Tick-borne diseases of domestic animals in northern Nigeria. II. Research summary, 1966 to 1976.

During the first 10 years of its existence, the Department of Parasitology and Entomology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, confirmed or described for the first time the occurrence of 25 different tick-borne parasites of domestic animals in the northern part of the country. Most of these organisms occur as inapparent infections but may serve as complicating factors in any adverse host condition. The transmission of Babesia bigemina by Boophilus decoloratus, Cowdria ruminantium by Amblyomma variegatum, and Borrelia anserina and Aegyptianella pullo

Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens and other parasites associated with an anemia outbreak in llamas (Lama glama).

The global expansion of South American camelid farming contrasts with the limited knowledge of the pathogens that can infect them. This study investigated the presence of multiple infectious agents, including Anaplasmataceae, Bartonella sp., hemotropic Mycoplasma, piroplasmids, trypanosomatids, and gastrointestinal parasites, in 10 surviving llamas sampled following an outbreak of clinical anemia. Ehrlichia sp. was molecularly detected in 1/10 animal, hemotropic Mycoplasma sp. in 4/10, and 7/10 were infected with apicomplexans, while parasitological stool analysis showed that 6/9 were infected

Wolbachia Infection in Two Species: Novel Views on the Colonization Ability of Wolbachia in Aphids.

Wolbachia pipientis (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) is an intracellular symbiont residing in arthropods and filarial nematodes. Sixteen supergroups have been described from different host taxa. Four supergroups A, B, M, and N were found in aphids according to prior studies. The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, are typical polyphagous species with global distributions. We conducted an extensive and systematic survey of Wolbachia infections in these aphids from China. High incidences of Wolbachia infection were detected. The total infection incidence was

Growth and Maintenance of Wolbachia in Insect Cell Lines.

The obligate intracellular microbe, Wolbachia pipientis (Rickettsiales; Anaplasmataceae), is a Gram-negative member of the alpha proteobacteria that infects arthropods and filarial worms. Although closely related to the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, which include pathogens of humans, Wolbachia is uniquely associated with invertebrate hosts in the clade Ecdysozoa. Originally described in Culex pipiens mosquitoes, Wolbachia is currently represented by 17 supergroups and is believed to occur in half of all insect species. In mosquitoes, Wolbachia acts as a gene drive agent, with the potential t

Assessing bat droppings and predatory bird pellets for vector-borne bacteria: molecular evidence of bat-associated Neorickettsia sp. in Europe.

In Europe, several species of bats, owls and kestrels exemplify highly urbanised, flying vertebrates, which may get close to humans or domestic animals. Bat droppings and bird pellets may have epidemiological, as well as diagnostic significance from the point of view of pathogens. In this work 221 bat faecal and 118 bird pellet samples were screened for a broad range of vector-borne bacteria using PCR-based methods. Rickettsia DNA was detected in 13 bat faecal DNA extracts, including the sequence of a rickettsial insect endosymbiont, a novel Rickettsia genotype and Rickettsia helvetica. Faecal

Detection of tick-borne pathogens in the pangolin tick, Amblyomma javanense, from Vietnam and Laos, including a novel species of Trypanosoma.

Two species of Southeast Asian pangolins (the Chinese pangolin, Manis pentadactyla and the Malayan or Sunda pangolin, Manis javanica) are critically endangered species. Therefore, knowledge on their parasitic infections is very important, especially considering ticks that can transmit which pathogens. In this study, 32 pangolin ticks (Amblyomma javanense), that were collected in Vietnam and Laos, were analyzed with molecular methods for the presence of tick-borne pathogens. Two members of the family Anaplasmataceae were shown to be present in 14 pangolin ticks, i.e., Candidatus Anaplasma pango

The Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) microbiome varies spatially and with Ascogregarine infection.

The mosquito microbiome alters the physiological traits of medically important mosquitoes, which can scale to impact how mosquito populations sustain disease transmission. The mosquito microbiome varies significantly within individual mosquitoes and among populations, however the ecological and environmental factors that contribute to this variation are poorly understood. To further understand the factors that influence variation and diversity of the mosquito microbiome, we conducted a survey of the bacterial microbiome in the medically important mosquito, Aedes albopictus, on the high Pacific

Zoonotic pathogens in an island invader: the case of the northern raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Mallorca (Balearic Islands).

