Bioinspired Adhesives from Bio-Sourced Poly(amino acid)s Coacervates: Green and Tough.

Green adhesives are gradually replacing traditional synthetic adhesives due to their eco-friendly properties and sustainability. However, the industrial applications of green adhesives are limited by their lower strength and higher cost. Here, inspired by sandcastle worms, we show green adhesives with combined high adhesive strength and low cost by enhancing the interaction of γ-PGA/ε-PLL coacervates through the introduction of tannic acid. The preparation method is green, simple, and fast. Specifically, taking advantage of non-covalent interactions between three components, the synergistical

Tolerance of universal adhesives to saliva and gingival crevicular fluid contamination of dentin.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the dentin-bonding durability of universal adhesives under saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) contamination conditions. METHODS: Forty patients underwent paper-strip assessment of residual GCF wetting at subgingival margins under four GCF-management conditions. In vitro, dentin from 318 extracted sound human third molars was tested with three universal adhesives (SB/SP/AB) under no contamination, mild saliva, mild GCF, or severe GCF contamination. Artificial saliva or human serum (GCF surrogate; 20 μL) was applied; mild groups were blot-dried, whereas severe GC

Solvent-Free Dual-Curable Waterborne Polyurethane Adhesives Based on Vanillin and Acrylate Monomers.

To address the trade-off between storage stability and curing reactivity in NCO-terminated waterborne polyurethane (WPU) systems, a solvent-free WPU emulsion with dual-curing characteristics was developed using vanillin (VAN) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate/pentaerythritol triacrylate (HEA/PETA). Hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butyric acid (DMBA) were used as the isocyanate component and internal hydrophilic moiety, respectively, to prepare a self-dispersible polyurethane prepolymer. VAN was introduced as a latent isocyanate-related component, while HEA/PETA served as a

Core Buildup Composite Resins Bond Strength to Dentin and Microhardness Using Universal Adhesives.

The peer-reviewed literature on the use of universal adhesives (UAs) with core build-up composite resins (CBCRs) is limited. UAs may enhance the polymerization of dual-cured composite resins, leading to increased microhardness due to the "touch-cure" effect. This study compared the dentin bond strengths and microhardness of CBCRs bonded with UAs. A total of 480 bovine incisors were randomly allocated into 20 groups (n = 24). Two dual-cured CBCRs, ParaCore (PrCore) and Gradia Core (GrCore), one light-cured CBCR, Clearfil Photo Core (PhotoCore), and Filtek Z250 (Z250) were evaluated. For the dua

Beyond animal glue: Paleoproteomic analysis of paint binders and adhesives in ancient Egypt.

Despite the wealth of artworks from ancient Egypt in collections worldwide, the number of analytical studies on the organic media used in paints and adhesives is limited, especially because microsamples are often required. In this study, we used mass spectrometry-based proteomics to confidently identify the species and tissues of origin of proteinaceous materials in painted ancient Egyptian artifacts from several collections dating 1425 BCE to 400 CE. Proteomics confirmed the use of glue prepared from the collagen of multiple animals and revealed the presence of plant proteins, including sesam

A green oxidation route to prepare polysaccharides-based wood adhesives from sewage sludge.

Bio-adhesives are increasingly needed due to notorious formaldehyde emissions from conventional wood adhesives. Sewage sludge (SS) is rich in proteins and polysaccharides, which are potential feedstocks for bio-adhesives, while the lack of aldehyde groups impedes its efficacy as bio-adhesives. Herein, NaIO4 oxidation was proposed as a green route to enrich aldehyde groups on polysaccharides for the synthesis of bio-adhesives from SS. From in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, it confirmed that aldehyde groups were formed after oxidation treatment which is beneficial for the Schiff-b

Fatigue Properties and Degradation of Cured Epoxy Adhesives Under Water and Air Environments.

In this study, specimens cured with an epoxy adhesive were subjected to fatigue tests, which were conducted under air and water atmospheres at room temperature, because few studies have been conducted on the deformation behavior versus time (number of cycles) of the combined degradation due to moisture and cyclic stress. The epoxy adhesive was cured into plates and then cut into dumbbell-shaped specimens. Micro surface cracks were introduced into the specimen surfaces. The fatigue limit of smooth specimens without cracks in water improved compared to that in air. However, when a pre-crack was

Natural Antibacterial Compounds with Potential for Incorporation into Dental Adhesives: A Systematic Review.

