Neoplastic meningitis-related prognostic significance of the Karnofsky performance status.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic significance of Karnofsky performance status in neoplastic meningitis (NM) has not been demonstrated in patient groups similarly matched for known prognostic variables. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of performance status on survival in NM. DESIGN: Retrospective comparison. SETTING: A university tertiary medical center. PATIENTS: Two well-matched cohorts with cytologically positive NM with (n = 30; group A) and without (n = 30; group B) independence in activities of daily living as defined by a Karnofsky performance status score of 70 or greater or less than

Evaluation of patients with advanced cancer using the Karnofsky performance status.

The Karnofsky Performance Status Scale (KPS) was designed to measure the level of patient activity and medical care requirements. It is a general measure of patient independence and has been widely used as a general assessment of patient with cancer. Although there is a long history of use of the KPS for judging cancer patients, its reliability and validity have been assumed without formal investigation. The interrater reliability of the KPS was investigated in two ways, both of which gave evidence of moderately high reliability. The patients evaluated in their home were usually assigned a low

Quality of life in patients with intracranial tumors on the basis of Karnofsky's performance status.

This prospective clinical trial (1983-1989) compares life-quality scores according to Karnofsky in patients with intra-cranial who had been operated upon. Karnofsky's performance status was evaluated during a follow-up period of 36 months. The patients were between 20 to 77 years of age; 132 patients had an astrocytoma grade III or IV; 42 patients with brain metastases were investigated; 72 had an astrocytoma grade I + II, and 144 had a meningioma. The median survival in patients with astrocytomas grade III or IV was 12 months; a short period with nearly normal activity (Karnofsky score 75) wa

Karnofsky Performance Status Is Associated with Patient and Graft Survival After Liver Retransplantation.

BACKGROUND: The impact of Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), a clinical measure of functional status, on liver retransplantation (re-LT) outcomes, is unknown. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing database of adults who underwent re-LT from January 1, 2006, to December 3, 2021, to assess the association between KPS and re-LT outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 3144 re-LT recipients were included (68% male; mean age, 52.5 ± 11.1 years). The mean Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score at re-LT was 27.5 ± 10.6, and the median time between LT and re-L

Long-term Karnofsky performance status and neurological outcome in patients with neurohypophyseal germinomas.

Long-term posttreatment Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) and neurological status of 16 patients with neurohypophyseal (NH) germinomas were retrospectively analysed, in order to deduce the best treatment modality to achieve a good outcome. The average age at treatment was 15.5 years (rouge 6-26) and they were followed up for 107.3 months (26-209). The KPS averaged 81.5 (0-100). Three patients were below 60 in the KPS. The first one had hemiparesis due to a delayed cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and the second became indifferent and inactive with recent memory loss. The third died from margin

A comparative analysis of the modified Rankin Scale, Karnofsky Performance Status and Kurtzke expanded disability status scale in the perioperative management of patients with brainstem cavernous malformations.

BACKGROUND: The neurological conditions of brainstem cerebral cavernous malformation (BCM) patients are usually ascertained using Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) or the modified Rankin scale (mRS). However, these scales do not reflect slight changes in brainstem function, because neither KPS nor mRS includes brainstem symptoms such as worsening of swallowing or diplopia. The main problem when managing the BCM patients is that we can neither systematically record neurological changes nor conduct clinical outcome investigations of BCM due to the lack of an adequately detailed assessment syste

Health-related quality of life in long-term survivors with Grade II gliomas: the contribution of disease recurrence and Karnofsky Performance Status.

OBJECTIVE: Although the number of long-term survivors of glioma has increased, there has been little research on the health-related quality of life of long-term survivors of Grade II glioma following treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In this study, we aimed to document the health-related quality of life of people diagnosed with Grade II glioma who had survived >10 years with no evidence of disease at the time of the health-related quality of life survey. METHODS: To investigate the health-related quality of life of Grade II glioma survivors without evidence of disease, we

A Karnofsky Performance Status-Based Risk Score Improves Prediction of Post-Sepsis Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Multicohort Study From Uganda.

OBJECTIVES: Sepsis survivors worldwide face a high risk of death after hospitalization. In sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly 40% of all sepsis cases occur, post-discharge mortality is a major contributor to poor sepsis outcomes. In this context, stratification of sepsis survivors at high risk for post-discharge mortality is needed to guide targeted follow-up care. We sought to determine the performance of Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS)-based risk stratification for predicting post-discharge mortality among adults surviving sepsis hospitalization in Uganda. DESIGN: Analysis of two prospecti

Karnofsky performance status and visual analogue scale scores are simple indicators for quality of life in long-term AYA survivors who received allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells transplantation in childhood.

The purpose of this study was to investigate Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores to explain which domains in the standardized self-reported quality of life (QOL) are instrumental for long-term hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors. We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire study on 221 survivors with allogeneic-HSCT in 28 pediatric centers. Patient-reported QOL was assessed at a single time point using the 36-item Short-Form Survey (SF-36), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplant (FACT-BMT)

Assessment of peri- and postoperative complications and Karnofsky-performance status in head and neck cancer patients after radiation or chemoradiation that underwent surgery with regional or free-flap reconstruction for salvage, palliation, or to improve function.

BACKGROUND: Surgery after (chemo)radiation (RCTX/RTX) is felt to be plagued with a high incidence of wound healing complications reported to be as high as 70%. The additional use of vascularized flaps may help to decrease this high rate of complications. Therefore, we examined within a retrospective single-institutional study the peri--and postoperative complications in patients who underwent surgery for salvage, palliation or functional rehabilitation after (chemo)radiation with regional and free flaps. As a second study end point the Karnofsky performance status (KPS) was determined preopera

[Home parenteral nutrition in patients with malignant bowel obstruction. Ethical considerations].

Background: patients with cancer are one of the main group of patients on home parenteral nutrition (HPN). Patients with malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) represent a challenging group when considering HPN. At the Ethics Working Group of SENPE ethical considerations on this subject were reviewed and a guidelines proposal was made. Methods: a literature search was done and a full set of questions arose: When, if ever, is HPN indicated for patients with MBO? How should the training program be? When withdrawal of HPN should be considered? Other questions should be also taken into consideration. M
