Inner speech captures the perception of external speech.

Talking silently to ourselves occupies much of our mental lives, yet the mechanisms underlying this experience remain unclear. The following experiments provide behavioral evidence that the auditory content of inner speech is provided by corollary discharge. Corollary discharge is the motor system's prediction of the sensory consequences of its actions. This prediction can bias perception of other sensations, pushing percepts to match with prediction. The two experiments below show this bias induced by inner speech, demonstrating that inner speech causes external sounds to be heard as similar

Speech perception in children with speech output disorders.

Research in the field of speech production pathology is dominated by describing deficits in output. However, perceptual problems might underlie, precede, or interact with production disorders. The present study hypothesizes that the level of the production disorders is linked to level of perception disorders, thus lower-order production problems (such as childhood apraxia of speech; CAS) are linked to lower-order perception problems and higher-order production problems (phonological disorder; PD) are linked to higher-order perception problems. For this, various perception tasks were administer

Speech Perception in Ménière Disease.

Introduction  Ménière disease (MD) affects the inner ear, comprising the cochlea and semicircular canals. Symptoms include severe incapacitating vertigo, nausea, vomit, aural fullness, and sensorineural hearing loss - in which speech discrimination and intelligibility are impaired and can be quantified with speech audiometry. Objective  To investigate the influence of the stimuli presentation level in speech audiometry and the quality of life in adults with and without a diagnosis of MD. Method  Two groups were formed with nine individuals each - one with and the other without MD. The Speech R

A causal test of the motor theory of speech perception: a case of impaired speech production and spared speech perception.

The debate about the causal role of the motor system in speech perception has been reignited by demonstrations that motor processes are engaged during the processing of speech sounds. Here, we evaluate which aspects of auditory speech processing are affected, and which are not, in a stroke patient with dysfunction of the speech motor system. We found that the patient showed a normal phonemic categorical boundary when discriminating two non-words that differ by a minimal pair (e.g., ADA-AGA). However, using the same stimuli, the patient was unable to identify or label the non-word stimuli (usin

Speech Envelope Enhancement Instantaneously Effaces Atypical Speech Perception in Dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing evidence exists that poor speech perception abilities precede the phonological deficits typically observed in dyslexia, a developmental disorder in learning to read. Impaired processing of dynamic features of speech, such as slow amplitude fluctuations and transient acoustic cues, disrupts effortless tracking of the speech envelope and constrains the development of adequate phonological skills. In this study, a speech envelope enhancement (EE) strategy was implemented to reduce speech perception deficits by students with dyslexia. The EE emphasizes onset cues and reinfor

Speech perception and speech intelligibility in children after cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term speech perception and speech intelligibility of congenitally and prelingually deaf children after cochlear implantation. It was a longitudinal study following 63 congenitally or prelingually deaf children up to 5 years after implantation. They each received a nucleus multichannel cochlear implant before they were 10 years old. METHODS: Perception is evaluated using the Test for the Evaluation of Voice Perception and Production (TEPP) and concerns closed- and open-set word and sentence perception without lip-reading. The intelligibility is

[Pathophysiology of auditory and speech perception].

Auditory perception or hearing can be defined as the interpretation of sensory evidence, produced by the ears in response to sound, in terms of the events that caused the sound. We do not hear a window but we may hear a window closing. We do not hear a dog but we may hear a dog barking. And we do not hear a person but we may hear a person talking. Hearing impairment can result in anxiety or stress in everyday life. Pure-tone hearing loss (or threshold shift) is a measure of hearing impairment. Aging and excessive noise are the main causes of hearing impairment. Speech perception is another con

Categorical speech perception in cerebellar disorders.

Keele and Ivry (1991) considered the cerebellum an "internal clock" responsible for temporal computations both in the motor and in the perceptual domain. These authors, therefore, expected that the processing of durational parameters of the perceived acoustic speech signal such as voice onset time (VOT) depends upon the cerebellum as well. However, a preliminary investigation of Ivry and Gopal (1992) revealed unimpaired phoneme-boundary effects in cerebellar patients along a continuum of monosyllabic stimuli with systematically varied VOT (/ba/-/pa/). Since the energy of the aspiration noise p

Gaze dynamics of cued speech perception.

