Evidence Map of Cupping Therapy.

This study aimed to describe and assess the current evidence in systematic reviews on cupping therapy for various conditions. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and six Korean databases for systematic reviews of trials on cupping treatments for any condition published prior to March 2021. We used a bubble plot to graphically display the clinical topics, the number of articles, the number of participants in the total population, confidence, and effectiveness. Thirteen systematic reviews that met the inclusion criteria we

Cupping Therapy: From Traditional Therapy to Cardiac Remedy.

Cupping therapy, also known as Hijama, is a traditional therapy applied through a break in the superficial vessels of the skin, followed by vacuum suctioning of superficial blood into suction cups. Cupping is gaining more attention nowadays as a potential treatment for chronic pain, musculoskeletal problems, metabolic disorders, and other chronic conditions. The available evidence about the cardiac outcomes and cardioprotective role of cupping therapy is lacking. While some studies support the role of cupping in treating various cardiac conditions, others did not show evidence or were skeptica

Factitious panniculitis induced by cupping therapy.

Cupping therapy is an alternative medical procedure that has been widely performed in Asian countries to relieve pain. It is known that there is no complication to this therapy, so many non-health care professionals have performed this procedure. However, there have been few reports on complications, such as iron deficiency anemia, hemorrhagic bullae, kelloids, vasovagal syncope, and foreign body reactions. Masses associated with panniculitis induced by cupping are extremely rare, and they require a unique approach.A 56-year-old woman presented with a 10-month history of multiple masses in the

Bullous pemphigoid induced by Hijama therapy (cupping).

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is described as a subepidermal blistering disorder, which is commonly reported among the elderly, particularly those older than 60 years of age. In this report, we present the case of a 41-year-old female patient with BP lesions that were initially detected at the site of Hijama therapy with a subsequent generalized spread. Punch biopsy from the lesions and perilesional direct immunofluorescence (DIF) demonstrated features of BP. The anti-BP180 level was 178 RU/mL, and the anti-BP230 level was negative. BP antigens at the site of Hijama caused an antibody response, whic

[Disadvantage of fire twinkling in cupping therapy: "flame-circling in the cup"].

Fire twinkling is the common method in cupping therapy. In the teaching materials of acupuncture and moxibustion, and the national standard, Standardized Manipulations of Acupuncture and Moxibustion-Part 5: Cupping Therapy, this cupping technique is operated by igniting an alcohol-soaked cotton ball held with a forceps, placing it inside the cup, taking it out after "turning around in several circles", and placing the cup on the selected area. Based on the clinical experience of chief physician LI Yan, a high-efficient and safe fire twinkling was developed. Clamping the middle part of the cott

Heavy Metals, Trace Elements, and Smoking Biomarkers in Venous and Cupping Blood Before and After Wet Cupping Therapy.

Wet cupping therapy (Hijama) is increasingly examined using biochemical endpoints, yet its toxic-metal and trace-element profile in smokers remains poorly defined. This paired three-sample study investigated serum toxic metals, essential trace elements, metal-derived indices, and smoking-exposure biomarkers in 60 adult male smokers undergoing wet cupping. Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while nicotine and cotinine were assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detect

Attentional Bias Toward Cupping Therapy Marks: An Eye-Tracking Study.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the many medical benefits, cupping therapy can be difficult for some patients due to unpleasant marks on the skin. As patients are afraid of the potential painful sensation from cupping therapy, the skin reactions might produce vigilance for treatment as pain-related information. We investigated whether individuals show negative emotions and attentional bias toward pain-related residual marks from cupping therapy on the body using an eye-tracking method. METHODS: Fifty pain-free volunteers were presented with four different kinds of visual stimulation, such as the back or f

Iatrogenic artefacts attributable to traditional cupping therapy in a shotgun fatality.

Cupping is a traditional treatment method that has been used for thousands of years to diminish pain, restore appetite and improve digestion, remove tendency to faint or remove 'bad blood' from the body. The suction of the cup is created by fire or mechanical devices. This procedure may result in circular erythema, petechiae, purpura, ecchymosis, burns and may be mistaken for trauma-related ecchymosis or livor mortis. Forty-year-old male was died by shotgun injuries in the same day of the wounding. Circular ecchymoses were observed on the forehead, within the scalp of occipital region, the bac
