Anatomic pathways of peripancreatic fluid draining to mediastinum in recurrent acute pancreatitis: visible human project and CT study.

BACKGROUND: In past reports, researchers have seldom attached importance to achievements in transforming digital anatomy to radiological diagnosis. However, investigators have been able to illustrate communication relationships in the retroperitoneal space by drawing potential routes in computerized tomography (CT) images or a virtual anatomical atlas. We established a new imaging anatomy research method for comparisons of the communication relationships of the retroperitoneal space in combination with the Visible Human Project and CT images. Specifically, the anatomic pathways of peripancreat

Identification of elbow joint structures on cadaver sectioned images in various planes for radiologic analysis.

PURPOSE: Conventional imaging modalities, including MRI and ultrasonography, often fail to depict the intricate anatomy of the elbow in sufficient detail. This study presents high-resolution sectional and surface anatomical images to enhance understanding of elbow morphology and aid interpretation of MRI and ultrasound in clinical practice. METHODS: Sectioned images of a male cadaver from the Visible Korean dataset were analyzed. The cadaver was sectioned horizontally at 0.2-mm intervals and photographed to produce high-resolution (3040 × 2008 pixels), true-color images. Coronal and sagittal

Segmenting Brain Tissues from Chinese Visible Human Dataset by Deep-Learned Features with Stacked Autoencoder.

Cryosection brain images in Chinese Visible Human (CVH) dataset contain rich anatomical structure information of tissues because of its high resolution (e.g., 0.167 mm per pixel). Fast and accurate segmentation of these images into white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid plays a critical role in analyzing and measuring the anatomical structures of human brain. However, most existing automated segmentation methods are designed for computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging data, and they may not be applicable for cryosection images due to the imaging difference. In this paper,

Redefining all check ligaments of extraocular muscles using true color sectioned images.

PURPOSE: Visualizing the check ligaments of extraocular muscles is essential to understand their role as stabilizers of the extra-ocular muscles, acting as their antagonists. Although all extraocular muscles are expected to have corresponding check ligaments, this is not consistently documented in anatomical literature. This study aims to clarify the check ligaments using acquired high-resolution true color sectioned images and surface modeling. METHODS: From the sectioned images of one male cadaver, the check ligaments and related structures were outlined and surfaces models were reconstructe

Ultrasonographic images and correspondence with real color sectioned images of the upper limb.

PURPOSE: For basic training in ultrasonography (US), medical students and residents must learn cross-sectional anatomy. However, the present educational material is not sufficient to learn the sectional anatomy for US. This study aimed to provide a criterion for reading ambiguous structures on US images of upper limb through the sectioned images of Visible Korean. METHODS: US images of the right arm of a volunteer were scanned (28 planes). For comparison with US images, the sectioned images of the right upper limb (24 bits color, 0.5 mm intervals, 0.06 mm × 0.06 mm sized pixel) were used. Aft

Anatomically based computational models of the male and female pelvic floor and anal canal.

The understanding of the pelvic floor and anal canal, in the study of incontinence, has been limited by the inability to integrate both anatomy and physiology into a unified bioengineering model. However, this integration has been achieved in the study of other organs in the body, most notably the heart. In this study we construct three-dimensional anatomically realistic models of both the male and female pelvic floor and anal canal regions using similar techniques to those used in cardiac modelling. Anatomical data from the Visible Human Project was used to provide the anatomical positioning

Computer model for the optimization of AV and VV delay in cardiac resynchronization therapy.

An optimal electrode position, atrio-ventricular (AV) and interventricular (VV) delay in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improves its success. An optimization strategy does not yet exist. A computer model of the Visible Man and a patient heart was used to simulate an atrio-ventricular and a left bundle branch block with 0%, 20% and 40% reduction in interventricular conduction velocity, respectively. The minimum error between physiological excitation and pathology/therapy was automatically computed for 12 different electrode positions. AV and VV delay timing was adjusted accordingly. Th

Development of a computer-assisted cranial nerve simulation from the visible human dataset.

Advancements in technology and personal computing have allowed for the development of novel teaching modalities such as online web-based modules. These modules are currently being incorporated into medical curricula and, in some paradigms, have been shown to be superior to classroom instruction. We believe that these modules have the potential of significantly enriching anatomy education by helping students better appreciate spatial relationships, especially in areas of the body with greater anatomical complexity. Our objective was to develop an online module designed to teach the anatomy and

Interaction of radio frequency electromagnetic fields and passive metallic implants--a brief review.

During the last decade, use of radio frequency (RF) applications like mobile phones and other wireless devices, has increased remarkably. This has triggered numerous studies related to possible health risks due to the exposure of RF electromagnetic (EM) fields. One safety aspect is the coupling of EM fields with active and passive implants in the human body. While interactions with active implants have been quite extensively researched, only a few studies have focused on passive implants. The present article reviews interaction mechanisms and studies of passive metallic, that is, conductive, i

Three-dimensional surface models of detailed lumbosacral structures reconstructed from the Visible Korean.

