The Trail Making Test (TMT) is often used for screening cognitive impairments in substance abusers. A possible limitation of the TMT in clinical settings is that substance abusers may malinger and give poor effort. In this study, previously validated cutting scores for malingering were applied to a sample of 7689 substance abusers (primary drug of abuse-number of subjects: Alcohol-1000, Marijuana-259, Hallucinogen-128, Cocaine/crack-4306, Heroin-1548, Narcotics/other opiates-191, Sedatives-72, Amphetamines-185) in drug abuse treatment programs. A mixed race sample was drawn from electronic fil

The present study is the first independent investigation of the Comprehensive Trail Making Test (CTMT; Reynolds, 2002) with both clinical and non-clinical samples. We examined convergent and divergent validity by exploring relationships between the CTMT and other measures. Discriminant validity was examined by comparing CTMT scores of non-clinical and clinical groups. Results indicate that the CTMT was largely unrelated to measures of processing speed and nonverbal reasoning, verbal processing, and psychiatric symptoms. The CTMT Composite score was able to differentiate between clinical and no

BACKGROUND: Psychometrically sound instruments to assess cognitive flexibility in people with Down Syndrome (DS) are lacking. The Trail Making Test (TMT) is well-established but requires reading letters and numerals, limiting its applicability for people with DS.
AIMS: To evaluate the psychometric properties and developmental sensitivity of a newly developed TMT adaptation without letters and numerals - the Dice Trails Test (DTT).
METHODS: The DTT was administered to 39 children (8-14 years, 46 % female) and 57 adults (18-57 years, 47 % female) with DS. We evaluated feasibility (proportion o

OBJECTIVE: The Trail Making Test (TMT) is commonly used worldwide to evaluate cognitive decline and car driving ability. However, it has received critique for its dependence on the Latin alphabet and thus, the risk of misclassifying some participants. Alphabet support potentially increases test validity by avoiding misclassification of executive dysfunction in participants with dyslexia and those with insufficient automatization of the Latin alphabet. However, Alphabet support might render the test less sensitive to set-shifting, thus compromising the validity of the test. This study compares

The use of non-traditional scores in neuropsychological assessment allows for pattern analysis of test performance, commonly referred to as Quantified Process Approach (QPA). In the present study, the QPA was taken to study error rates on the Trail Making Test (TMT) in 26 non-demented patients with classic motor neuron disease (cMND), who commonly present with impaired cognitive flexibility, and 26 matched healthy controls. Between-group comparisons revealed that cMND patients exhibited higher total error rates on the TMT Part B (TMT-B) relative to controls (p < 0.001), though no significant a

BACKGROUND: The Trail Making Test B (TMT-B) is indicative of cognitive flexibility and several other cognitive domains. Previous studies suggest that it might be associated with the risk of developing postoperative delirium, but evidence is limited and conflicting. We therefore aimed to replicate the association of preoperative TMT-B results with postoperative delirium.
METHODS: We included older adults (≥65 yr) scheduled for major surgery and without signs of dementia to participate in this binational two-centre longitudinal observational cohort study. Presurgical TMT-B scores were obtained.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE) on Trail Making Test (TMT) performance, with special focus on the discriminative potential of this test. We assessed TMT performance in patients diagnosed with CTE, patients with similar symptoms but no diagnosis, and healthy participants. Inferior performance was seen in CTE, and increasing age had a negative effect on TMT performance only for the CTE group. This effect was most pronounced in TMT-B. However, the ability of the TMT to identify CTE was low, whereas all healthy participants were identi

Aims The aim of the present study was to investigate the preoperative Trail Making Test (TMT) and its association with postoperative delirium. Materials and methods This cross-sectional, observational study consisted of 51 patients admitted to the surgical ward for any planned operative procedure. Consenting patients provided their sociodemographic information, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, and Trail Making Test (TMT) were applied. Results A total of 51 patients (66.7% male and 33.3% female) were categorized as the "normal" gro

We examined the Trail Making Test (TMT) in a sample of 767 participants with prodromal Huntington disease (prodromal HD) and 217 healthy comparisons to determine the contributions of motor, psychiatric, and cognitive changes to TMT scores. Eight traditional and derived TMT scores were also evaluated for their ability to differentiate prodromal participants closer to estimated age of diagnosis from those farther away and prodromal individuals from healthy comparisons. Results indicate that motor signs only mildly affected Part A, and psychiatric symptoms did not affect either part. Tests of per

BACKGROUND: Digital neuropsychological tests reliably capture real-time, process-based behavior that traditional paper/pencil tests cannot detect, enabling earlier detection of neurodegenerative illness. We assessed relations between informant-based subtle and mild functional decline and process-based features extracted from the digital Trail Making Test-Part B (dTMT-B).
METHODS: A total of 321 community-dwelling participants (56.0% female) were assessed with the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ) and the dTMT-B. Three FAQ groups were constructed: FAQ = 0 (unimpaired); FAQ = 1-4 (subtl

Background: Left-handed individuals may experience performance disadvantages in right-hand-oriented environments; however, these circumstances could also foster adaptability, potentially leading to greater executive function. Switching ability, a component of executive function, reflects flexibility in adjusting to environmental changes. Prior research on left-handers' executive function has yielded inconsistent results. Additionally, many tests have not controlled for confounding factors, such as attention, sequencing, and motor processes. Purpose: Accordingly, the present study aimed to exam

The speed of performance on Part A, Part B, and on an experimental version containing alphabetical series (Part A Alphabetic) of the Trail Making Test was studied with 19 children with reading disabilities and 34 controls from Grades 4 to 6. When the test was used in discriminant profile fashion, children with reading disabilities showed a deficit compared with control children on Part B relative to part A but did not relative to the new Part A Alphabetic. The results indicate that the performance of the children with reading disabilities on Part B is likely to be affected by their slowness on
