From Aquaculture to Aquaculture: Production of the Fish Feed Additive Astaxanthin by Corynebacterium glutamicum Using Aquaculture Sidestream.

Circular economy holds great potential to minimize the use of finite resources, and reduce waste formation by the creation of closed-loop systems. This also pertains to the utilization of sidestreams in large-scale biotechnological processes. A flexible feedstock concept has been established for the industrially relevant Corynebacterium glutamicum, which naturally synthesizes the yellow C50 carotenoid decaprenoxanthin. In this study, we aimed to use a preprocessed aquaculture sidestream for production of carotenoids, including the fish feed ingredient astaxanthin by C. glutamicum. The addition…

Antipodean aquaculture agents.

Parallel features exist among diseases in Antipodean hosts when compared with those in other tropical and temperate regions. These features can be associated between infections in fish and prawns and between infections in freshwater and saltwater systems. Both fish and prawns are prone to physical stress, to behavioural stress, and to both introduced and native disease agents, agents that are limiting factors in several established aquaculture ventures. Both types of hosts are reared in a variety of facilities, each allowing for a different dynamic predisposition for disease. These diseases in…

Avermectin use in aquaculture.

The main indication for use of avermectins in aquaculture-produced fish is infestations with ectoparasitic copepods. The compounds ivermectin and emamectin benzoate are predominantly used as in-feed formulations on salmonid fish against copepods in the family Caligidae: Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Caligus elongatus and C. rogercresseyi. These agents are well-documented as very effective on all developmental stages of the parasites. The duration of effect can be up to 10 weeks. The safety margin for ivermectin is narrow, but better for emamectin benzoate. Environmental impact from these chemicals …

Antimicrobial use and resistance in aquaculture: findings of a globally administered survey of aquaculture-allied professionals.

There is limited published information regarding antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquaculture. Our objective was to determine the opinions of aquaculture-allied professionals around the world on the frequency of AMU and AMR in common aquatic species. The study questionnaire included five sections: respondent demographics, extent of AMU in aquaculture, frequency of observations of AMR in aquaculture, AMR monitoring and surveillance and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in various jurisdictions. It was administered in English and Spanish to 604 professionals in 25…

DNA vaccination for finfish aquaculture.

In fish, DNA vaccines have been shown to give very high protection in experimental facilities against a number of viral diseases, particularly diseases caused by rhabdoviruses. However, their efficacy in generating protection against other families of fish viral pathogens is less clear. One DNA vaccine is currently in use commercially in fish farms in Canada and the commercialisation of another was authorised in Europe in 2017. The mechanism of action of DNA vaccines, including the role of the innate immune responses induced shortly after DNA vaccination in the activation of the adaptive immun

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and aquaculture.

Dietary consumption of fish is widely recommended because of the beneficial effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the risks of cardiovascular and Alzheimer's diseases. The American Heart Association currently recommends eating at least two servings of fish per week. We are concerned that consumption of farmed fish may provide a means of transmission of infectious prions from cows with bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans, causing variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease.

Aquaculture feed and food safety.

The ultimate objective of an aquaculture feed manufacturer and aquaculture food supplier is to ensure that the feed or food produced is both safe and wholesome. Reported food safety risks, which may be associated with the use of commercial animal feeds, including compound aquaculture feeds, usually result from the possible presence of unwanted contaminants, either within the feed ingredients used or from the external contamination of the finished feed on prolonged storage. The major animal feed contaminants that have been reported to date have included Salmonellae, mycotoxins, veterinary drug …

The future of therapeutic agents in aquaculture.

The implementation and monitoring of fish health regulations vary extensively in aquaculture throughout the world. In the main salmon-producing countries, there is strict regulatory oversight of the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Such controls have supported the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry and, in Norway, aquaculture has been able to reduce its total consumption of antibiotics by more than 99% between 1995 and today, yet there has been a 20-fold rise in production volume. Other countries on other continents may have less control, with no mandatory prescription regulations and …

Beyond Probiotics: Postbiotics for Healthy Aquaculture.

With a growing global population and strict restrictions on traditional antibiotics, sustainable fish health management is crucial for aquaculture. While live probiotics are popular alternatives, their real-world effectiveness remains highly controversial. Variable effectiveness results from complex interactions with different fish species, differences in fish gastrointestinal anatomy, and variations in environmental parameters such as salinity, pH, and temperature. Furthermore, live probiotics pose risks of ecological disturbance and horizontal gene transfer of antimicrobial resistance. This …

Vaccination strategies in freshwater salmonid aquaculture.

The focus of this chapter is antibacterial vaccines. The main salmonid species in freshwater aquaculture is the rainbow trout. Other salmonid species are produced on a limited scale. The most important bacterial fish diseases in European freshwater aquaculture are the rainbow trout fry syndrome-RTFS-(Flavobacterium psychrophilum) and enteric redmouth disease-ERM-(Yersinia ruckeri) which are widespread and cause serious epizootics, while furunculosis (Aeromonas salmonicida) is endemic, only giving overt disease under extremely stressing conditions. In the hatchery, there is a need for vaccinati…

Formaldehyde Exposure of Aquaculture Workers in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Korea's aquaculture sector primarily cultivates aquatic life, with fish seed production as a focus. Formalin, a parasiticide, consists of 37% formaldehyde mixed with yellow No. 4 dye. Formaldehyde vaporization poses cancer risks, classified as a carcinogen. Korea regulates formaldehyde as a hazardous substance, requiring workplace environment measurements. Few aquaculture farms have conducted these checks in recent years. In this study, we investigated actual formaldehyde exposure levels among Korean aquaculture workers, highlighting a critical safety concern. METHODS: A field sur…

Effects of nanoparticles in species of aquaculture interest.

Recently, it was observed that there is an increasing application of nanoparticles (NPs) in aquaculture. Manufacturers are trying to use nano-based tools to remove the barriers about waterborne food, growth, reproduction, and culturing of species, their health, and water treatment in order to increase aquaculture production rates, being the safe-by-design approach still unapplied. We reviewed the applications of NPs in aquaculture evidencing that the way NPs are applied can be very different: some are direclty added to feed, other to water media or in aquaculture facilities. Traditional toxici…

Health and safety concerns in fisheries and aquaculture.

Only 10% of all foodborne illnesses in the United States are attributed to seafood, making seafood a relatively safe food commodity. The imp … ed by humans from fish are covered in this review article. Prevention of accidents in fisheries and aquaculture is receiving more attention by groups such as the FDA, OSHA, and the Working Group for Quality Assurance in Aquaculture Production, which is part of the federal Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture in Washington, D.C.

Snapshot of resistome, virulome and mobilome in aquaculture.

Aquaculture environments can be hotspots for resistance genes through the surrounding environment. Our objective was to study the resistome, virulome and mobilome of Gram-negative bacteria isolated in seabream and bivalve molluscs, using a WGS approach. Sixty-six Gram-negative strains (Aeromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Hafniaceae, Morganellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Shewanellaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Yersiniaceae families) were selected for genomic characterization. The species and MLST were determined, and antibiotic/disinfectants/heavy metals resistance genes, virulence determinants, MGE, and…

Application of DNA vaccine technology to aquaculture.

The aquaculture industry needs to augment its global production and efficiency to meet the increasing consumer needs for fish and shellfish products. Unfortunately, infectious diseases have been a major impediment to the development and profitability of fish farms. While vaccines offer the most efficient way to control infectious pathogens, current products have only been successful against some diseases. These are mostly bacterial, and there are still several important diseases, mainly of viral and parasitic origin, for which no prophylactic treatment exists. DNA vaccines, compared to traditi…