Unlike volume models, surface models representing hollow, three-dimensional images have a small file size; allowing them to be displayed, rotated, and modified in real time. Therefore, surface models of lumbosacral structures can be effectively used for interactive simulation of, e.g., virtual lumbar puncture, virtual surgery of herniated lumbar discs, and virtual epidural anesthesia. In this paper, we present surface models of extensive lumbosacral structures which can be used in medical simulation systems. One-hundred and thirty-eight chosen structures included the spinal cord, lumbar and sa

Graphic and haptic modelling of the oesophagus for VR-based medical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Medical simulators with vision and haptic feedback have been applied to many medical procedures in recent years, due to their safe and repetitive nature for training. Among the many technical components of the simulators, realistic and interactive organ modelling stands out as a key issue for judging the fidelity of the simulation. This paper describes the modelling of an oesophagus for a real-time laparoscopic surgical simulator. METHODS: For realistic simulation, organ deformation and tissue cutting in the oesophagus are implemented with geometric organ models segmented from the

Detailed anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis of the visible human female.

We report on a virtual anatomical preparation of the abdomen and pelvis of the Visible Human Female (VHF) for laparoscopic surgery training. The detailed cross-sectional image data set from the U.S. National Library of Medicine was used as the basis to build an exemplary model of the female abdomen and pelvis. Segmentation software was developed to delineate organ outlines and more than 300 structures of interest, including organs, blood vessels, bones, muscles, and ligaments, have been segmented and three-dimensionally reconstructed. Analyzing the normal anatomy we found several variations an

Comparative study of thin sectional anatomical images from Chinese visible human data set and computed tomography images of superior mediastinum.

The structures of superior mediastinum and their spatial relationships are complex and difficult to master. This study aimed to compare visualization of the superior mediastinum based on computed tomography (CT) images and on the thin sections of the Chinese visible human (CVH) data set to provide a sectional anatomical basis for diagnostic imaging of superior mediastinal pathology. CVH sections of the mediastinum of a 35-year old male were compared with plain and enhanced CT images of a 45-year old male without apparent abnormalities in the upper chest. In addition, a three-dimensional model

Community-based control of the brown dog tick in a region with high rates of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, 2012-2013.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) has emerged as a significant public health risk on American Indian reservations in eastern Arizona. During 2003-2012, more than 250 RMSF cases and 19 deaths were documented among Arizona's American Indian population. The high case fatality rate makes community-level interventions aimed at rapid and sustained reduction of ticks urgent. Beginning in 2012, a two year pilot integrated tick prevention campaign called the RMSF Rodeo was launched in a ∼ 600-home tribal community with high rates

Development of an augmented virtuality framework using user-defined passthrough surfaces.

An augmented virtuality framework is presented in which the physical scene is admitted only through developer-defined geometric apertures, while all other pixels are rendered virtually. The scene initialises as a black field and uses surface-projected, overlay-style compositing so that the camera stream is visible only on circular or square meshes registered as projection surfaces. Tracking origin is configured to minimise unintended recentring, and the same method can operate either as a minimal black scene or within an optional three-dimensional environment. Main features of the framework ar

Multispectral infrared-to-full-color upconversion expanding human vision.

The human visual system is inherently blind to infrared radiation due to the insufficient energy of infrared photons to trigger the photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore, resulting in the loss of over half of the solar spectrum. Here, we report a colloidal quantum dot (CQD)-based infrared-to-visible upconverter that enables ultrasensitive upconversion of multispectral infrared light radiation as full-color visible vision. The photon-energy-selective excitonic transitions in quantum-confined states and the photon flux, respectively, enable infrared wavelength- and intensity-dependent nu

The biomechanics of the human tongue.

The human tongue is composed mainly of skeletal muscle tissue and has a complex architecture. Its anatomy is characterised by interweaving yet distinct muscle groups. It is a significant contributor to the phenomenon of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. A realistic model of the tongue and computational simulations are important in areas such as linguistics and speech therapy. The aim of this work is to report on the construction of a geometric and constitutive model of the human tongue and to demonstrate its use in computational simulations for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome research. Computer based modeling of the congenital long-QT 2 syndrome in the Visible Man torso: from genes to ECG.

The congenital long-QT syndrome is commonly associated with a high risk for polymorphic ventricular tachy-cardia and sudden cardiac death. This is probably due to an intensification of the intrinsic heterogeneities present in ventricular myocardium. Increasing the electrophysiological heterogeneities amplifies the dispersion of repolarization which directly affects the morphology of the T wave in the ECG. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of LQT2, a specific subtype of the long-QT syndrome (LQTS), on the Body Surface Potential Maps (BSPM) and the ECG. In this context a three-d
