Cognitive dissonance and the perception of natural environments.

Two studies demonstrated that the motivation to resolve cognitive dissonance affects the visual perception of physical environments. In Study 1, subjects crossed a campus quadrangle wearing a costume reminiscent of Carmen Miranda. In Study 2, subjects pushed themselves up a hill while kneeling on a skateboard. Subjects performed either task under a high-choice, low-choice, or control condition. Subjects in the high-choice conditions, presumably to resolve dissonance, perceived the environment to be less aversive than did subjects in the low-choice and control conditions, seeing a shorter dista

Exploring cognitive dissonance in the correctional nursing experience.

OBJECTIVE: Correctional nurses navigate conflict between custody and caring. Balance is needed between healthcare and security priorities. This study explores the unique nature of nursing practice within correctional settings to inform interventions reducing stress, enhancing coping and mitigating cognitive dissonance among these nurses. DESIGN: Qualitative, semi-structured interviews. SAMPLE: Purposive sampling of nurses practicing in a correctional facility in the Southwestern United States. RESULTS: Thematic analyses identified six themes describing the experiences of nurses in the corre

Cognitive dissonance increases spine loading in the neck and low back.

Cognitive dissonance refers to a state where two psychologically inconsistent thoughts, behaviours, or attitudes are held at the same time. The objective of this study was to explore the potential role of cognitive dissonance in biomechanical loading in the low back and neck. Seventeen participants underwent a laboratory experiment involving a precision lowering task. To establish a cognitive dissonance state (CDS), study participants were provided negative feedback on their performance running counter to a pre-established expectation that their performance was excellent. Dependent measures of

Cognitive dissonance resolution depends on executive functions and frontal lobe integrity.

The free choice paradigm constitutes one of the most explored paradigms of cognitive dissonance research. Typically, once asked to choose between two similarly rated items, subjects subsequently exhibit an increased preference for chosen items and a decreased preference for rejected ones. Recent studies have demonstrated that such choice-induced preference change (CIPC) occur exclusively for remembered choices, suggesting a mechanism that ensures subjective coherence across time. In the present work we predicted that in order for CIPC to occur, not only must past choices be remembered, but exe

Peer-facilitated cognitive dissonance versus healthy weight eating disorders prevention: A randomized comparison.

Research supports the efficacy of both cognitive dissonance (CD) and healthy weight (HW) eating disorders prevention, and indicates that CD can be delivered by peer-facilitators, which facilitates dissemination. This study investigated if peer-facilitators can deliver HW when it is modified for their use and extended follow-up of peer-facilitated CD as compared to previous trials. Based on pilot data, we modified HW (MHW) to facilitate peer delivery, elaborate benefits of the healthy-ideal, and place greater emphasis on consuming nutrient dense foods. Female sorority members (N=106) were rando

Cognitive Dissonance in Nursing: A Mixed Systematic Review of Its Impact and Coping Strategies.

AIM: This mixed-method systematic review synthesised quantitative and qualitative empirical evidence on how cognitive dissonance triggered by care experiences and circumstances affects nurses' well-being, professional behaviour, patient care and on the coping strategies nurses use to manage these experiences. DESIGN: Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance, a convergent integrated synthesis approach combined qualitative and quantitative findings. DATA SOURCES: Sixteen studies were included following a comprehensive search across five databases in August 2024. RESULTS: Sixteen studies wer

Children and divorce: A rapid review targeting cognitive dissonance, in the context of narrative therapy.

Today, for divorcing parents, the social norms of "good" parenting appear to impose obligations to "fight" for shared custody of their children. However, this may intensify conflicts experienced by their children in the form of cognitive dissonance. Authors conducted a rapid review to explore children's experiences of divorce (ages three to 12 years old) in the context of narrative therapy, in order to uncover the mechanism of cognitive dissonance. Four databases of Scopus, PsychINFO, Family and Societies Studies Worldwide, and PubMed were searched for literature in the last 10 years. Results

The desire to avoid cognitive dissonance drives community formation in a social network model.

As the consequences of opinion polarization effect our everyday life in more and more aspect, the understanding of its origins and driving forces becomes increasingly important. Here we develop an agent-based network model with realistic human traits: individuals in our simulations are endowed with an internal belief system which they attempt to keep as coherent as possible. This desire – to reassure existing attitudes while avoiding cognitive dissonance – is one of the most influential and widely accepted theories in social psychology by now. Our model shows that even in networks that start o

Longitudinal Effects of Peer Rejection on Reactive/Proactive Aggression: Risk Accumulation or Cognitive Dissonance?