Dental adhesives are essential in modern restorative dentistry and are constantly evolving. However, challenges like secondary caries from bacterial infiltration at the adhesive-tooth interface persist. While synthetic antibacterial agents in adhesives show promise, safety concerns have shifted interest toward natural options that are biocompatible, sustainable, and effective. Therefore, this study evaluated whether natural antibacterial compounds in dental adhesives can provide effective antimicrobial activity without compromising their integrity. This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 s

Adhesives for medical application - Peel strength testing and evaluation of biophysical skin response.

BACKGROUND: Medical adhesives are commonly used for securing wound dressings and medical devices used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Mechanical irritation of skin due to adhesive stripping and repeated application can lead to discomfort and device removal. This study aims to examine the peel strength and skin response to different medical adhesives in a cohort of healthy volunteers. METHOD: Twelve healthy participants were recruited for peel strength testing of three candidate adhesive tapes, and evaluation of the skin response after adhesive removal. A modified ASTM D903 peel streng

Effect of Cross-Linkers on Mussel- and Elastin-Inspired Adhesives on Physiological Substrates.

Surgical adhesives can be useful in wound closure because they reduce the risk of infection and pain associated with sutures and staples. However, there are no commercially available surgical adhesives for soft tissue wound closure. To be effective, soft tissue adhesives must be soft and flexible, strongly cohesive and adhesive, biocompatible, and effective in a moist environment. To address these criteria, we draw inspiration from the elasticity and resilience of elastin proteins and the adhesive of marine mussels. We used an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) for the backbone of our adhesive mat

Eco-friendly silk fibroin/tannic acid coacervates for humid and underwater wood adhesives.

Bioadhesives derived from biomass are steadily gaining spotlight as substitutes for formaldehyde-based resins in the adhesive industry. However, there is a need to develop novel water-resistant bioadhesives with high adhesive and cohesive strengths because the currently available biomaterial-based adhesives have low mechanical strength. In this study, a complex coacervate was prepared easily by mixing silk fibroin and tannic acid to produce a bioadhesive with high adhesive and cohesive strengths as well as water resistance. The silk fibroin-tannic acid coacervate adhered well to various substr

A pH-driven genipin gelator to engineer decellularized extracellular matrix-based tissue adhesives.

Decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) derived from natural ECM is receiving considerable interest as a promising component of tissue adhesives because of its high biocompatibility and tissue regenerative ability. However, the availability of dECM as a tissue adhesive is limited because of the lack of a gelator that can crosslink low concentrations of dECM to form hydrogels. Here, we report dECM-based tissue adhesives using a genipin gelator. Based on the pH-dependent reactivity of genipin, genipin-terminated 4 arm-poly(ethylene glycol) (GeniPEG) was synthesized. dECM-based hydrogels were

Improved wet shear strength in eco-friendly starch-cellulosic adhesives for woody composites.

Development of eco-friendly adhesives from renewable biomass has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Here, we present a novel approach via combination of waste newspaper (WNP) powder, oxidized glutinous rice starch, and polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) to prepare a formaldehyde-free starch-cellulosic adhesive (SCA) for woody composites. The oxidation treatment made the carboxyl/carbonyl groups more available in starch. Plywood bonded by the optimum SCA with 50 wt% of the WNP powder showed a wet shear strength of 0.83 MPa exceeding that of the oxidized starch adhesive by 130.5

Development of biodegradable hyper-branched tissue adhesives for the repair of meniscus tears.

UNLABELLED: Meniscus tears are one of the most commonly occurring injuries of the knee joint. Current meniscus repair techniques are challenging and do not bring fully satisfactory results. Tissue adhesives are a promising alternative, since they are easy to apply and cause minimal tissue trauma. In this study, a series of amphiphilic copolymers based on polyethylene glycol, trimethylene carbonate and citric acid were synthesized and subsequently end-functionalized with hexamethylene diisocyanate to form reactive adhesive materials. The shear adhesive strength of the networks to bovine meniscu
