Homeostatic Coupling of Cortical and Brainstem Delta Rhythms in Sleeping Infant Rats.

The emergence of the cortical delta rhythm (1-4 Hz) during quiet sleep (QS) is a major milestone in brain development. In rats, this milestone is achieved between 8 and 12 d of postnatal (P) age. We previously reported an age-dependent increase in delta-rhythmic activity in the medullary parafacial zone (PZ) that is synchronized with cortical delta and entrained by breathing. Here, we ask whether this long-distance synchrony persists in response to perturbations to sleep homeostasis or respiration. Using male and female P12 rats, we investigated the coupling strength between the frontal cortex

Abnormal Resting-State EEG delta and alpha rhythms in Huntington's and Alzheimer's Diseases: An exploratory study.

OBJECTIVES: This exploratory study tested the hypothesis that Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by distinct abnormalities in resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms compared to Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Clinical and rsEEG data were collected from 35 patients with HD, 81 patients with AD, and 102 healthy controls (HC). The rsEEG cortical source activations from 30 electrodes were estimated using eLORETA and were harmonized across clinical sites. RESULTS: Compared to the HC group, both the HD and AD groups showed widespread increases in rsEEG delta source activa

Neural mechanisms of rhythm-based temporal prediction: Delta phase-locking reflects temporal predictability but not rhythmic entrainment.

Predicting the timing of upcoming events enables efficient resource allocation and action preparation. Rhythmic streams, such as music, speech, and biological motion, constitute a pervasive source for temporal predictions. Widely accepted entrainment theories postulate that rhythm-based predictions are mediated by synchronizing low-frequency neural oscillations to the rhythm, as indicated by increased phase concentration (PC) of low-frequency neural activity for rhythmic compared to random streams. However, we show here that PC enhancement in scalp recordings is not specific to rhythms but is

Abnormalities in the absolute power of Delta and Alpha rhythms in the frontal lobe of patients suffering from psychosomatic disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Psychosomatic disorders (somatic symptom disorder - SSD) constitute a heterogeneous group of medical conditions characterized by somatic symptoms without explained somatic causes. Due to the complexity of symptoms, they present a significant medical, social and economic challenge, and diagnosing and treating these disorders remains a substantial clinical challenge. The aim of the conducted research was an attempt to identify characteristic patterns in the surface-level brain bioelectrical activity of individuals experiencing psychosomatic disorders. The obtained results may contrib

Sensation of breathlessness and respiratory oxygen cost during cycle exercise with and without conscious entrainment of the breathing rhythm.

The conscious entrainment of respiratory rhythm to exercise rhythm (ENT) has been hypothesized to alleviate breathing discomfort and reduce the oxygen (O2) cost of ventilation with a resulting decrease in total O2 uptake (VO2) during rhythmic exercise. This hypothesis has been tested in the study reported here. Eight female subjects performed cycle exercise at 50 rpm under two work load conditions of 40% and 60% of maximal VO2. During a 30-min exercise period at each work load, each subject was asked to breathe under two conditions for 15 min each: (1) spontaneously (non-ENT run), and (2) deli

Evaluation of electroencephalography biomarkers for Angelman syndrome during overnight sleep.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the maternal copy of the UBE3A gene. AS is characterized by intellectual disability, impaired speech and motor skills, epilepsy, and sleep disruptions. Multiple treatment strategies to re-express functional neuronal UBE3A from the dormant paternal allele were successful in rodent models of AS and have now moved to early phase clinical trials in children. Developing reliable and objective AS biomarkers is essential to guide the design and execution of current and future clinical trials. Our prior wor

[The functional status of the brain in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm].

We performed electroencephalography to 11 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm in order to investigate the functional status of the brain. The relative potency (RP) of the main rhythms (alpha, beta, teta and delta) was increased, as well as the beta/alpha activation ratio. The increase of low-frequency rhythms (delta and teta) indicates the brain cortex hypoxia. The high-frequency reactivity of the brain (alpha- and beta-rhythms) was decreased in such patients, which was probably due to the decreased sensitivity of the receptor zone of the upper respiratory tract.

[Phase amplitude coupling analysis of local field potentials in working memory of rats affected by transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation].

Transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation is a new non-invasive neuromodulation technology, in which the induced electric field generated by the coupling effect of ultrasound and static magnetic field are used to regulate the neural rhythm oscillation activity in the corresponding brain region. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation on the information transfer and communication in neuronal clusters during memory. In the experiment, twenty healthy adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into a control group (fiv

Evoked mid-frontal activity predicts cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a major feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the pathophysiology remains unknown. One potential mechanism is abnormal low-frequency cortical rhythms which engage cognitive functions and are deficient in PD. We tested the hypothesis that mid-frontal delta/theta rhythms predict cognitive dysfunction in PD. METHOD: We recruited 100 patients with PD and 49 demographically similar control participants who completed a series of cognitive control tasks, including the Simon, oddball and interval-timing tasks. We focused on cue-evoked delta (1-4 Hz) and theta (

[Possible mechanism of the thalamic pacemaker of alpha-rhythm and fusiform activity].