Introduced to Europe in Germany in 1934, the northern raccoon (Procyon lotor) is an invasive carnivoran that has since spread widely across the continent and now thrives in Mediterranean ecosystems. This study investigated the occurrence of selected vector-borne, lung, and enteric pathogens, as well as associated tick species, in 75 raccoons necropsied on Mallorca Island (Spain), through molecular screening of spleen, lung, fecal, and ectoparasite samples. Tick infestation was recorded in 61.3% of raccoons, with all collected ticks (n = 326) identified as Rhipicephalus secundus, representing t

Evaluation of a modified next-generation sequencing assay to detect Borrelia, Anaplasma, and Babesia in blood and ear tissue samples from field-collected rodents.

Efforts to monitor the expanding geographic distribution of pathogens associated with Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae), and to evaluate the outcomes of environmental control interventions aiming to reduce the intensity of enzootic transmission of these pathogens, are dependent on sensitive and specific molecular assays for detection of pathogens in ticks and their rodent hosts. In this study, we modified a highly sensitive and specific multiplex PCR amplicon sequencing assay developed to identify pathogens in Ixodes ticks for use in screening blood or ear tissue from rodents (Peromyscus

MyD88-dependent signaling contributes to host defense against ehrlichial infection.

The ehrlichiae are small gram-negative obligate intracellular bacteria in the family Anaplasmataceae. Ehrlichial infection in an accidental host may result in fatal diseases such as human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis, an emerging, tick-borne disease. Although the role of adaptive immune responses in the protection against ehrlichiosis has been well studied, the mechanism by which the innate immune system is activated is not fully understood. Using Ehrlichia muris as a model organism, we show here that MyD88-dependent signaling pathways play a pivotal role in the host defense against ehrlichial

A Novel Neorickettsial Infection in 3 Dogs in the Pacific Northwest.

The genus Neorickettsia includes obligate, intracellular bacteria responsible for diseases including Potomac horse fever caused by Neorickettsia risticii and salmon poisoning disease (SPD) caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The Stellanchasmus falcatus (SF) agent is a member of this genus previously associated only with mild clinical signs in dogs. Between 2013 and 2016, 3 dogs in Washington State (USA) presented with disease suggestive of SPD, but N. helminthoeca was not detected by molecular techniques. Clinical signs included depression, anorexia, and diarrhea. Cytologic examination of as

Western immunoblot analysis of Haemobartonella muris and comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences of H. muris, H. felis, and Eperythrozoon suis.

Infectious agents were isolated from the spleens of three wild mice (Apodemus argenteus) by intraperitoneal inoculation of the spleen homogenate into laboratory mice. The laboratory mice developed clinical signs and splenomegaly, and three isolates were maintained by passage in mice. Tetracyclines were effective in preventing infection of mice with these agents, but streptomycin and penicillin were ineffective. The agents did not grow in bacterial growth media or chicken embryos. In smears of blood from infected mice stained by the Giemsa or the indirect immunofluorescence method, numerous org

Equine neorickettsiosis: A global perspective of the natural habitat of the bacteria and clinical disease.

Equine neorickettsiosis (EN) is an infectious, non-contagious systemic disease of horses caused by the closely related obligatory intracellular bacterial species Neorickettsia risticii and N. findlayensis. Clinical cases are considered endemic in multiple regions across the United States and Canada, as well as in parts of South America, including Uruguay and Brazil. Neorickettsia spp. are obligate endosymbionts of digenean trematodes, which have complex life cycles involving a molluscan first intermediate host, a wide range of invertebrate or vertebrate second intermediate hosts, and a vertebr

Molecular Typing of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Ixodids of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ticks are key vectors of zoonotic pathogens, and their expanding distribution in Europe heightens public health concerns. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, while tick distribution is well documented, molecular data on tick-borne pathogens remain limited. This study aimed to illustrate the presence and diversity of these pathogens, focusing on areas with high human activity. Ticks (n = 556) were collected in April 2022 from eight diverse locations, including urban parks, private properties, and rural sites. PCR-based screening was employed to detect Anaplasmataceae, Borrelia, Francisella, Piroplasmida
