In the study of addiction, attentional bias refers to the observation that substance-related cues tend to capture the attention of experienced substance users. Attentional bias is a cognitive intermediate in the conditioned association between drug-related cues, craving, and relapse. Numerous studies have documented the existence of attentional bias for cues associated with substances. By contrast, few studies have investigated attentional bias in individuals with pathological gambling (PG) or problematic gambling. In this study, we sought to assess attentional bias at the level of maintenance

OBJECTIVE: The previous studies reporting consistent visual reaction times slowing in patients with migraine prompted us to verify if headache could be associated to a broader impairment of attention. This study aims to undertake a thorough investigation of attentional performance by extending the evaluation to children with primary headache of different types.
METHODS: We compared 62 children with headache (14 migraineurs with aura, 29 without aura and 19 with tension type headache) and 52 controls without headache, matched for age, sex, and intelligence using Conners' Continuous Performance

There has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of syphilis over the last five years in the world. Some of the syphilitic patients have ocular uveitis as the initial presentation of syphilis, which may be misdiagnosed and can lead to a delay of treatment. Multiple manifestations of ocular syphilis include interstitial keratitis; anterior, intermediate, posterior uveitis and optic neuropathies. Uveitis, which may involve unilateral or bilateral eyes, is the most common ocular manifestation of syphilis. The serologic tests for syphilis should be considered for unexplained uveitis patients. A

Up until recently, it had been assumed that attentional biases for negative information do not exist in depression. However studies using post-conscious exposure durations have produced contradictory results. The limitations of common attentional tasks, suitability of stimulus materials and differences in stimulus duration times may have contributed to these inconsistencies. We aimed to address many of these issues and examine attentional responses in major depression at two post-conscious exposure times. We also investigated possible roles for rumination and distraction in increasing and less

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although attention problems are presumably responsible for a wide variety of difficulties patients with narcolepsy experience in everyday life, empirical investigation of this issue is scarce. Therefore, we conducted a systematic investigation of different aspects of attention and verbal memory in patients with narcolepsy.
DESIGN: Control-group design with comparison of performance in four attention tests--measuring phasic alertness, focused attention, divided attention, and flexible attention--and one verbal memory test.
PARTICIPANTS: 19 patients with narcolepsy (NG) and 2

In the motion aftereffect (MAE), a stationary pattern appears to move in the opposite direction to previously viewed motion. Here we report an MAE that is observed for a putatively high level of visual analysis-attentive tracking. These high-level MAEs, visible on dynamic (but not static) tests, suggest that attentive tracking does not simply enhance low-level motion signals but, rather, acts at a subsequent stage. MAEs from tracking (1) can overrule competing MAEs from adaptation to low-level motion, (2) can be established opposite to low-level MAEs seen on static tests at the same location,

Stimulus properties such as similarity-dissimilarity and novelty-familiarity are inherently relational and are embedded in ubiquitous stimulus contexts. Children with mental retardation and young children without mental retardation are particularly prone to failure on relational tasks such as oddity and match-to-sample (Greenfield, 1985; Soraci et al., in press). Converging evidence from a number of studies suggest that a critical factor in the performance discrepancies between these and other children is a differential sensitivity to relational information. In these studies relational charact

Two patients with acquired dysgraphia were reported. The patients' performance in various written and oral spelling tasks converge in support of the hypothesis that they have selective damage, within the spelling system, to the Graphemic Buffer. Although the patients present with comparable patterns of error types, they differ in the distribution of errors as a function of letter position in words. The patients' patterns of errors are compared to previously reported patterns of spelling errors in dysgraphic patients and are discussed in terms of hypothesized mechanisms that operate on the repr

Extinction is not just a passive decay of behavior but an active process of reorganization. This study explored this reorganization by examining the extinction burst and its connection to changes in attentional stimulus control in human participants. In Experiment 1 (N = 64), participants responded on either a Fixed-Ratio 1 (FR1) or Fixed-Ratio 5 (FR5) schedule, followed by extinction. Both schedules triggered a significant extinction burst in the first seconds of extinction, with the burst being larger under FR5. In Experiment 2 (N = 32), response rates and eye-tracking data (gaze fixation di