Proceedings from the analysis of known experimental data on theta-rhythm (fusiform activity) a determinate model of its generator is proposed. It is based on the mechanism of beats frequencies. The model consists of 2 united identical moduli generating harmonic (rhythmical) oscillations alpha-rhythms of approximating frequencies v1 and v2 = v1 + delta v. The working regime of the generator is determined by the trigger pulse frequency. The proposed quantitative relationships between theta-rhythm parameters--T, n and frequencies of constituent oscillations v and delta v are checked up by analysi

Unusual EEG patterns.

Some of the unusual patterns that can be encountered on the EEG are described briefly. The patterns are grouped according to the predominant frequencies involved and/or by distinctive morphology or distribution. Those involving predominantly the alpha frequency range are alpha squeak, retained alpha, alpha-delta sleep, unilateral decrease in reactivity of alpha activity, and extreme spindles. The patterns involving the beta frequency range are the fast alpha variant, posterior temporal fast activity in children, the fast spiky spindle variant, central fast activity, and diffuse paroxysmal or c

The cerebellum exploits a thalamic carrier frequency to refine motor behaviors.

Despite enabling nearly all cerebellar-cortical communication, how the thalamus processes and interacts with cerebellar activity remains unclear. We found a pronounced 1-5 Hz (delta) rhythm in the thalamic membrane potential and cerebellothalamocortical local field potentials during nonmoving periods in behaving mice. We show, using photometry, multielectrode recordings, closed-loop stimulation, and dynamic clamp, that CaV3.1-dependent resonance of thalamic neurons facilitates transmission of delta-rhythm cerebellar activity to the cortex. Knockout of CaV3.1 in cerebellar-thalamic neurons dimi

EEG spectra in dyslexic and control boys during resting conditions.

We studied the resting eyes open and eyes closed EEG in carefully screened samples of 9-13-year-old dyslexic and control boys within a 2-cohort cross-validation design with repeat testing 1-3 years later. We found: no difference between groups in delta or theta activity in either cohort or in repeat testing 1-3 years later; in the dyslexics, decreased beta (19-24 c/sec) activity at bilateral central, parietal and mid-temporal leads referenced to vertex; inconsistent group differences in the alpha band: the first cohort dyslexics had lower alpha power than did the controls, but there was no gro

Intracellular evidence for incompatibility between spindle and delta oscillations in thalamocortical neurons of cat.

Recent studies have revealed that the thalamus does not only generate spindle oscillations (7-14 Hz), but that it also participates in the genesis of a slower (less than 4 Hz) rhythm within the frequency range of delta waves on the electroencephalogram. In thalamic cells, delta is an intrinsic oscillation consisting of low-threshold spikes alternating with afterhyperpolarizing potentials. It is known from electroencephalographic recordings in humans and animals that slow or delta waves prevail during late sleep stages, whereas spindle oscillations are characteristic for the early stages of sle

Melatonin advances the circadian timing of EEG sleep and directly facilitates sleep without altering its duration in extended sleep opportunities in humans.

The rhythm of plasma melatonin originating from the pineal gland and driven by the circadian pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus is closely associated with the circadian (approximately 24 h) variation in sleep propensity and sleep spindle activity in humans. We investigated the contribution of melatonin to variation in sleep propensity, structure, duration and EEG activity in a protocol in which sleep was scheduled to begin during the biological day, i.e. when endogenous melatonin concentrations are low. The two 14 day trials were conducted in an environmental scheduling facility.

[A case of intermittent ventricular pre-excitation syndrome with a Mahaim fiber].

A 61 year-old woman with intermittent ventricular pre-excitation syndrome using a Mahaim fiber was reported. The electrocardiogram showed QRS-complex with small delta wave (100 msec in QRS width) or without small delta wave (80 msec in QRS width). On electrophysiological study, during sinus rhythm, A-H interval was 100 msec. H-V intervals were 25 msec in QRS-complex with small delta wave and 45 msec in QRS-complex without small delta wave. From these findings, it was considered that the small delta wave was produced by a Mahaim fiber.

Resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms depend on sex in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's and Lewy Body diseases: An exploratory study.

Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are more prevalent in males than females. Furthermore, they typically showed abnormally high delta (< 4 Hz) and low alpha (8-10 Hz) rhythms from resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that those abnormalities may depend on the patient's sex. An international database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets for cognitively unimpaired older (Healthy; N = 49; 24 females), PDD (N = 39; 13 females), and DLB (N = 38; 15 females) participants. Each group was stratified into matched

Effects of a number of short peptides isolated from the brain of the hibernating ground squirrel on the EEG and behavior in rats.

Intracerebroventricular administration of the peptides kyotorphin (Tyr-Arg), neokyotorphin (Thr-Ser-Lys-Tyr-Arg), and Asp-Tyr at doses of 4 and 8 micrograms altered the behavior of rats in a manner similar to that seen after similar administration of brain fractions from hibernating ground squirrels (Citellus undulatus), which contained these peptides; there were increases in orientational reactions, increases in the frequency of stereotypical scratching movements, grooming, yawning, hiccuping, and sneezing. Animals became drowsy after 15-20 min. Peptides and brain fractions also had similar e
