Previous TBC lesions, diabetes and use of corticosteroids are recognised as risk factors for developing long-standing disease caused by Schizophyllum commune. In the case report presented in this work, S. commune was isolated from an inflamed bronchogenous cyst of previously immunocompetent patient. The isolated mould failed to sporulate and identification was achieved by nucleotide sequencing.

Two mutants of the hymenomycete Schizophyllum commune, unable to use acetate as the sole carbon source for growth, were isolated. Growth of the mutants on a glucose minimal medium was only slightly inhibited by sodium azide. Genetic analysis revealed mutations in different chromosomal genes in the respective mutants. Both these mutants exhibited a high cyanide-insensitive endogenous respiration. The inhibition of the respiration by 8-hydroxyquinoline showed the mutants to respire predominantly by an alternative respiratory pathway observed in many fungal species, but not in the hymenomycetes s

BACKGROUND: Schizophyllum commune is one of the causative agents of basidiomycosis including disorders such as allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis, allergic fungal sinusitis, and mucoid impaction of bronchi, the incidence of those of which has been increasing. These mycoses are difficult to diagnose because only a limited number of diagnostic tools are currently available. The biggest problem is that no specific antigens of S. commune have been identified to enable serodiagnosis of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we attempted to identify a major antigen of S. commune to establish a relia

A six-year-old female Labrador retriever dog was suffering from osteomyelitis in her hindlimb. A puncture wound caused by a rotted bamboo stick was presumed as the source of infection. The dog suffered from pre-existing aortic stenosis, but otherwise exhibited no significant abnormality in her systemic conditions excluding claudication of the left hindlimb. The results of cytology and pathological examinations of biopsy samples revealed the diagnosis of mycotic osteomyelitis in this dog. Mycological and DNA tests showed the pathogen as the mushroom Schizophyllum commune. Antibiotic sensitivity

In December 1989, a 72-year-old woman was hospitalized with atelectasis in the left lower lobe. The atelectasis resolved after bronchoscopic removal of impacted mucous plugs. Histopathological examination showed pulmonary mycosis. Microscopy suggested that a species of Aspergillus was responsible, but no definite diagnosis was made. After treatment with flucytosine and nebulized amphotericin, the patient's condition improved and she was discharged. In the middle of August 1994, she visited a local hospital complaining of fatigue. Eosinophilia (22%) was detected, and a few days later she visite

We describe the first known Japanese patient with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia caused by Schizophyllum commune. The patient presented to Social Insurance Tagawa Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan with cough, wheezing, dyspnoea, and fever. Computed tomograms of the chest showed bilateral areas of consolidation with air bronchograms as well as interstitial infiltrates in the upper lobe, without ectasia of proximal bronchi. Fibreoptic bronchoscopy revealed no impacted mucus in the bronchi. BAL fluid from the right upper lobe yielded an increased total cell count with a high percentage of eosinophils. A t

PURPOSE: We report a case of mycotic keratitis caused by a rare fungus Schizophyllum commune.
METHODS: Clinical examination, slit-lamp examination, and microbiological evaluation of the corneal ulcer were done, and its treatment outcome was studied. The fungal etiology was established by conventional microbiological techniques, polymerase chain reaction and speciation by DNA sequencing.
RESULTS: Corneal scraping showed the presence of fungal filaments. The fungus was identified as S. commune based on DNA sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region. The organism was susceptibl

BACKGROUND: As an opportunistic pathogenic fungus, Schizophyllum has been rarely reported to infect humans. By reporting a case of definite diagnosis of Schizophyllum infection, we aim to improve clinicians' understanding of this bacterium.
METHODS: By reporting a case with cough and sputum as the main manifestations, after empirical antiinfective chest CT suggesting a more progressive inflammatory lesion and a mass-like lesion in the paratracheal area of the main airways, a diagnosis of Schizophyllum infection was finally made by bronchoscopy with the delivery of metagenomic next-generation

