Isolated dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon in an amateur snowboarder: a case report.

Isolated dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon is an uncommon pathologic entity that typically occurs in the setting of acute trauma. The diagnosis remains challenging and is often delayed second to the rarity of the injury and symptoms similar to that of medial ankle sprains and other routinely diagnosed injuries about the ankle. The factors that predispose this tendon to dislocation include a hypoplastic retromalleolar groove, flexor retinaculum insufficiency, chronic repetitive trauma, and a structural abnormality from a previous medial malleolar fracture, or a combination thereof. Dis

Primary and Secondary Consequences of Rotator Cuff Injury on Joint Stabilizing Tissues in the Shoulder.

Rotator cuff tears (RCTs) are one of the primary causes of shoulder pain and dysfunction in the upper extremity accounting over 4.5 million physician visits per year with 250,000 rotator cuff repairs being performed annually in the U.S. While the tear is often considered an injury to a specific tendon/tendons and consequently treated as such, there are secondary effects of RCTs that may have significant consequences for shoulder function. Specifically, RCTs have been shown to affect the joint cartilage, bone, the ligaments, as well as the remaining intact tendons of the shoulder joint. Injurie

Recent advances in tendon redox biology: the interplay of oxidative stress, calcium signaling, and antioxidant defence mechanisms.

Tendon injuries are increasingly recognized as conditions driven not only by mechanical overload but also by complex molecular imbalances, particularly involving oxidative stress. Recent evidence highlights the central role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), originating primarily from mitochondrial respiration and NADPH oxidase activation, in regulating cellular responses during tendon injury and repair. Mechanical loading and calcium signaling further influence ROS dynamics, exacerbating oxidative damage or modulating adaptive responses depending on context. Tendon cells counteract oxidative i…

[Tendon sheath lipoma associated with quadriceps tendon rupture. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Tendon sheath lipoma is an uncommon tumor characterized morphologically by mature fatty tissue lobes adherent to the tendon or intersecting its fibers. The association with quadriceps tendon rupture is unusual. Etiologic factors that may condition those ruptures have not yet been fully described. However, several authors suggest the existence of a subjacent pathology such as metabolic or inflammatory diseases. Minimal trauma may lead to such ruptures as well as associated ligamentous or bony injuries. The prognosis regarding quadriceps tendon rupture mainly depends on the lap betwe

Late flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture due to retained glass fragments.

A retained glass fragment caused a flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture 23 years after the patient's initial injury. A review of the literature shows that although previous cases of delayed damage from retained objects have been reported, this is the first report of a tendon injury that was preceded by such a long asymptomatic period. The lesion was treated with a flexor digitorum superficialis tendon transfer from the ring finger with excellent functional results.

Anatomic Structures at Risk With Antegrade Intramedullary Fixation of the First Metacarpal Using Three Start Points: Is There A Safe Zone?

PURPOSE: Intramedullary fixation of extraarticular first metacarpal fractures using a percutaneous technique may risk injury to important anatomic structures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate potential safe zones for antegrade implant entry of the first metacarpal and describe the anatomical structures at risk. METHODS: Ten cadaveric hands were used to evaluate three start points located at the first metacarpal base: volar-radial, dorsal-radial, and dorsal-ulnar. A fluoroscopic imaging system was used to guide percutaneous placement of 0.8 mm × 100 mm guidewires and 2.0 mm diameter sc

Chronic Hamstring Tendon Ruptures.

Hamstring tendon injuries are common, accounting for up to 30% of all injuries in athletes. Delayed diagnosis, failed initial conservative therapy, or repetitive injuries can lead to chronicity. This, in turn, is associated with persistent pain, loss of strength, and potentially neurological symptoms, often resulting in surgical intervention. Current literature is heterogeneous and focuses primarily on surgical treatment. Direct anchor suture repairs are described, as well as restoration of continuity using allograft or autograft interposition. Clinical outcomes are difficult to compare due to…

Musculoskeletal Injury and Illness Patterns in British Eventing Horses: A Descriptive Study.

There has been little investigation into the health patterns of the eventing horse population outside veterinary clinics. To target health problems in the eventing horse population, it is important to determine the relative impact of different health problems. The objectives were to describe the prevalence and patterns of lameness/illness in registered British eventing horses. An online survey was released for all horses registered with British eventing in 2018. Data were collated and descriptive analyses undertaken. A total of 1677 surveys were completed, among which 49.4% reported a previous

Digital nerve injuries: epidemiology, results, costs, and impact on daily life.

Epidemiology, results of treatment, impact on activity of daily living (ADL), and costs for treatment of digital nerve injuries have not been considered consistently. Case notes of patients of 0-99 years of age living in Malmö municipality, Sweden, who presented with a digital nerve injury and were referred to the Department of Hand Surgery in 1995-2005 were analysed retrospectively. The incidence was 6.2/100 000 inhabitants and year. Most commonly men (75%; median age 29 years) were injured. Isolated nerve injuries and concomitant tendon injuries were equally common. The direct costs (hospita…

Imaging in the assessment and management of overuse injuries in the foot and ankle.

Overuse injuries of the ankle and foot are common in the general and athletic populations. The wide spectrum of overuse injuries includes ligamentous injuries, soft tissue and osseous impingement, osteochondral lesions, tendon injuries, and stress fractures. Some conditions such as impingement syndromes and stress fractures may be missed on initial physical examination, and patients with such injuries often present to a sports or orthopedic clinic with persistent symptoms. With the increasing participation in sports, health-care professionals involved in the care of athletes at all levels must…

Surgical management of a completely avulsed adductor longus muscle in a professional equestrian rider.

Avulsion injuries of the adductor longus muscle tendon are rare and a challenge to manage especially in athletes. There has been little published literature on the outcome of conservative and operative treatment for these injuries. We report the first case of an acute adductor longus avulsion injury which was surgically repaired in a professional equestrian rider. Return to full preinjury function was achieved at 3 months with surgical repair using 3 suture anchors.

Effect of anterior supraspinatus tendon partial-thickness tears on infraspinatus tendon strain through a range of joint rotation angles.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears are common shoulder problems whose propagation is difficult to predict because of the structural and mechanical inhomogeneity of the supraspinatus tendon. We have previously shown that the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons interact mechanically when the supraspinatus tendon is intact or exhibits a full-thickness tear, so that an increase in supraspinatus tendon strain is paralleled by an increase in infraspinatus tendon strain. Such interaction is critical and suggests that an increase in infraspinatus tendon strain that accompanies an increase in supraspin

Endoscopic peroneus brevis tendon transfer for chronic ruptures of the Achilles tendon: surgical technique.

Chronic Achilles tendon rupture is usually defined as a rupture diagnosed 4-6 weeks after injury. The management of chronic Achilles tendon rupture (CATR) is a topic of hot debate, and no consensus has been achieved. Surgical management of CATR is recommended. Several approaches, techniques, and grafts have been described. Open techniques carry a high risk of wound breakdown, infection, and necessitate long rehabilitation times. Surgical techniques with smaller incisions to reduce the risk of scar fibrosis, pain, and infection are becoming common. The ipsilateral tendon of the hallux flexor lo

Extensor indicis transfer improves function in patients after rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon.

The primary aim was to determine the improvement in patient-reported functional outcomes (PROMs) following extensor indicis proprius (EIP) transfer for a closed rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon. Secondary aims were to analyze the impact of this procedure on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and satisfaction. Preoperative and one-year postoperative PROMs were collected prospectively at a single institution over a two-year period (2014-2016). The primary outcome measure was the QuickDASH score. Patients also completed satisfaction scores, and the EQ-5D-5L score was used
