Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm associated with ulcerative colitis: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) development is a critical prognostic factor for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), making its early detection important. However, early detection of CRC is clinically challenging. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with transverse colon cancer and a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) in the context of pancolitis-type UC. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male patient with a 24-year history of pancolitis-type UC was referred to our hospital after a routine surveillance colonoscopy for the first time in 5 years revealed transverse col

[2 cases of neutropenic enteropathy and bone marrow hypoplasia. An association not reported in Mexico].

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is a serious complication in neutropenic patients; it often affects the cecum and the ascending colon. Most cases have been reported in neutropenic patients after chemotherapy for hematologic neoplasms, and some in association with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, benign cyclic neutropenia, and solid neoplasms. As far as we know, four cases of NE associated to AA (aplastic anemia, hypoplastic bone marrow) have been previously reported, two of them with autopsy studies. The macroscopic findings in the enterocolonic lesions were not illustrated. We report t

The Dark Knight: Functional Reprogramming of Neutrophils in the Pathogenesis of Colitis-Associated Cancer.

Neutrophils are the primary myeloid cells that are recruited to inflamed tissues, and they are key players during colitis, being also present within the tumor microenvironment during the initiation and growth of colon cancer. Neutrophils fundamentally serve to protect the host against microorganism invasion, but during cancer development, they can become protumoral and lead to tumor initiation, growth, and eventually, metastasis-hence, playing a dichotomic role for the host. Protumoral neutrophils in cancer patients can be immunosuppressive and serve as markers for disease progression but thei

Effectiveness of endoscopic resection for colorectal neoplasms in ulcerative colitis: a multicenter registration study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) are at risk of developing colorectal cancer. The feasibility of endoscopic resection (ER) for UC-associated neoplasia has been suggested, but its efficacy and safety remain unclear. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ER for colorectal neoplasms in patients with UC. METHODS: This was a retrospective, multicenter cohort study of patients with UC who initially underwent ER or surgery for colorectal neoplasms between April 2015 and March 2021. Patients who had prior colorectal neoplastic lesions were excluded. RESULTS: Among 2

The immunomodulatory role of matrix metalloproteinases in colitis-associated cancer.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are an important class of enzymes in the body that function through the extracellular matrix (ECM). They are involved in diverse pathophysiological processes, such as tumor invasion and metastasis, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, periodontal disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, and diseases of the central nervous system. MMPs participate in the occurrence and development of numerous cancers and are closely related to immunity. In the present study, we review the immunomodulatory role of MMPs in colitis-associated cancer (CAC) and discuss relevant clinical appl

Identifying neutrophil-associated subtypes in ulcerative colitis and confirming neutrophils promote colitis-associated colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestinal mucosa, the incidence of which has increased worldwide. There is still a lack of clear understanding of the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis that ultimately leads to colitis-associated colorectal cancer. METHOD: We download UC transcriptome data from the GEO database and pass the limma package in order to identify differentially expressed genes. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was used to identify potential biological pathways. We identified immune cells associated with UC by CIBERSORT and Weighted c

Non-coding RNAs in skin cancers:Biological roles and molecular mechanisms.

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, potentially life-long, disorder, including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the mucosa of the colon; it starts at the rectum and continues proximally in a continuous pattern to include up to the entire colon, called pancolitis. Patients with ulcerative colitis are at particularly higher risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) than the general population. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of colorectal malignancy reported in the gene

Immunomodulatory Effects of Flavonoids in Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer.

Flavonoids present in plants and fruits have been used in traditional medicine to reduce inflammation under various inflammatory conditions, including colitis. The pharmacological mechanisms that regulate intestinal inflammation are associated with the colonic microbiota, protection against oxidative stress, preservation of epithelial barrier function, and immune homeostasis. This review describes the main flavonoids present in the diet and examines their role in mitigating colon inflammation, as well as their impact when chronic inflammation progresses to colitis-associated colorectal cancer

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Aspects of Colitis-Associated Cancer in Ulcerative Colitis.

Inflammatory bowel diseases have long been recognized as entities with a higher risk of colorectal cancer. An increasing amount of information has been published regarding ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer and its unique mechanisms in recent decades, as ulcerative colitis constitutes a chronic process characterized by cycles of activity and remission of unpredictable durations and intensities; cumulative genomic alterations occur during active disease and mucosal healing, resulting in a special sequence of events different to the events associated with sporadic colorectal cancer.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the transverse colon with synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a patient with ulcerative colitis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare proliferative disease of uncertain etiology, characterized by the proliferation of fusate or epithelioid myofibroblasts admixed with predominantly mononuclear inflammatory cells. IMT is generally considered a benign lesion, although in some cases this neoplasm has shown an aggressive behavior in terms of local recurrence and metastasis. We report the case of a patient with a ten-year history of ulcerative colitis affected by IMT of the transverse colon and by synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of stomach. PRESENTA

Effect of the β-glucan from Lentinus edodes on colitis-associated colorectal cancer and gut microbiota.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world, and therapies with safety are in great need. In this study, the β-glucan isolated from Lentinus edodes was successfully fractionated into three fractions with different weight-average molecular weight (Mw) by ultrasonic degradation and used for the treatment of colorectal cancer. In our findings, the β-glucan was successfully degraded with the Mw decreased from 2.56 × 106 Da to 1.41 × 106 Da, exhibiting the triple helix structure without conformation disruption. The in vitro results indicate that β-glucan fractions inhibited colon

Methylation Analysis of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis is a well-known inflammatory bowel disease. Patients have an increased risk of developing colitis associated carcinoma (CAC). It is important for patient management to be able to distinguish between ulcerative colitis associated carcinoma and sporadic carcinoma (sCRC). However, this distinction is frequently very challenging. It is not readily possible to differentiate this histologically. However, the diagnosis is crucial for the patient's further treatment and follow-up. An attempt was therefore made to develop a diagnostic regime that would enable a reliable d

Interleukin-34 deficiency aggravates development of colitis and colitis-associated cancer in mice.

BACKGROUND: Although expression of interleukin (IL)-34 is upregulated in active ulcerative colitis (UC), the molecular function and underlying mechanism are largely unclear. AIM: To investigate the function of IL-34 in acute colitis, in a wound healing model and in colitis-associated cancer in IL-34-deficient mice. METHODS: Colitis was induced by administration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), and carcinogenesis was induced by azoxymethane (AOM). Whether the impact of IL-34 on colitis was dependent on macrophages was validated by depletion of macrophages in a murine model. The association be

Colitis-associated colorectal carcinogenesis: molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Chronic colitis is a major risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly for colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC), where persistent inflammation drives the transition from mucosal injury to malignant transformation. Accumulating evidence indicates that gut microbiota dysbiosis, epithelial barrier disruption, microbial translocation, chronic immune activation, and aberrant inflammatory signaling collectively contribute to CAC initiation and progression. Sustained inflammation promotes oxidative stress, DNA damage, genetic/epigenetic alterations, and tumor microenvironment remodeli

The role of IL-37 in inflammatory bowel disease and colitis-associated colorectal cancer.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic inflammatory disorder of intestine and a high risk for colorectal cancer; however, its precise etiology and pathogenesis remain poorly understood. Interleukin (IL)-37, a member of IL-1 family, exerts anti-inflammatory effects in various inflammatory diseases and cancers, and is generated by several epithelial cells and immune cells. Mechanistically, IL-37 mediates its anti-inflammatory either by translocating into nucleus in complex with small mother against decapentaplegic homolog 3 or binding to extracellular interleukin-18 receptor and IL-1