The incidence of pulmonary nodules after cardiac transplantation is not uncommon, and prompt diagnostic procedures are necessary to minimize disease-related morbidity and mortality. We report a 56-year-old woman who was found to have bilateral pulmonary nodules four months after cardiac transplantation. The microorganism was identified with a molecular diagnostic method as Schizophyllum commune, which had not been reported in English literature as a pathogen inducing pulmonary nodules after transplantation. She remained asymptomatic during the therapeutic period and the pulmonary nodules resol

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing interest in the association between the severity of asthma and fungal sensitization, and lung function decline in relation to mold and dampness in the home has recently been reported. This study was performed to determine the correlation between sensitization to Schizophyllum commune and decline of lung function, and to elucidate the outcomes and risk factors, especially from Schizophyllum allergy.
METHODS: The medical records of 50 patients with asthma who satisfied the following inclusion criteria were collected and reviewed retrospectively: (1) at least 5 yea

We report a case of bronchopneumonia due to Schizophyllum commune in an immunocompromised patient. While this fungus rarely causes disease in humans, it has been reported in association with several clinical entities and lung disorders. A 59-year-old white man with a gastric carcinoma was admitted to S. Giovanni Battista Hospital (Turin, Italy). Three days after the admission, he developed a bronchopneumonia, which was diagnosed through the use of X-ray and showed an abnormal infiltrative shadow. Samples of bronchial aspirate were collected for laboratory microbiological investigation. Direct

We present two cases with a history of trauma to the cornea and after a few days patients developed symptoms of corneal ulcers with one showing hypopyon as well. Due to strong suspicion of fungal keratitis both cases were treated with topical and intravenously voriconazole. Fungal culture showed white fluffy growth which was identified as Schizophyllum commune by conventional and molecular methods. In both cases surgical intervention was essential. Therapeutic keratoplasty was done in both cases but failed. Unfortunately, both patients lost vision in the affected eyes.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic fungus Schizophyllum sp. can cause allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis in humans. Sinus and lung infections due to Schizophyllum sp. have been reported globally; however, no case of hypertrophic pachymeningitis due to this pathogen has been reported yet. Herein, we describe for the first time, a case of hypertrophic pachymeningitis due to Schizophyllum sp.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman visited the hospital with chief complaints of headache, right trigeminal neuralgia (third branch), ataxic gait, and deafness in the right ear

BACKGROUND: Schizophyllum commune, a basidiomycetous fungus, is a common invader of rotten wood. This fungus rarely causes mycotic disease in humans, especially cutaneous infection. In this paper, we describe the first case of cutaneous granuloma caused by S. commune in a Chinese woman.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old female with a two-year history of erythema, papules, nodules, and scales on her sole of left foot was presented to our outpatient center. Samples were obtained by the scraping of lesion and for light microscopy. Hyphae were observed by microscopic examination. We carried out a

A 54-year-old woman was admitted for cough, sputum, and an abnormal chest X-ray shadow. Bronchoscopy showed mucoid impaction of the bronchi (MIB). Histopathologic evidence of mucous plugs was consistent with one component of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. Schizophyllum commune (S. commune) was identified. Two attempts at removal of the mucous plugs were unsuccessful. Itraconazole was then administered, and the mucous plugs disappeared. There are few reports of MIB due to S. commune; we herein report a case of MIB due to S. commune infection.

BACKGROUND: Allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) is an allergic disease caused by type I and type III hypersensitivity to environmental fungi. Schizophyllum commune, a basidiomycete fungus, is one of the most common fungi that causes non-Aspergillus ABPM.
OBJECTIVE: Herein, we attempted to clarify the clinical characteristics of ABPM caused by S. commune (ABPM-Sc) compared with those of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA).
METHODS: Patients with ABPM-Sc or ABPA were recruited from a nationwide survey in Japan, a multicenter cohort, and a fungal database at the Medical Mycology