For many deaf people, lip-reading plays a major role in verbal communication. However, lip reading is inherently ambiguous and does not allow for a complete understanding of speech. The consequences of these limitations are significant, potentially impeding language, cognitive, and social development. Cued speech (CS) was developed to eliminate this ambiguity by supplementing lip-reading with hand gestures, giving access to the entire phonological content of speech through the visual modality alone. Despite its documented efficacy in enhancing linguistic and communicative abilities, the mechan

Speech perception, lexicality, and reading skill.

This study examined the interaction between speech perception and lexical information among a group of 7-year-old children, of which 26 were poor readers and 36 were good readers. The children's performance was examined on tasks assessing reading skill, phonological awareness, pseudoword repetition, and phoneme identification. Although good readers showed clearly defined categorical perception in the phoneme identification task for both the /bif/-/pif/ and the /bis/-/pis/ continua, the category boundary for /bif/-/pif/ was at longer VOTs than the boundary for /bis/-/pis/, which characterizes t

How does optical blur affect audiovisual speech perception and emotion perception?

This study investigated how optical blur affects the auditory-based perception of speech and emotion within a unified experimental paradigm. It is widely known that auditory judgments of speech and emotion are strongly influenced by visual information (e.g., the speaker's lip movements or facial expressions). However, it remains unclear to what extent such visual influence is modulated similarly across speech and emotion perception under visual degradation. We investigated this issue by using optical blur to degrade audiovisual stimuli, requiring participants to judge speech and emotion based

Speech Perception Profiles in Korean-Speaking Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) constitute a heterogeneous population, with speech difficulties arising from different loci within the speech processing system. Speech perception has long been implicated in SSD; however, previous findings remain mixed, partly due to differences in task demands and limited consideration of SSD subtypes. In particular, few studies have systematically examined speech perception across multiple contrast types that are explicitly structured around common developmental error patterns and across clinically defined SSD subgroups. Tinnitus selectively disrupts phoneme level speech perception.

Chronic subjective tinnitus has been linked to impaired speech-in-noise perception, yet its impact on phoneme level processing remains unclear. We assessed phoneme discrimination in 49 normal hearing participants (26 with chronic subjective tinnitus and 23 matched controls), with matched audiometric thresholds and supra-threshold processing, and found no statistically significant differences between groups on the assessed cognitive measures, using a two-alternative forced-choice identification task with fricatives (/s, ʃ/) and plosives (/ph, t/) presented in quiet and individualized noise cond

Speech-perception-in-noise deficits in dyslexia.

Speech perception deficits in developmental dyslexia were investigated in quiet and various noise conditions. Dyslexics exhibited clear speech perception deficits in noise but not in silence. Place-of-articulation was more affected than voicing or manner-of-articulation. Speech-perception-in-noise deficits persisted when performance of dyslexics was compared to that of much younger children matched on reading age, underscoring the fundamental nature of speech-perception-in-noise deficits. The deficits were not due to poor spectral or temporal resolution because dyslexics exhibited normal 'mask

[Speech perception development in children with dyslexia].

Several studies have indicated that dyslexics show a deficit in speech perception (SP). The main purpose of this research is to determine the development of SP in dyslexics and normal readers paired by grades from 2nd to 6th grade of primary school and to know whether the phonetic contrasts that are relevant for SP change during development, taking into account the individual differences. The achievement of both groups was compared in the phonetic tasks: voicing contrast, place of articulation contrast and manner of articulation contrast. The results showed that the dyslexic performed poorer t

Speech perception in individuals with auditory neuropathy.

PURPOSE: Speech perception in participants with auditory neuropathy (AN) was systematically studied to answer the following 2 questions: Does noise present a particular problem for people with AN? Can clear speech and cochlear implants alleviate this problem? METHOD: The researchers evaluated the advantage in intelligibility of clear speech over conversational speech in 13 participants with AN. Of these participants, 7 had received a cochlear implant. Eight sentence-recognition experiments were conducted to examine the clear speech advantage in 2 listening conditions (quiet and noise) using 4

The synergy between speech production and perception.

Speech intelligibility is known to be relatively unaffected by certain deformations of the acoustic spectrum. These include translations, stretching or contracting dilations, and shearing of the spectrum (represented along the logarithmic frequency axis). It is argued here that such robustness reflects a synergy between vocal production and auditory perception. Thus, on the one hand, it is shown that these spectral distortions are produced by common and unavoidable variations among different speakers pertaining to the length, cross-sectional profile, and losses of their vocal tracts. On the ot