It is widely assumed that attention for peripheral visual information is reduced, especially when such information competes with information closer to the fovea. However, existing evidence for such a peripheral attention deficit has suffered from several confounds. Here we reinvestigated how stimuli presented at different eccentricities compete for attention. Human observers saw two equally relevant orientations (Experiment 1) or colors (Experiment 2), presented at close and far eccentricities. The two patterns were presented sequentially (thus competing little for attention), or simultaneousl

Attention is fundamental to all cognition. In the primate brain, it is implemented by a large-scale network that consists of areas spanning across all major lobes, also including subcortical regions. Classical attention accounts assume that control over the selection process in this network is exerted by 'top-down' mechanisms in the fronto-parietal cortex that influence sensory representations via feedback signals. More recent studies have expanded this view of attentional control. In this review, we will start from a traditional top-down account of attention control, and then discuss more rec

Joint attention behaviors involve sharing attention with others to an object or event by means of eye-gazing or pointing, which form the common basis for communication. There are two types of these behaviors: responding to joint attention (RJA) and initiating joint attention (IJA). RJA is the ability to follow the gaze of others, suggesting reception of a social signal from others; IJA is the ability to voluntarily direct the attention of others, to share the experience of an object or event, suggesting transmission of a social signal to others. Infants experience these roles (as signal receiv

Although several recent studies investigated the hemispheric contributions to the attentional networks using the Attention Network Test (ANT), the role of the cerebral hemispheres in modulating the interaction among them remains unclear. In this study, two lateralized versions of this test (LANT) were used to investigate theal effects on the attentional networks under different conflict conditions. One version, the LANTI-A, presented arrows as target and flankers, while the other version, the LANTI-F, had fruits as target and flankers. Data collected from forty-seven participants confirmed wel

BACKGROUND: Many adults who stutter presenting for speech treatment experience social anxiety disorder. The presence of mental health disorders in adults who stutter has been implicated in a failure to maintain speech treatment benefits. Contemporary theories of social anxiety disorder propose that the condition is maintained by negative cognitions and information processing biases. Consistent with cognitive theories, the probe detection task has shown that social anxiety is associated with an attentional bias to avoid social information. This information processing bias is suggested to be inv

Attention orients to an object that abruptly onsets, because the object's appearance alters the visual scene. In this report, the question was whether there would, similarly, be attentional prioritization of an existing object that changes its dynamic status. Attention may be deployed immediately to the object because its new dynamic status, potentially, also could alter the visual environment. This report focused on the capture capacity of an object--made up of four spots--that abruptly began rotating, thereby endowing it with two dynamic features: motion-onset, apparent when the object trans

Attentional disruption has been demonstrated using laboratory-induced pain, but has not been reliably established in everyday pain conditions. This study is the first to examine the effect of everyday acute headache on attention. Seventy-five frequent headache sufferers completed a flanker task, n-back task, attentional switching task, and dual task. Participants completed this battery of tasks twice: once when experiencing an episode of tension-type headache, and once when pain free. Headache impaired performance on the n-back task, retarded general responding on the flanker task, and produce

Rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about negative information, has been found to lead to serious maladaptive consequences, including longer and more severe episodes of major depression. In this review, we present and discuss research findings motivated by the formulation that individual differences in cognitive processes that control how information is processed influence the likelihood that thoughts will become repetitive and negative. Several studies have demonstrated that a tendency to ruminate (i.e., trait rumination) is related to difficulties updating working memory (WM) and dise

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) is a disabling sleep disorder characterized by early loss of hypocretin neurons that project to areas involved in the attention network. We characterized the executive control of attention in drug-free patients with NC to determine whether the executive deficits observed in patients with NC are specific to the disease itself or whether they reflect performance changes due to the severity of excessive daytime sleepiness.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty-two patients with NC compared to 22 patients with narcolepsy without cataplexy (NwC) matched for age, gender, in
