Economic Losses from Premature Under-Five Mortality due to Diarrhoeal Diseases in South Asia: Trends, Aetiologies, and Key Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoeal diseases remain a major cause of under-five mortality in South Asia despite global health progress. This study quantifies the economic losses due to premature under-five deaths from diarrhoeal diseases, analyzing trends, aetiologies, and risk factors across five South Asian countries between 2010 and 2023. METHODS: Using data from the datasets published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and World Bank indicators, the study applied the human capital approach to estimate the present value of lost future labour income associated with diarrhoeal deat

A Narrative Review of Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Hospice and Palliative Care in South Asian Muslim Communities.

As hospice and palliative care (HPC) expands, it faces the challenge of serving patients from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Understanding these communities' unique values during critical life transitions is essential. This article presents two case narratives illustrating reservations toward HPC in South Asian Muslim (SAM) communities, highlighting challenges and proposing strategies for culturally sensitive care. The first case demonstrates that, even with evidence-based and empathetic approaches, hesitancy toward HPC may persist. This underscores the need for (1) community-leve

Sexual dysfunction in patients with Type 2 diabetes: A South Asian perspective.

Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a prevalent but frequently overlooked complication of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, with a particularly high burden in South Asia, a region experiencing a rapid rise in diabetes prevalence. Despite its significant effects on quality of life, interpersonal relationships, and psychological well-being, SD is often insufficiently addressed in routine clinical care. This gap is largely influenced by sociocultural barriers, limited openness in patient-physician communication, and inadequate access to specialized services. In men, erectile dysfunction (ED) represents the most c

Human Passage of Schistosoma incognitum, Tamil Nadu, India, and Review of Autochthonous Schistosomiasis, South Asia.

A fecal survey in Tamil Nadu, India, revealed 2 persons passed schistosome eggs, later identified as Schistosoma incognitum, a parasite of pigs, dogs, and rats. We investigated those cases and reviewed autochthonous schistosomiasis cases from India and Nepal. Whether the 2 new cases represent true infection or spurious passage is undetermined.

Global distribution of functionally important CYP2C9 alleles and their inferred metabolic consequences.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variability in the cytochrome P450 CYP2C9 constitutes an important predictor for efficacy and safety of various commonly prescribed drugs, including coumarin anticoagulants, phenytoin and multiple non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). A global map of CYP2C9 variability and its inferred functional consequences has been lacking. RESULTS: Frequencies of eight functionally relevant CYP2C9 alleles (*2, *3, *5, *6, *8, *11, *13 and *14) were analyzed. In total, 108 original articles were identified that included genotype data from a total of 81,662 unrelated individual

Symptomatic and asymptomatic enteric protozoan parasitic infection and their association with subsequent growth parameters in under five children in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium are common intestinal protozoan parasites that contribute to a high burden of childhood morbidity and mortality. Our study quantified the association between intestinal protozoan parasites and child anthropometric outcomes among children under-5. METHODS: We analyzed data from 7,800 children enrolled in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) across seven study sites that were positive for intestinal protozoan parasites between December 2007 and March 2011. Parasites were assessed using stool immunoassays (ELISA). We applied

Risk factors associated with overweight and obesity in people with severe mental illness in South Asia: cross-sectional study in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

Obesity is one of the major contributors to the excess mortality seen in people with severe mental illness (SMI) and in low- and middle-income countries people with SMI may be at an even greater risk. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity and overweight in people with SMI and investigate the association of obesity and overweight with sociodemographic variables, other physical comorbidities, and health-risk behaviours. This was a multi-country cross-sectional survey study where data were collected from 3989 adults with SMI from three specialist mental health institution

Genomic history of the seventh pandemic of cholera in Africa.

The seventh cholera pandemic has heavily affected Africa, although the origin and continental spread of the disease remain undefined. We used genomic data from 1070 Vibrio cholerae O1 isolates, across 45 African countries and over a 49-year period, to show that past epidemics were attributable to a single expanded lineage. This lineage was introduced at least 11 times since 1970, into two main regions, West Africa and East/Southern Africa, causing epidemics that lasted up to 28 years. The last five introductions into Africa, all from Asia, involved multidrug-resistant sublineages that replaced

[The current situation with strongyloidiasis in the USSR].

