Self-assembly of phycocyanin-nanochitin complexes for antioxidant Pickering emulsions.

This study developed a Pickering stabilizer based on polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) of phycocyanin (PC) and nanochitin (NCh), in order to combine the antioxidant functionality of PC with the nanofibrillar structural support of NCh. At an optimal 1:4 mass ratio, enthalpy-driven complexation yielded a unique "bead-on-string" nanostructure, which resulted in an optimal three-phase contact angle of 80.63 ± 1.29° and facilitated the formation of a thick, viscoelastic interfacial film, as revealed by QCM-D. The complexes exhibited a dual-stabilization mechanism, combining interfacial film reinforc

Chitosan Sponges for Efficient Accumulation and Controlled Release of C-Phycocyanin.

The paper proposed a new porous material for wound healing based on chitosan and C-phycocyanin (C-PC). In this work, C-PC was extracted from the cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis biomass and purified through ammonium sulfate precipitation. The obtained C-PC with a purity index (PI) of 3.36 ± 0.24 was loaded into a chitosan sponge from aqueous solutions of various concentrations (250, 500, and 1000 mg/L). According to the FTIR study, chitosan did not form new bonds with C-PC, but acted as a carrier. The encapsulation efficiency value exceeded 90%, and the maximum loading capacity was 172.67 ±

C-phycocyanin: a biliprotein with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.

Phycocyanin (Pc) is a phycobiliprotein that has been recently reported to exhibit a variety of pharmacological properties. In this regard, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and hepatoprotective effects have been experimentally attributed to Pc. When it was evaluated as an antioxidant in vitro, it was able to scavenge alkoxyl, hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals and to react with peroxinitrite (ONOO(-);) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Pc also inhibits microsomal lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(+2)-ascorbic acid or the free radical initiator 2,2' azobis (2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride (

C-phycocyanin: a potent peroxyl radical scavenger in vivo and in vitro.

C-Phycocyanin (from Spirulina platensis) effectively inhibited CCl(4)-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver in vivo. Both native and reduced phycocyanin significantly inhibited peroxyl radical-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes and the inhibition was concentration dependent with an IC(50) of 11.35 and 12.7 microM, respectively. The radical scavenging property of phycocyanin was established by studying its reactivity with peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals and also by competition kinetics of crocin bleaching. These studies have demonstrated that phycocyanin is a potent peroxyl radi

Improved pH stability, heat stability, and functionality of phycocyanin after PEGylation.

Phycocyanin (PC), a spirulina-derived protein-chromophore complex, suffers from poor techno-functional properties and is highly susceptible to aggregation and color changes upon heating and pH fluctuations. We tackled these issues by modifying PC via PEGylation. Electrophoresis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved successful conjugation of methoxy PEG (mPEG) chains on PC after PEGylation. Circular dichroism indicated highly ordered folding states adopted by PEGylated PC, which we attributed to the mPEG chains on the protein surface that sterically stabilized the protein structure

Phycocyanin Reduces Proliferation of Melanoma Cells through Downregulating GRB2/ERK Signaling.

As a type of functional food additive, phycocyanin is shown to have a potential antineoplastic property. However, its underlying anticancer mechanism in melanoma cells remains unknown. We previously reported a 35S in vivo/vitro labeling analysis for dynamic proteomic (SiLAD) technology. It could exclusively detect protein synthesis rates via pulse labeling of newly expressed proteins by 35S, providing a high time-resolution method for analysis of protein variations. In the present study, we performed a time course analysis in A375 melanoma cells after phycocyanin treatment using SiLAD. Protein

C-Phycocyanin Ameliorates Mitochondrial Fission and Fusion Dynamics in Ischemic Cardiomyocyte Damage.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a predominant risk factor in ischemic heart disease, in which the imbalance of mitochondrial fusion and fission deteriorates mitochondrial function and might lead to cardiomyocyte death. C-phycocyanin (C-pc), an active component from blue-green algae, such as Spirulina platensis, has been reported to have anti-apoptosis and anti-oxidation functions. In this study, the effects of C-pc on mitochondrial dynamics of cardiomyocytes was examined using an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model in H9c2 cells, an in vitro model to study the ischemia in the h

Evaluation of Antibiofilm Efficacy of C-Phycocyanin From Spirulina Species Against Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen reported to cause both systemic and mucosal infections. The characteristic morphological transition and complex biofilm formation significantly contribute to its virulence and resistance to antifungal agents. This increases the pressing demand for new, safe antifungal agents. This study examined the anti-biofilm and anti-virulence activities of C-Phycocyanin (C-PC), a natural photosynthetic pigment protein produced from Spirulina. C-PC demonstrated an inhibitory effect on biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner with a minimal biofilm in
