …

Insemination "Fraud": Potentially Criminal Actions in Reproductive Medicine.

Case law and statutory provisions ensure marital rules of paternity apply when artificial insemination is associated with the pregnancy. Virtually all jurisdictions in the United States provide for gamete donors to remain anonymous. Much of this has been challenged with access to donor information via 23 and me. A breach of trust and a number of lawsuits involving physician provider(s) have resulted. We provide case law examples related to artificial insemination and the identification of the sperm donor. Proposed future legislation to protect patients and offspring from harm in relation to th…

Prenatal diagnosis of a de novo non-fluorescent Y chromosome.

We report a case with non-mosaic Yq-, missing the fluorescent segment, and detected as a fetus studied for advanced maternal age. The father had a Y chromosome of average size and paternity was established wih a plausibility of 97.7% by HLA and erythrocyte antigen typing. The child had a normal male antigen typing. The child had a normal male phenotype at delivery and developmental milestones were normal through the first year of life. The Yq- showed no mitotic instability since it was retained in foreskin culture for its in vitro lifetime of 60 population doublings.

[Fertility treatment of men with Klinefelter syndrome].

In this review is described, that men with Klinefelter syndrome (KS) usually have azoospermia, and only a few have obtained paternity with ejaculated sperm. In Denmark, we performed surgery (micro-TESE or subcapsular orchiectomy) in 93 men with KS and obtained testicular sperm in 42% (39). More than ten children are now born, and several couples still have sperm and embryos cryopreserved with the potential to increase the live birth rate further. Since sperm in men with KS originate from cell lines with a normal chromosome number, children born with a father with KS usually have a normal karyo…

A Japanese SPG4 Patient with a Confirmed De Novo Mutation of the SPAST Gene.

Spastic paraplegia type 4 (SPG4) is caused by mutations of the SPAST gene and is the most common form of autosomal-dominantly inherited pure hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). We herein report a Japanese patient with SPG4 with a confirmed de novo mutation of SPAST. On exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing, we identified the heterozygous missense mutation p.R460L in the SPAST gene. This mutation was absent in the parents, and the paternity and maternity of the parents were both confirmed. The patient showed a pure SPG4 phenotype with an infantile onset. This study may expand the clinical and…

Fertility Issues in Disorders of Sex Development.

Fertility potential should be considered by the multidisciplinary team when addressing gender assignment, surgical management, and patient and family counselling of individuals with disorders of sex development. In 46,XY individuals, defects of gonadal differentiation or androgen or anti-Müllerian hormone synthesis or action result in incomplete or absent masculinization. In severe forms, raised as females, motherhood is possible with oocyte donation if Müllerian ducts have developed. In milder forms, raised as males, azoospermia or oligospermia are frequently found, however paternity has been…

Hydatidiform mole and HLA. III. HLA-antigen expression related to genomic origin.

In 52 conceptuses with known genomic origin, HLA determination was performed on whole villi and/or stromal cell cultures. In 26 androgenetic, diploid conceptuses, one or two paternal HLA-A,B haplotypes were found; twenty-four triploid conceptuses with two paternal and one maternal chromosome sets showed either one maternal and one paternal haplotype or one/two paternal HLA-A,B haplotypes. Consequently, androgenesis could not be demonstrated by lack of maternal antigens alone. Concomitant expression of three HLA haplotypes was not seen. HLA-A2 was passed on to the conceptus, both in the genetic

The Relationship Between Parental Psychological Control and College Students' Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Chain Mediation Roles of Relative Deprivation and Depression and the Moderating Role of Peer Relationships.

Previous research has demonstrated that parental psychological control increases the likelihood of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among college students. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. This study aims to investigate whether relative deprivation and depression serve as chain mediators in the relationship between paternal/maternal psychological control and NSSI, while also examining the moderating role of peer relationships. A total of 1158 college students (48.3% female; Mage = 19.26 years) completed assessments measuring parental psychological control,

Like father, like daughter:Paternal cadmium exposure causes hepatic glucose metabolic disorder and phospholipids accumulation in adult female offspring.

Cadmium (Cd), is a well-known reproductive toxicant. The impacts of paternal Cd exposure on offspring glucose and lipid metabolism remain unclear, despite the abundance of adverse reports following early exposure from the mother. Here, we assessed paternally acquired metabolic derailment using a mouse model. LC-MS/MS, transcriptomics and molecular experimental techniques were subsequently applied in this study to explore the potential mechanism. We found that paternal Cd exposure caused glucose intolerance, lower insulin sensitivity and abnormal hepatic glycogen storage in adult female offspri

Progressive osseous heteroplasia: a model for the imprinting effects of GNAS inactivating mutations in humans.

CONTEXT: Heterozygous GNAS inactivating mutations are known to induce pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1a when maternally inherited and pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism when paternally inherited. Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is a rare disease of ectopic bone formation, and studies in different families have shown that POH is also caused by paternally inherited GNAS mutations. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to characterize parental origin of the mutated allele in de novo cases of POH and to draw phenotype/genotype correlations according to maternal or paternal transmission of a same GNAS muta

Pontobulbar palsy and neurosensory deafness (Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome) with possible autosomal dominant inheritance.

A female with the Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome is described. The patient's father, a paternal uncle, and possibly a paternal first cousin had neurosensory deafness and a paternal aunt had clinical symptoms indicative of the syndrome. This family raises the possibility that the disorder is genetically heterogeneous with autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant forms. Alternatively, it could be caused by a mutant gene on the X chromosome.

Parental rearing and personality traits as predictors for adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

We aim to determine the correlation between parental rearing, personality traits, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in different quantiles. In particular, we created an intermediary effect model in which parental rearing affects OCD through personality traits. All predictors were measured at the time of the survey, comprising parental rearing (paternal rearing and maternal rearing), demographics (grade and gender), and personality traits (neuroticism, extroversion, and psychoticism). These results suggest that (a) paternal emotional warmth was negatively correlated with OCD at the 0.40-0

Sex of the parental donor and cellular rejection of renal allografts in children.

The survival of renal allografts of maternal and paternal origin has been assumed to be identical, and in reports concerning graft survival the outcome of parental transplants is not analyzed by sex of the donor. Fifty-five children received a parental kidney between January 1973 and March 1987 at one institution. There were 6 technical failures. Analysis of renal graft survival in the remaining 49 children indicates a disparity between maternal and paternal graft survival, with an increased propensity for loss of paternal grafts from cellular rejection. Nine of 22 parental grafts are no longe

Daily stress reactivity and risk appraisal mediates childhood parental abuse predicting adulthood psychopathology severity: An 18-year longitudinal mediation analysis.

Identifying mechanisms of childhood abuse-adulthood psychopathology relations could facilitate preventive efforts, but most prior studies used cross-sectional or two-wave designs and did not test the effects of childhood maternal and paternal abuse separately. Our 18-year three-wave study thus determined if Wave 2 daily stress reactivity and risk appraisal severity mediated Wave 1 retrospectively-reported childhood maternal and paternal abuse on Wave 3 generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), alcohol (AUD), and substance use disorder (SUD) self-

Usefulness of methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification for identification of parental origin of triploidy.

Triploidy is a genetic aberration resulting from an extra haploid set of chromosomes of paternal (diandric) or maternal (digynic) origin. Diandric cases, opposite to digynic ones, may lead to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) or generate maternal complications, therefore their identification is crucial, but reproducibility of traditionally used histopathological assessment is poor. The aim of the study was to analyse the usefulness of methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) with probes for two differentially methylated regions (DMR) at chromosome