The literary data available and our own observations served the basis for characterization on strongyloidiasis distribution areas in the USSR. They embrace the Caucasus, Middle Asia, the European part of the country up to latitude 55-56 degrees north in the Maritime Territory and the southern part of the Khabarovsk Territory. Intensive invasion foci in specialized hostel-type institutions, invasion importation from the tropics to moderate climatic zones and their role in the epidemic process are discussed.

Rhinosporidiosis of parotid duct.

Rhinosporidiosis is a benign chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Rhinosporidiosis is endemic in south Asia, notably in southern India and Sri Lanka. Majority of the cases have been reported to occur in upper respiratory sites, notably anterior nares, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, larynx and soft palate. Only two rare cases of involvement of parotid duct, have been reported in literature. Hence, this case will probably be the third to be reported.

Whole genome sequence analysis and characterization of virulent Newcastle disease virus isolates from chicken and pheasants during 2020/21 outbreaks in Nepal.

Newcastle Disease (ND) remains a major threat to poultry production worldwide, particularly in regions where it is endemic, like Southern Asia. The disease is caused by virulent forms of avian paramyxovirus-1, commonly termed Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), a highly contagious virus with significant genetic diversity and evolving pathogenicity. This study aimed to molecularly characterize NDV isolates obtained from chickens and pheasants during the 2020/21 ND outbreaks in Nepal, to understand their genetic makeup, phylogenetic relationships, and implications for control strategies. Genetic Admixture in the Culturally Unique Peranakan Chinese Population in Southeast Asia.

The Peranakan Chinese are culturally unique descendants of immigrants from China who settled in the Malay Archipelago ∼300-500 years ago. Today, among large communities in Southeast Asia, the Peranakans have preserved Chinese traditions with strong influence from the local indigenous Malays. Yet, whether or to what extent genetic admixture co-occurred with the cultural mixture has been a topic of ongoing debate. We performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on 177 Singapore (SG) Peranakans and analyzed the data jointly with WGS data of Asian and European populations. We estimated that Peranakan C

Molecular identification and genetic diversity of Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae in freshwater fishes in southern Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Gnathostomiasis, an emerging food-borne parasitic zoonosis in Asia, is mainly caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae). Consumption of raw meat or freshwater fishes in endemic areas is the major risk factor. Throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar, freshwater fish are often consumed raw or undercooked. The risk of this practice for gnathostomiasis infection in Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar has never been evaluated. Here, we identified larvae of Gnathostoma species contaminating freshwater fishes sold at local markets in these three co

Prevalence of Curable Sexually Transmitted Infections in Pregnant Women in Low- and Middle-Income Countries From 2010 to 2015: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Current literature comparing the prevalence rates of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in pregnant women in various global regions is limited. As a result, antenatal screening practices for curable STIs in pregnant women, specifically Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) vary around the world, differing by country and particular STI. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of publications on STI prevalence among pregnant women in 30 different low- and middle-income countries. We searche

Emerging Bartonella in humans and animals in Asia and Australia.

Bartonella species, belonging to the alpha 2 subgroup of Proteobacteria, have either been considered or established as potential human and mammal pathogens. Five novel species of Bartonella have been reported in Thailand and Australia. Recently, three strains of B. tamiae were isolated from febrile illness patients in Thailand, while B. australis was isolated from kangaroos, and B. coopersplainsensis, B. queenslandensis, and B. rattiaustraliensis were isolated from rats in Australia. The 17 novel Bartonella strains isolated from rodents in southern China that were identified using the partial

A giant tyrannosaur from the Campanian-Maastrichtian of southern North America and the evolution of tyrannosaurid gigantism.

Tyrannosaurid dinosaurs dominated as predators in the Late Cretaceous of Laurasia, culminating in the evolution of the giant Tyrannosaurus rex, both the last and largest tyrannosaurid. Where and when Tyrannosaurini (T. rex and kin) originated remains unclear. Competing hypotheses place tyrannosaurin origins in Asia, or western North America (Laramidia). We report a new tyrannosaurin, Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis, from the Campanian-Maastrichtian Hall Lake Formation of New Mexico, based on a fossil previously referred to T. rex. T. mcraeensis predates T. rex by ~ 6-7 million years, yet rivaled it i
