Salivary secretions: narcolepsy and central nervous system stimulants.

In an ongoing attempt to develop a model to study the influence of various diseases and drugs on saliva, we studied persons with narcolepsy treated with central nervous system stimulants. The aim was to study the secretion of salivary proteins in narcolepsy in the presence and absence of central nervous system stimulants. For this purpose, two proteins synthesized in acinar cells, acidic proline-rich proteins (PRPs) and statherin, were selected. Persons with narcolepsy treated with central nervous system stimulants only were included, n = 12, ages 14 to 68, seven females. Citric-acid-stimulate…

Uropharmacology: X. Central nervous system stimulants and depressants.

Several drugs that are utilized primarily for their effects on the central nervous system also affect lower urinary tract function. Most of these effects are produced by the action of these drugs on adrenergic and cholinergic receptors or by direct action of lower urinary tract musculature. Central nervous system stimulants and depressants which are known to affect the storage or evacuation role of the lower urinary tract are discussed.

Central nervous system stimulants in recreational and medical use.

Stimulants that act on the central nervous system have been used since antiquity for ritual and other uses. Organic chemistry techniques, especially those developed in Germany in the late 1800s, resulted in the isolation and structural determination of several important stimulants. Synthetic pathways for amphetamine and related stimulants were developed in the first half of the 19th century, and these new drugs were widely marketed. Awareness of abuse potential emerged soon after but was contested. Stimulants have been used to counteract fatigue and promote wakefulness during military operatio

Central-nervous-system stimulants: appraisal of use in geropsychiatric patients.

CNS stimulants such as methylphenidate and pentylenetetrazol are currently prescribed for the treatment of aged persons with symptoms of senility. A review of clinical studies conducted with these compounds indicates that firm evidence of efficacy is lacking. Because of the risks associated with high doses of such stimulants in the aged, it would seem that these compounds are of limited utility in geriatric psychiatry.

The effect of central nervous system stimulants on Tourette syndrome.

A survey of patients with Tourette syndrome uncovered 32 who had been exposed to central nervous system stimulants. In 17 (53%) of these patients, symptoms were markedly accentuated by the drugs. Two patients whose Tourette syndrome developed suddenly when methylphenidate was administered are also reported.

Central nervous system stimulants promote nerve cell death under continuous hypoxia.

Intake of central nervous system (CNS) stimulants causes hypoxia and brain edema, which results in nerve cell death. However, no study has yet investigated the direct and continuous effects on nerve cells of CNS stimulants under hypoxia. Thus, based on autopsy cases, the effects of CNS stimulant drugs on the CNS were examined. The pathological changes in cultured nerve cells when various CNS stimulants were added under a hypoxic condition were also investigated. Five groups (Group A, stimulants; Group B, stimulants with psychiatric drugs; Group C, caffeine; Group D, psychiatric drugs; and Grou

Central Nervous System Stimulants Limit Caffeine Transport at the Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier.

Caffeine, a common ingredient in energy drinks, crosses the blood-brain barrier easily, but the kinetics of caffeine across the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) has not been investigated. Therefore, 127 autopsy cases (Group A, 30 patients, stimulant-detected group; and Group B, 97 patients, no stimulant detected group) were examined. In addition, a BCSFB model was constructed using human vascular endothelial cells and human choroid plexus epithelial cells separated by a filter, and the kinetics of caffeine in the BCSFB and the effects of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), a neuroexcitatory agent

Cardiovascular safety of central nervous system stimulants in children and adolescents: population based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the cardiac safety of central nervous system stimulants in children and adolescents. DESIGN: Population based retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Automated healthcare claims data from 1,219,847 children and young people eligible for 28 state Medicaid programmes from 1999 to 2006 linked to the Social Security Death Master File and the National Death Index. PARTICIPANTS: Children and young people age 3-18 entered the cohort at the first diagnosis of a mental health condition commonly treated with stimulants (such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) after a mi…

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: tics and central nervous system stimulants in twins and nontwins.

Thirty-four of 170 surveyed individuals with Tourette's syndrome (TS) were treated with CNS stimulants before age 18. In 24% of treated individuals, persistent exacerbation of tics was closely associated with treatment. In 3%, tic response was transient, and in 24%, tics were not obviously associated with treatment. Six pairs of monozygotic twins were discordant for stimulant treatment, and all untreated co-twins also developed TS. The number of individuals in whom stimulants permanently exacerbate tics may be small, but the risk appears to be real. Genetic vulnerability and duration and timin