Although peer rejection has been associated with increased reactive and proactive aggression, previous studies have predominantly used cross-sectional designs, which limits causal inferences. Moreover, current research on the specific mechanisms of different aggression subtypes remains in adequate. This longitudinal study aimed to (1) Examine whether peer rejection differentially predicts reactive and proactive aggression, (2) Test whether rejection sensitivity mediates these pathways and (3) Compare the Cumulative Risk Theory and Cognitive Dissonance Theory by exploring how hostile attributio

A cognitive dissonance-based mobile app intervention for smoking cessation: A single-arm pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: Despite overall declines in the rate of tobacco use in the United States over the past 30 years, nearly 38 million Americans still smoke, posing extremely high risk for long-term health problems and death. Recent reviews note that there has been significant progress in the application of both clinical and public health interventions to help smokers quit; however, they have also concluded that the overall success rate has not significantly improved. There remains a need for novel, theory-driven approaches to enhance quit rates and innovative interventions that increase reach and e

Staying or Leaving: Patriarchal Roots of Cognitive Dissonance and the Impact of Childhood Adversity on Abusive Relationships.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a critical public health issue, disproportionately affecting women. This study investigates the psychological mechanisms that may help explain how cognitive mechanisms are associated with revictimization in abusive relationships, with a focus on the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cognitive dissonance reduction strategies. Drawing upon Cognitive Dissonance Theory and the Foot-in-the-Door effect, this cross-sectional study examines how ACEs predict revictimization in adulthood and whether this relationship is moderated by specific cogniti

The psychology of user reliance on anthropomorphic robots: Affective dissonance, cognitive load, and enactive sense-making.

Guided by Enactive Cognition Theory, this study examines how enacted anthropomorphism relates to users' reliance on service robots through affective dissonance and cognitive load. A sequential mixed-method design comprised a pilot phase for construct refinement, a quantitative study of 311 users with prior service-robot experience using structural equation modeling, and a post-hoc qualitative study with 19 hospitality industry professionals. Results show that enacted anthropomorphism is positively associated with reliance and negatively associated with affective dissonance, while unexpectedly

Cognitive dissonance in tuberculosis stigma: A mixed methods analysis of tuberculosis stigma measurement in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Patient and Community Perspectives Towards Tuberculosis are the most common measure of tuberculosis (TB) stigma in sub-Saharan Africa. The instrument and its sub-scales (patient and community) have been quantitatively validated but have not undergone qualitative exploration in South Africa. METHODS: We explored whether the Patient Perspectives Towards Tuberculosis adequately represents stigma as experienced by people with TB in South Africa. We used mixed methods to explore differences between the lived experience of TB and the quantitative stigma score. Participants with rifa

The modelled cost-effectiveness of cognitive dissonance for the prevention of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in adolescent girls in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), are prevalent disorders that carry substantial economic and social burden. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the modelled population cost-effectiveness of cognitive dissonance (CD), a school-based preventive intervention for EDs, in the Australian health care context. METHOD: A population-based Markov model was developed to estimate the cost per disability adjusted life-year (DALY) averted by CD relative to no intervention. We modelled the cases of AN and BN that could be prevented over a

Development and efficacy of a cognitive dissonance-based intervention program for intuitive eating: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Intuitive eating is an approach that encourages individuals to eat according to their body's hunger and satiety cues. Intuitive eating interventions vary in methodology, lack time-based monitoring, and are often not based on all intuitive eating principles. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate the efficacy of an intuitive eating intervention using cognitive dissonance strategies to increase intuitive eating, positive body image, and health-related motivation for physical exercise, as well as to reduce disordered eating behaviors. Brazilian women (n = 110) aged 18-35 were randoml

A cognitive dissonance-based intervention to reduce ultra-processed food intake: Protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite their harmful mental and physical health effects, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are highly prevalent in the US. To maximize profits, the UPF industry designs these foods to be hyperpalatable, markets them aggressively, and influences government policies to prevent their regulation. To combat this powerful influence, individuals must be highly motivated to reduce their UPF intake. If participants learn about the harms of the UPF industry and publicly denounce the industry, they are expected to experience strong cognitive dissonance and motivation to reduce their intake of the

The case to augment healthcare professional training for the treatment of obesity by integrating cognitive dissonance interventions to reduce weight stigma.

Obesity is associated with risk for chronic health problems and increased mortality. Weight stigma, which entails negative attitudes and behaviors directed at people based solely on their body size, is psychologically harmful and contributes to obesity and obesity-related health problems. Yet, weight stigma is pervasive in society and commonly experienced by patients in healthcare settings, which lowers the quality of patients' healthcare experiences. Healthcare providers and trainees report feeling underprepared to treat obesity, which may lead to overreliance on weight-management strategies

Explaining the attitude-behaviour gap in adolescent sexual and reproductive health service utilization: A cognitive dissonance perspective from rural Uganda.

Adolescents in low-resource settings hold positive attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, yet fail to use them. This study presents a theoretical reinterpretation of mixed-methods data (N = 408 adolescents, aged 13-19) from Uganda's Busoga region, through Festinger's Cognitive Dissonance Theory. Quantitative findings showed health-seeking attitudes predicted SRH service utilization (β = 0.910, p < .001) and future intentions (β = 1.976, p < .001), but 52% of adolescents had no SRH service contact in past year, and mean uptake scores remained below 2.0 on a 5-point scal
